.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)
Issued at 436 AM CDT Mon Apr 11 2022

Dry and blustery with seasonal temperatures across central and western
Nebraska to start the workweek. A vigorous upper low entering the PacNW
will induce some broad ridging across the High Plains today. This will
bring a good amount of mid/high clouds to the region but keep any
precipitation at bay through today. Winds will be a bit blustery with
gusts of 25 to 30 mph at times so fire weather conditions will be
problematic. See the special fire weather section below for specifics.

By tonight, the spring storm system we have been monitoring for the
past several days will begin to develop as the upper trof/closed low
moves through the northern Rockies. As the surface low starts to
develop over eastern Colorado, the low level wind field ahead of the low
will become quite amplified and drive a warm front with a surge of warm
air into Nebraska from the south. Isentropic lift combined with large
scale ascent may generate some scattered showers Tuesday night
especially north of Interstate 80. Bufkit indicates the near surface
environment will be stable and not conducive to mixing the stronger
winds to the surface. However, if mixing is better than anticipated
Monday night may be quite blustery.

Tuesday looks to be a dynamic day with the center of low pressure
expected to move directly across southern Nebraska west to east.
Eastern locations will be well into the warm sector and see
temperatures soar ahead of the approaching low. Expect highs on Tuesday
to reach the lower 80s across south central and eastern Nebraska.
However, locations in the sandhills and panhandle up toward the Pine
Ridge will already be on the back side of the cold front and after an
early bump into the upper 50s/lower 60s temperatures will remain steady
before falling late in the day.

The warm sector will feature strong gusty winds and have an opportunity
to destabilize with some surface based CAPE pooling ahead of the
approaching cold front. While the best instability with potential for
deep convection will reside off to our east, there will be enough
instability to develop some storms ahead of the approaching cold front
mainly east of Route 83 Tuesday afternoon. The storms will be gaining
steam as they exit off to our east so will have to monitor the
convective environment carefully since they may pose a severe threat
for the far eastern portion of our area as per the SPC day 2 outlook
with a marginal risk edging into portions of Holt, Garfield, and
Wheeler counties. Also of concern will be the potential for lightning

By Tuesday evening central and western Nebraska will be on the back
side of the departing low and strong gusty winds will usher much colder
air into the region. Probabilistic guidance indicates the potential
for northwesterly gusts of 50 to 60 mph possible Tuesday night through
Wednesday afternoon as cold air advection keeps the boundary layer
mixed. By daybreak Wednesday temperatures will range from the middle
teens in the panhandle to the low/mid 20s east of Route 83, and highs
on Wednesday will be well below normal ranging from the lower 30s near
the Pine Ridge to the middle 40s east of Route 83 and south of
Interstate 80.

The trend in ensemble guidance from the past few days has continued and
QPF plumes are now clustered to much lower values. After whatever
showers precipitation we get along/ahead of the cold front on Tuesday,
median values for expected precipitation Tuesday night into Wednesday
will be only a few hundreths of an inch and end quickly during the day
on Wednesday. With the colder air moving in this may translate snowfall
of a trace to a coating up along the SD/NE border.

Thursday will remain blustery mainly up around the Niobrara valley but
overall winds will be diminishing through the end of the week with dry
conditions and a warming trend through Friday. Ensemble guidance is
starting to show signals for another chance for precipitation heading
into the weekend, though confidence in solutions is low as spread in
ensemble members is considerable.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)

VFR conditions expected to persist through tonight. A storm system
will approach the area tonight, with increasing low clouds over
portions of central and north central Nebraska tomorrow morning.
Widespread MVFR/locally IFR is expected tomorrow morning,
primarily for terminals east of an LBF to VTN line. These low
clouds will gradually exit the area into the afternoon. Winds
remain gusty from the south through tomorrow afternoon, with
gusts around 25 to 35kts anticipated.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 338 AM CDT Mon Apr 11 2022

Critical fire weather conditions are expected today and a Red Flag
Warning has been issued for all of western and north central
Nebraska for this afternoon and evening. Minimum humidity will be
between 12 and 20 percent and winds will be out of the south to
southwest with gusts up to 35 mph. Overnight humidity recovery will
be between 50 and 80 percent, with the lowest values in the
Panhandle and southwest Nebraska and higher values in north central
Nebraska.

On Tuesday, a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for areas
of southwest and north central Nebraska, including Zones 209, 210,
and 219. Humidity will be below 20 percent in these areas with winds
shifting from the southwest to the northwest, peak gusts between 45
and 50 mph. Other areas may have similar winds, but minimum humidity
will be between 20 and 30 percent. Stray lightning strikes from
passing thunderstorms have the potential to start fires during the
afternoon and evening.

Minimum humidity will be between 20 and 30 percent for most areas on
Wednesday with the exception of southwest Nebraska, where minimum
humidity may be in the mid to upper teens. Winds remain strong out
of the northwest with gusts up to 50 mph possible. Rain and snow is
possible in northern Nebraska during the day. Humidity falls into
the 15 to 25 percent range for most of the area on Thursday and
winds will remain gusty out of the northwest.

A powerful spring storm will affect the Great Plains Tuesday
through Thursday. The storm has the potential to produce snow in
northern Nebraska and high winds across western and north central
Nebraska. Any snow accumulations are expected to be light.
