Issued at 330 AM CST Sun Dec 11 2022 -Confidence continues to increase in a significant winter storm system impacting western and north central Nebraska in the Monday through Thursday timeframe. -Significant snow accumulations and strong winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow along with very dangerous travel conditions. -Blizzard conditions will be possible for areas of northwest Nebraska Monday night into Wednesday. -Widespread northwest wind gusts in excess of 45 mph area expected, with the potential for gusts exceeding 60mph at times for all of western and north central Nebraska. -Cold temperatures are expected after midweek, with the potential for wind chills well below zero. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday) Issued at 330 AM CST Sun Dec 11 2022 Quiet weather conditions persist today, with weak warm advection continuing amid broad southerly flow. H85 temps warm slightly through the day, though only to ~5-7C. Highs today climb into the 40s to low 50s, with the coldest temps expected where snow cover persists. Aloft, shortwave ridging slides through the Plains, with rising heights locally. By late tonight, a powerful upper low will begin to cross the Rockies, with increasing lee cyclogenesis by tomorrow afternoon. Flow aloft turns southwesterly in advance of the upper low center, leading to increasing moisture aloft. Additionally, low level flow strengthens from the southeast, with rapid northward moisture advection from the Gulf and quickly increasing cloud cover. Clouds look to persist through the day tomorrow, though this is offset somewhat by the strong warm advection. As a consequence, highs again range from the 40s to lower/mid-50s. Some patchy fog/drizzle will be possible tomorrow morning as well, with the rapid low level moisture surge. By the afternoon, rain showers begin to overspread areas east of HWY 61 in the broad warm air advection regime. QPFs look to remain generally light through the afternoon. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday) Issued at 330 AM CST Sun Dec 11 2022 Attention then turns to the significant winter storm system anticipated to impact the area through Thursday. The strong southerly flow continues into Monday night, with the surface low slowly beginning to eject eastward into the Plains. This will promote increasing instability into the overnight hours, with MUCAPE approaching 500-750 J/kg in a narrow corridor. As the surface low begins to push eastward a cold front enters the Panhandle. Ahead of this front, scattered to widespread embedded thunderstorm development is anticipated. Forecast soundings suggest marginal deep layer shear for a stronger storm or two and the steepening lapse rates aloft would support a small hail threat. Any thunderstorms should quickly move off to the northeast. With PWAT values approaching climatological maximums by Monday night, any thunderstorms should be efficient rainfall producers. Widespread QPFs of ~0.25-0.50" are expected along and east of HWY 83 with this initial activity. The surface low is expected to meander rather slowly through the area, as blocking upstream leads to a stagnant upper air pattern into midweek. This will prolong the impacts of winter weather conditions, and lead to a longer duration winter storm. A majority of western and north central Nebraska will likely see >24hrs of snowfall and high winds. The threat for winter weather ramps up quickly through the day Tuesday from west to east as the cold air advances. Guidance continues to suggest a brief period of mixed p-type in the frontal zone, before transitioning to all snow. A quick glaze of ice will be possible for areas east of HWY 61. For areas further west, forecast soundings continue to advertise an all snow p-type at onset. Conditions look to rapidly deteriorate after the changeover to snow, with winds quickly strengthening behind the cold front. Widespread northwest wind gusts of 40-50mph, and gusts approaching 60mph are expected across western Nebraska in precipitation. This looks to lead to extremely difficult travel conditions, along with the potential for blizzard conditions across northwest Nebraska. Forecast soundings suggest a deep, saturated DGZ colocated with deep ascent across much of the cold sector. SLRs initially start out lower (~8-10:1) but increase quickly into Tuesday evening (~12- 14:1). One caveat with expected SLRs is the potential for dendrite fracturing, as winds look very strong below the DGZ. This could lead to less efficient snow processes. However, a large swath of heavy snow is expected through Tuesday, especially along and west of a Grant to Springview line. Confidence is slowly increasing with respect to the southward extent of the heavy snowfall axis, and as a consequence have added Perkins county to the existing Winter Storm Watch. For areas further south and east, confidence wanes with the likelihood of a tight gradient in snowfall amounts. This is highly dependent on the surface low track. Guidance remains in rather good agreement with respect to upper level synoptic features, both with the track of the parent upper level low and upstream blocking ridge. Subtle differences remain in ensemble/deterministic guidance with respect to the track of the surface low. Convective development will likely play a big role in where exactly the surface low tracks, and this will be very difficult to pin down at this range. For areas near and east of an Imperial to North Platte to O'Neill line, trends will need to be monitored very closely. Subtle shifts in low track will lead to significant changes in expected snowfall and associated impacts. The potential exists for a much wider area of significant snowfall across southwest into central and north central Nebraska, and those with interests should monitor later forecasts closely. Cold temperatures are expected in the wake of the early week system, especially in areas that see significant snowfall. Well below zero wind chills can be expected at times each day across much of the area Tuesday into the weekend. Confidence wanes with respect to additional precipitation chances through the end of the week, though well below normal high temperatures are expected with broad northwesterly flow persisting aloft. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1131 AM CST Sun Dec 11 2022 Look for high clouds to increase into the evening hours at both the KLBF and KVTN terminals. Overnight, low clouds will stream into the area from the south and southeast. By 10z Monday, expect IFR to LIFR conditions at the KLBF terminal which will persist through 18z Monday. For the KVTN terminal, IFR and LIFR conditions will develop after 12z Monday morning. At both terminals, ceilings as low as 300 FT AGL are expected along with 1 Mile of visibility in fog.
