.SYNOPSIS...A colder Memorial Day weekend with rain and some snow
showers, mainly across the north. Breezy to windy conditions
expected as well. Moderating temps and drier weather beginning
Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM...This afternoon through Sunday night...

Longwave troughing will dominate the western US this holiday
weekend. For our region, expect cooler, wet, and gusty conditions.
Initial short wave pushing across eastern NV is bringing light
showers this afternoon. A stronger and colder upper level
low/trough is rapidly approaching the region from the northwest.
More showers will develop over northern Nevada later this
afternoon and will continue tonight into Sunday as the low/trough
push east. Activity should mostly remain north of US-50. The low
is expected to slow over Utah and bring wrap- around showers
through Sunday night. Isolated thunder possible through the
weekend with cooling aloft, especially this afternoon/evening as
we will see a little better daytime heating and instability as
some clearing occurs behind the initial wave. Expect breezy to
windy conditions through the weekend as gradient remains tight and
stronger winds push overhead. Looks like highest winds expected
on higher terrain, but some stronger gusts could mix down to the
surface with showers or storms. Not expecting winds like we saw on
Thursday, but still some blowing dust will be possible, mainly
for central NV which has been and will be drier. Snow levels begin
to drop tonight through Sunday to 5500-7000 ft, with snow for the
higher mountains of northern NV. Snow levels drop further Sunday
night on backside of the upper low and could see some snow falling
in the valleys and basin. Little to no snow accumulations for the
valleys, but northern mountains expected to see some
accumulations. Winter Wx Adv issued for Rubies and Northern Elko
mountains. Highs today in the low 60s to low 70s north, upper 60s
to upper 70s central. Lows tonight in the 30s to lower 40s. Much
colder tomorrow with highs in the 40s and 50s north, 50s and 60s
central. Cold tomorrow night with lows in the 20s to 30s.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday...

Longwave troughing over much of the U.S. puts our region in a
breezy northwesterly flow. Some moisture in northern Nevada could
support some snow showers with a mix of rain and snow in valleys.
A dusting on grassy surfaces would be the most likely result with
roadways remaining wet. As the day progresses, snow levels lift
and valleys see a transition to all rain. Highest QPF totals are
currently expected to be closer to the NV/ID border, but this has
fluctuated between ensembles and is likely to change as we go
through the weekend.

Moisture for these showers exists the region overnight Monday into
Tuesday morning, allowing for showers to taper off. Weak ridging
builds in and helps to bring temperatures up and support dry
weather. Afternoon highs have highest probabilities to at least
reach the 80s by Thursday with some probability to reach the low
90s in warmest locations. Winds trend lighter, and skies on the
sunnier side make the end of the week feel more seasonable.

Less confidence heading into the weekend, but right now the mean
outcome brings a shortwave back into the region and increases the
odds of some active weather. Details with respect to that are
fuzzy at this time.

.AVIATION...An on-and-off pattern of showers across northern and
northeastern Nevada continues into the evening and nighttime
hours. Lowers CIGs approach MVFR conditions at KWMC, KBAM, and
KEKO. Gusty west-northwesterly winds at all sites approach 25kts
to 35 kts through tonight, but VFR conditions return during the
early morning hours tomorrow.

.FIRE WEATHER...Cool temps with showers for Memorial Day weekend,
mainly north of US-50. The shower activity will be mostly rain
for the valleys with some snow in the mountains. Occasional
isolated thunderstorms are possible in northern FW Zones during
the afternoon and evening hours with these looking to be mostly wet
in nature. Winds will be gusty today and then even stronger for
Sunday. Winds will be westerly for today but will slowly switch to
the northwest through Sunday. RH will remain relatively high
through the weekend, although some afternoon RH values in the
teens south of US-50. A warming and drying trend will begin on
Tuesday.

Winter Weather Advisory from 1 AM Sunday to 11 AM PDT Monday for
Northern Elko County-Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range.

Wind Advisory from 7 AM to 9 PM PDT Sunday for Northwestern Nye
County.
