Highs should be near normal today, and even higher Tuesday with
afternoon readings near 40. A major winter storm is expected to
reach the area Tuesday night and to persist through Thursday.
Heavy snow is expected along with blowing and drifting snow
Thursday. Widespread travel impacts are expected. Conditions will
become potentially dangerous Thursday with heavy snow, along with
blowing and drifting snow and colder temperatures.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 437 AM EST Mon Jan 31 2022

A persistent cloud layer was over the northwest half of the area
and was keeping temperatures from dropping off as they have been
over the rest of the area. Patchy dense freezing fog has been
developing outside of areas under the cloud canopy. This fog may
cause some brief impacts this morning including patchy slippery
roads where frost or rime deposits form. Otherwise the fog should
mix out by late morning and the clouds should scatter out by early
afternoon as return flow develops and increases. Temperatures
will be somewhat mild tonight with lows around 20 to near 25
degrees.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Confidence in a major winter storm continues to increase. Effects
of the storm will be profound causing major disruptions in
commerce and dangerous travel. The system will basically play out
in 3 stages or phases. The first part or phase will be the
passage of a cold front early Tuesday evening, causing
temperatures to fall below freezing over most areas Tuesday night.
At this time, the initial wave will bring a round of mixed
precipitation that will be mostly snow northwest to a mix over
central areas including Ft Wayne to just rain over far south areas
including Portland and Lima. Change over times and precipitation
types will be critical to snow amounts and icing. At this time,
thermal profiles support mainly snow north of a line from
Monticello to Ottawa (Ohio) with initially freezing rain or sleet
over these far south areas. Icing amounts could reach 0.15" but
at this time should stay below the 0.25" criteria for an ice storm
warning. Farther north, isentropic lift (per GFS 295K surface)
shows very good and sustained upglide with 4 g/kg moisture which
support 6-10" of snow in 12 hours. Have raised snow amounts in
this regard after collaboration with WPC and surrounding offices.

For the second wave on Thursday...the GFS has been all around an
outstanding model for the run-to-run consistency for several days
with the handling of this system. The EC has finally come on
board with the handling of a second wave that is expected to bring
heavy snowfall to the entire area Thursday. Travel will likely
become very difficult to impossible during the day Thursday.
Widespread blowing snow will likely significantly reduce
visibility with large snow drifts over open areas Thursday. The
hazardous conditions will effect midweek commutes. Unplowed
roads are likely to become impassable over most areas. Plummeting
wind chills accompanied by blowing and drifting snow could bring a
potentially lethal travel situation for anyone that becomes stuck
in your vehicle Thursday through Thursday night. As a result, and
after extensive coordination with WPC including a conference call,
have issued a winter storm watch that will basically cover the
period from early Wednesday night to early Friday night to
highlight and cover all of these concerns.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday Afternoon)
Issued at 1223 PM EST Mon Jan 31 2022

Morning MVFR stratus continues to clear the terminals and give
way to VFR conditions which should prevail into the overnight
period. Late tonight, the terminals will see an increase in high
clouds as surface ridging shifts to the east as an upper trough
and associated cold front advances towards the Great Lakes. The
LLJ associated with the approaching system will build over the
terminals and result in a prolonged period of LLWS. This is
expected to develop at KSBN initially around 4z before developing
at KFWA around 11z. Mid to low ceilings are expected to increase
across the forecast area within a WAA regime Tuesday morning, but
will hold the terminals in VFR for this issuance given lower
timing confidence. Towards the end of this TAF period, KSBN could
see rain showers move into the terminal as a cold front approaches
Chicagoland. Have held off on mentioning precip at KFWA as higher
chances are outside of this TAF period.
