.Short Term...(This afternoon through Sunday)

Synopsis...Anticipated shortwave trough is moving southward across
the central Plains as it interacts with southern stream energy.
Further amplification of the wave pattern is expected to take place
in the Deep South as the jet streak rounds the base of the trough.
The resultant upper-level closed low will consolidate the attendant
surface cyclones into one robust circulation with significant low-
level response.

Highlights...Current regional radar and satellite imagery depict an
area of weak echoes and mid-level clouds advancing from the west as
a result of weak isentropic lifting and divergence ahead of the
trough. Surface observations in western Kentucky has shown light
rain overnight, but accumulations farther east should hold off until
sunrise as a dry layer centered around 700-mb will evaporate any
hydrometeors. However, forecast soundings indicate gradual moistening
and eventually saturation of the aforementioned layer which leads to
mentioning light precipitation south of the Parkways as Saturdays
kicks up. Looking at the 15\00Z CAM guidance suite, there is
consensus for any precipitation to fall in the southern tier of the
CWA where best lift will manifest. Thermal profile initially support
flurries and/or light snow, depending how moist it gets, with
gradual shift to a liquid p-type scenario Saturday afternoon
provided that it actually rains since probabilities will decrease
towards sunset as the upper low moves over the Lower Mississippi
Valley. As the surface cyclone deepens and starts moving northeast,
easterly winds will intensify to around 15 mph on Saturday evening.
Finally, a wintry mix p-type scenario can develop Sunday morning as
a warm nose undercuts the cold air with light accumulations along
the KY\TN borders.

...Wintry Weather Threat This Weekend...

By sunrise Sunday morning, a strong upper level low (ULL) should be
sitting near the AL/MS borders. Wrap-around precipitation should
begin to, if not already, impact portions of southern Kentucky from
this ULL. As it lifts off to the northeast during the day Sunday, we
should begin to see precipitation overspread portions of central and
eastern Kentucky. There is still a lot of uncertainty in the
forecast, and much of it stems from the following two factors...

1) Evolution/Track of the ULL and surface low: If the ULL digs
farther south/east, we may only see a glancing blow of some of the
wintry weather from this system. A more northern track allows for
widespread wintry weather in central Kentucky. Mid-level
frontogenesis within the deformation axis could also aid in moderate
to heavy snow bands forming (assuming atmospheric column is at/below
freezing) across our eastern CWA with +1"/hour rates.

2) Strength of the warm nose: Model soundings vary on the strength
of a 925-875mb warm nose across southern and central Kentucky during
the daylight hours Sunday. This will have big impacts on precip type
and could result in "boom"/"bust" potential for forecasted snow and
ice totals. Thankfully, even in some of the stronger warm nose
solutions, it appears the freezing rain threat will be limited.
Nearly all guidance agrees on precipitation ending as snow Sunday
night as colder air wraps around the system.

Given the uncertainties in the forecast and variability within the
models, this forecast generally follows the "mean" of solutions and
doesn't stray too far to any extreme model output. There is fairly
good confidence that impactful wintry weather will at the very least
target portions of southern and central/eastern Kentucky east of I-
65 Sunday into Sunday night, particularly where the winter storm
watches are in effect. For our latest thoughts on snow/ice totals

No changes have been made to the current headlines with this
forecast package mainly due to (1), low to medium confidence that
areas within the winter storm watch will meet warning criteria...
and (2), uncertainty in exactly how far west advisory criteria
and/or impacts will be observed.

Snow will begin lifting off to the northeast late Sunday night with
the ULL, but another quick diving shortwave will move into the
region Monday morning and could result in some light snow showers.
Given cold temperature profiles in place, snow-to-liquid ratios will
be on the higher side of climatology, so it won't take much QPF to
get some light accumulations. This will have to be watched closely
as models have it timed to arrive around rush hour Monday morning.

Snow shower activity looks taper off everywhere by Monday evening.
We'll see a brief dry period Tuesday as high pressure slips by to
the south, but another wave/frontal boundary looks to impact the
region on Wednesday. Rain looks to be most likely ahead of the
front, but as temperatures drop behind the front, it could
transition to snow. Colder temperatures look to finish out the week
Thursday and Friday as Canadian high pressure exerts its influence
over the region.

MVFR cigs across the region will continue through the afternoon, but
we'll see improvements to flight categories by 00z this evening as
the cloud deck shifts further south. VFR cats expected at
SDF/HNB/LEX for a few hours late tonight, but not as confident for
BWG, where they could see a few hours of low-end VFR. Ceilings begin
to drop back down to MVFR and fuel alternate (below 2000 ft) by 09z
tomorrow morning at BWG, and at LEX by 15z. Kept mention of wintry
mix precip at BWG for tomorrow, and introduced -SN for LEX towards
the end of the TAF period. Not confident enough at this time to
include mention of precip at SDF, though some light snow may still
be possible by late tomorrow morning.
