Not much change to the forecast grids as forecast has remained on
track from the morning update. Did touch up wind and wind gusts a
little bit and updated based on latest observations.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 550 AM EST WED FEB 16 2022

Conditions remain quiet across eastern Kentucky with only a few high
level clouds passing over the area. A pronounced ridge to valley
split of 15-20 degrees has developed under mostly clear conditions
and southerly winds that have not died down overnight. Paintsville
currently sits at 24 while some of the western mesonets are
reporting mid and upper 40s. The latest surface analysis depicts
several areas of low pressure lined up from the upper Mississippi
Valley back through the central Plains and the Dessert southwest.
The warm front that passed through the area Tuesday currently
resides through the upper Ohio Valley and into the upper Mississippi
Valley. Strong southerly flow will continue to increase with gusts
of 35-50 mph expected this afternoon. The latest upper level
analysis depicts troughing over central Canada through the western
CONUS and across portions of the Baja peninsula. A 543 dam low sits
over extreme southern California. Across the eastern Plains and
areas east, westerly and southwesterly upper level flow is keeping
conditions relatively subdued.

Today, mid and upper level clouds will be on the increase as the
system across the west approaches. The main story will be the
increase in winds as the pressure gradient tightens substantially.
Sustained winds of 10-20 knots from the south are expected with
gusts ranging from 35-42 knots. The higher wind gusts are expected
across the central, northeast, and southeast and have wanted a wind
advisory in effect from 9AM to 7PM today. The remainder of the area
has an SPS in effect for the same time frame. These strong winds
will also combine with moderately low RH values produce an elevated
risk for wildfires this afternoon. Highs will generally top out in
the mid 60s across the area while dewpoints will range form the mid
30s to low 40s, producing relative humidities between 30-40%.

Tonight will remain mild as loud cover continues to increase and
southerly flow continues. Lows will range from the mid 40s to low
50s across the area. PoPs will increase from west to east as the
cold front approaches the area. The western fringes of the CWA may
see light rain starting just before dawn. Precipitation will quickly
increase in areal coverage through the morning and into the
afternoon. There is a slight chance/chance for thunderstorms across
the area Thursday afternoon. A strong LLJ over the area will provide
plenty of LLWS and SRH, however, instability will be very marginal
with MUCAPE values staying below even 100J/kg. A few stronger storms
are possible with the main threat being strong damaging winds.
Total QPF across the area is expected to fall between 0.75 and 1.5
inches with the higher amounts across the west and the lower amount
in the east. Locally higher amounts and some flooding issues are
possible and as such, all of eastern Kentucky is under a day 2
marginal risk for excessive rainfall.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Tuesday)

The cold front of the aforementioned system in the short term
segment will be bearing down the region as the period starts,
bringing showers. Wind fields will be very strong into the
evening, including the lower levels. Should instability be
sufficient, we will also have thunderstorms which could tap into
environmental winds to cause damage. Can't even rule out strong to
damaging winds outside of deep convection. It will depend the
degree of low level mixing, which will be a function of surface
stability/instability, and this is still uncertain.

Significant precip will rapidly taper off with cold fropa during
the night. It still appears to happen before air cold enough for
snow arrives. However, forecast soundings show saturation at the
top of the lower level mixed/convective layer reaching
temperatures marginally cold enough for ice production late
overnight into Friday morning over the northern portion of the
forecast area, and a mention of flurries is included. Even the
lower levels dry out during the day Friday, as high pressure
ridging builds in from the west and brings clearing skies.

The ridge drops to our south Friday night, and an impulse in the
west northwest flow aloft supports another cold front to drop
south through the area on Saturday. It will be starved for
moisture and will have little noticeable impact. It will only
give us a glancing shot of a cold air mass, with the main effect
being a reinforcement of dry air. High pressure behind the front
will pass to our east Saturday night and warm air advection will
return on its back side and last through the end of the period.
Moisture of the gulf will eventually come into play in the warm
air advection, as a large storm system takes shape over the
middle of the CONUS. This will probably result in rain returning
on Monday or Monday night, with the threat lasting into Tuesday.

VFR conditions will prevail across the TAF period. Winds will be
gusty across the forecast area today with gusts upwards of 40
knots at all terminals. Winds diminish slightly overnight;
however, low-level winds will be strong creating long periods of
LLWS after 04Z/Thursday and continuing through 16Z/Thursday.
As a cold front approaches, rain will becoming increasingly
likely at KSME, KLOZ and KSYM after 16Z.
