No major changes planned this evening with the forecast still
mostly on track with the approaching winter storm.

Dewpoints have remained a tad higher by a degree or two the past
couple hours, especially along and south of I-80. This has led to
some minor hazy visibility reductions to around 4-5 miles.
Otherwise all is quiet at this hour and accordingly have slowed
the arrival of snow up toward Rockford by a couple hours. Snow or
perhaps even some very light freezing drizzle may begin to move
into the far northwestern parts of our forecast area (northwestern
corners of Ogle and Winnebago counties) after midnight tonight.
Elsewhere, other than some light flurries, not expecting snowfall
accumulations until the arrival of the strong cold front Thursday
morning through early afternoon. Expect quickly deteriorating
conditions with the frontal passage.

Key messages remain the same with this system:

* Focus is not on the snowfall amounts, rather the combination of
  snow with strong winds and very cold temperatures.

* Getting stranded would be incredibly dangerous given the very
  cold temperatures and wind chills expected, especially Thursday
  night into Friday. Avoid non-essential travel if possible.

Through Friday...

Very dangerous winter weather expected across the area Thursday
afternoon through Friday night. The main points are:

* Rapidly deteriorating travel conditions from west to east across
  the area Thursday morning and afternoon with a round of
  accumulating snow and rapidly falling temperatures behind an
  arctic cold front. Deteriorating afternoon travel conditions
  likely to also be exacerbated by a flash freeze from the
  Chicago metro southeastward.

* Strong gusty west-northwesterly winds (gusting as high as 50
  mph) late Thursday night through Friday, resulting in possible
  power outages, substantial blowing and drifting snow with near
  white out conditions at times (most notably in open areas), and
  with potentially life threatening wind chills as low as 35 below
  zero.

* True prolonged blizzard conditions most favored across northern
  Porter county IN due to the combination of blowing snow and
  continued falling lake enhanced snow Thursday night through
  Friday night (Blizzard warning in effect here).

The expected dangerous winter weather prompted us to transition
the winter storm watch to a winter storm warning with the morning
update. The only exception to this was Porter county IN, where a
blizzard warning was issued. The timing for these warnings
remains unchanged for the afternoon update.

All attention this afternoon is focused on the impressive 150+ kt
upper jet sampled in this mornings RAOBs across western Canada
into the Pacific Northwest. This jet will continue to carve out a
large arctic trough across the central and eastern CONUS Thursday
and Friday, and will ultimately be the driver for our expected
significant winter storm. The arctic airmass associated with this
digging arctic origin trough is already spilling into across the
Dakotas as of this writing. In fact, current observations across
eastern Montana and western North Dakota are reporting actual air
temperatures in the teens to low 20s below zero, amidst westerly
winds of 20 to 30 mph. Actual wind chills with this are a
staggering 50 below zero! This is an airmass that means business
and is headed our way.

Not much has changed with the forecast thinking for our afternoon
forecast update. Overall, we will see this arctic front begin to
shift into northwestern sections of IL shortly after 8am tomorrow
morning, before it sweeps eastward across northern IL through the
mid to late morning hours (likely into the Chicago metro after
11am or 12pm), then over northwestern IN early to mid afternoon
(12 to 3 pm). Temperatures in the wake of the front will plummet
quickly from the upper 20s and low 30s down into the single digits
by mid to late afternoon. Travel conditions will deteriorate
quickly with this frontal passage as a potential flash freeze
sets up across parts of eastern IL into northwestern IN. Any flash
freeze will only be exacerbated by a period of accumulating
snowfall, which is expected to develop in the wake of the front
and persist into the late afternoon and evening. Snow rates looks
to peak around a half inch per hour for about a 2 to 3 hour
period directly following the frontal passage, before rates abate
and become light into the early evening. Snowfall accumulations
with this period of snow should be generally in the 2 to 4 inch
range. This is expected to comprise much of the total
accumulating snowfall from this system, with the exception of
areas near the lake, particularly in parts of Porter County IN
that will continue to have accumulating lake enhanced snowfall
through Friday night.

While snow amounts for most areas will not be overly significant,
the option to go with a winter storm warning was driven to act as
an all encompassing winter warning to cover the life threatening
wind chills to -35, the light to moderate snow accumulation and
the extensive blowing and drifting snow. The blowing and drifting
snow may result in occasional periods of white out conditions
(near blizzard conditions) across the winter storm warning area
during the day Friday as winds potentially gust as high as 50 mph.
While this is the case, it still appears the highest threat area
for the more true prolonged blizzard conditions will occur across
northern parts of Porter county IN. This is the area that will
continue to experience periods of lake enhanced moderate to heavy
snowfall through Friday night concurrently with the period of
strongest winds. It is for this reason we included Porter county
in a blizzard warning.

The winter weather warnings onset from west to east across the
area with frontal passage and begin mid to late morning through
the mid afternoon hours, and will persist through around daybreak
Saturday morning. Expect the worst conditions (considerable
blowing and drifting snow and life threatening wind chills to 35
below) to occur Friday and Friday night, with gradually improving
(but still dangerous) conditions on Saturday. Consider altering
travel plans to avoid this dangerous period of winter weather.

.LONG TERM...

Saturday through Thursday...

Forecast concerns include very cold conditions this weekend and
then a possible clipper with light snow Sunday night/Monday
morning.

High temps on Saturday will likely struggle to reach the upper
single digits and combined with winds still gusting into the 35
mph range, wind chills will likely be in the 20 to 25 below range
during the morning, possibly warming into the 15 below range
during the afternoon. Winds will slowly diminish Saturday night,
but likely still be in the 10-15 mph range by daybreak Christmas
morning, when temps will be in the zero to 5 below range. This may
push wind chills back into advisory level, 20 to 25 below,
especially across the western cwa. High temps on Sunday may reach
the lower teens, but much of the day will be in the single digits.
Winds will likely keep wind chills in the 5 to 10 below range as
well. While lows Sunday night will still be near zero, perhaps
low single digits above zero, winds should be fairly light,
limiting wind chill values.

The models continue to show a clipper system moving southeast
toward the area late Sunday night into Monday morning and while
this has been a feature on several runs for several days, there
remains some uncertainty for its track and its strength, as it
could be weakening as it arrives. However, if snow does
materialize, it will be quite dry/fluffy with an inch or two
possible. Confidence is still too low to make any changes and
blended pops remain low chance.

Temps begin to moderate Tuesday into Wednesday with highs possibly
back into the 40s by the end of next week with the next system in
the Thursday/Friday time period possibly all rain. cms

.AVIATION...
For the 06Z TAFs...

Aviation Forecast Concerns:

* Patchy light snow develops for KRFD around midnight.

* More widespread light/moderate snow develops Thursday morning
  just ahead of a sharp arctic cold front, and persists behind the
  front Thursday afternoon/evening. IFR/LIFR conditions likely at
  times with accumulating snow/blowing snow.

* Modest southeast winds turn south/southwest early Thursday, then
  veer sharply west-northwest and become strong and gusty behind
  the arctic cold front (around 16Z KRFD and 19Z Chicago).

* Snow, blowing snow and a very sharp temperature drop can be
  expected behind the front with conditions persisting through
  evening. Falling snow eases by early evening, but winds will
  frequently gust to/above 30 kts behind the front, and may
  approach 40 kts later Thursday night.

Sharp frontal boundary stretches from developing low pressure over
northeastern NM late this evening, northeast across IA and into
southern/eastern WI. The eastern portion of the front has been
lifting slowly north as a warm front during the evening, in
response to a weak surface wave tracking along the front. Areas of
light snow were occurring across parts of IA/MN/western WI, and
this will likely develop into northwest IL and the KRFD area after
midnight. Brief IFR visibilities are possible at KRFD, which will
be on the eastern periphery of the more organized light snow
through the pre-dawn hours.

A much stronger upper disturbance will strengthen across the
region Thursday, eventually resulting in deep low pressure
strengthening east of the forecast area by early Thursday
evening. As this occurs, the front currently to the northwest of
the terminals will move across the area as a very sharp arctic
cold front Thursday morning/early afternoon. A period of moderate
snow is expected to develop as the front approaches, and persist
behind the front during the afternoon and evening. LIFR
visibilities are possible with falling and blowing snow behind the
front through the afternoon.

The cold front will also produce a sharp shift to strong/gusty
northwest winds and plummeting temperatures, along with IFR/LIFR
conditions in snow and blowing snow. Strengthening of winds may
lag the frontal passage by a couple of hours, though sustained
winds are expected to increase to around 20 kts with gusts
around 30 kt by evening, further increasing during the evening and
overnight hours with gusts approaching 40 kts. Snow intensity
should diminish during the evening, though the strong gusty winds
will continue to cause blowing snow which may continue to produce
low visibilities and produce drifting.

* Storm Warning Will Be in Effect from 3 AM to 10 PM CST on Friday

A powerful Arctic front will sweep across the lake this
afternoon, with a brief surge of northwesterly gales with the
front and then prevailing west-northwest gales developing this
evening. As an extremely cold air mass pours across the lake and a
rapidly intensifying low pressure center tracks through eastern
lower Michigan and over Lake Huron/Georgian Bay tonight into
Friday, gales will increase to 45 kt and then speeds/gusts will
further increase to storm force from the west early Friday.
Confidence is highest for the Indiana nearshore zones east of
Gary, but out closer to the open waters, think that the threat
for storm force is high enough to warrant the upgrade for the
rest of the nearshore. After storm force winds ease to gales
Friday evening/night, gales are expected to persist through
Saturday evening.

With high end gale to storm force winds and an extremely cold air
mass (temperatures around 0F) pouring across the lake, heavy
freezing spray accumulation on vessels will be likely. A Heavy
Freezing Spray Warning will go into effect at 3 PM CST this
afternoon with a current planned expiration time of 10 PM CST on
Saturday. The highest waves for this event, up to 14 feet
occasionally to 18 feet, are expected to be east of Gary, due to
the primarily westerly wind direction during the strongest winds.
