Issued at 409 AM CST Mon Dec 19 2022 The leading edge of a very cold and shallow arctic high pressure system has drifted into srn Nebraska this morning. The front is expected to be carried north into the Sandhills by developing sfc low pressure across ern WY. The sfc low pressure and arctic front will remain nearly stationary across swrn Nebraska until Wednesday. Key Messages: -The harshest winter weather since 1983 appears to be heading toward Nebraska. Dangerous wind chill readings of -30F to -50F, strong winds, snow and blowing snow are likely this week. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday) Issued at 409 AM CST Mon Dec 19 2022 The arctic front has set off areas of fog and temperatures are favorably cold for snow growth with flurries underway. A push of western winds at h850mb across wrn Nebraska today could lead to clearing skies. The airmass is so shallow and cold, clearing skies is uncertain, especially across parts of the Sandhills with several inches of snow on the ground. The temperature forecast leans on a blend of cooler deterministic models. The ARW suggested single digit highs above and below zero across nrn Nebraska. The forecast blend places highs in the low single digits across the north with teens to around 20 south. A similar strategy is in place tonight which suggested lows well below zero across the snow covered north. Although winds will be light less than 10 mph, wind chill readings breach the -20F so a Wind Chill Advisory is now in effect, generally along and north of highway 2. No reasonable temperature recovery is expected in this area Tuesday or Wednesday, so this advisory operates tonight through Wednesday afternoon. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday) Issued at 409 AM CST Mon Dec 19 2022 The NAM and SREF are coming in line with the GFS regarding snowfall Wednesday and Wednesday night. The ECM continues to focus the best snow chance across ncntl Nebraska. This FGEN forced area of snow pretty much runs through the heart of wrn and ncntl Nebraska and QPF near 0.25 inches is expected in many areas. A blend of the NAM, GFS, SREF and ECM suggested 4 to 6 inches of snow from the cntl Sandhills east through ncntl Nebraska, including Custer county. A Winter Storm Watch has been hoisted beginning Wednesday afternoon through noon Thursday. The models suggest Other areas of wrn and ncntl Nebraska will see around 2 inches of snow. The GEM, ECM and GFS have agreed on 30 mph winds Thursday, according to the 500m AGL winds around 30kts at 18z. The GFS shows h850mb winds around 45kts which supports the predicted gusts of 40 to 45 mph. These strong winds will begin to increase Wednesday afternoon across northwest Nebraska and spread south and east Wednesday night. The strong winds should continue throughout the day Thursday with a decrease in speeds Friday evening. The temperature forecast and wind forecast suggest wind chills around -55F across nrn Nebraska and readings around -40F across the south Thursday morning. Similar readings are in place for Friday morning with a modest recovery to -20F to -35F Saturday morning. The Wind Chill Watch has been extended through Saturday morning for this reason. It is worth noting the GFS is predicting 1066mb high pressure centered over wrn MT Thursday. If this were to verify, it would set a new record for highest SLP across the CONUS. The current record is 1064mb recorded at Miles City MT in December 1983. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning) Issued at 520 AM CST Mon Dec 19 2022 MVFR and local IFR conditions have begun to spread across much of western and north central Nebraska early this morning. Areas of fog are expected, especially across the Sandhills. Northwest winds will be generally light at 10kts or less through the TAF period. Extreme cold wind chills as low as as 29 degrees below zero are expected across portions of north central, west central, and northeastern Panhandle. With this, a Wind Chill Advisory is now in effect for those areas this evening through Wednesday evening. Areas elsewhere will see wind chill values in the teens to single digits this morning and tonight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday. Bitterly cold temperatures and gusty winds are expected to create extreme to life-threatening wind chills well below zero through the end of next week. The most brutal conditions will be Wednesday night through Thursday night when wind chill values of 35 to 50 degrees below zero are possible, especially north of Interstate 80. A Wind Chill Watch remains in effect for all of western and north central Nebraska due to the extreme cold wind chills. Accumulating snow and blowing snow are also possible Wednesday into Thursday. This may create hazardous travel conditions with areas of reduced visibility and slick roads. A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for portions of north central and west central Nebraska from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
