A major winter storm during the holiday travel period will disrupt
plans for many.

Cloudy skies today with temperatures in the 30s. Conditions
deteriorate late Thursday afternoon and evening as rain changes to
snow. Much colder air will lead to a flash freeze Thursday
evening, then accumulating snow Thursday night through Friday
night. Winds will be quite strong, leading to blowing and drifting
snow with near blizzard conditions at times, especially on
Friday. Bitter cold wind chill temperatures will reach the 20
below to 30 below zero range this holiday weekend.

Midday upgrade to storm warning headlines will be issued shortly.
Increased model agreement and collaboration with surrounding
offices suggest a high likelihood of combined multi-hazard winter
event across entire CWA. Sharp gradient with heaviest snow across
northwest/north CWA with lake and trowal enhancements combine for
additive effects to final storm totals, nearing and potentially
exceeding a foot by daybreak Saturday in southwest Lower Michigan.
Strong isallobaric flow amid steep low level lapse rates with
peak wind gusts into 50-55 mph range on Friday to afford
potential power outages due to falling/swaying limbs and wind
chill indices plummeting dangerously cold, M20-M30.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Zonal flow aloft will become more amplified overnight ahead of our
winter storm, and high pressure at the surface this morning will
drift eastward with time. Winds increase slightly and shift to the
southeast throughout the period as the pressure gradient begins to
tighten, especially in our western CWA. We will be dry with mostly
cloudy skies becoming cloudy overnight. Highs will be in the low to
mid 30s along and north of US 24 today, and the mid to upper 30s
south. Lows will be in the upper 20s and low 30s tonight.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday Night through Tuesday)

The winter storm watch remains in effect for the entire forecast
area today, with little change from the previous model runs. As far
as the timing of the event and the general path of the system, have
medium to high confidence. With the start time, left it as 7 pm
Thursday as we'll see mostly rain or a wintry mix of rain/snow
during the day until we begin to changeover in the west closer to 2
pm EST or so, and then progress eastward through the late evening
hours. It is possible the changeover occurs earlier than what is
forecast, and we may need to put the start time closer to 2-5 pm
EST, but held off for now given lower confidence for that time
period. The main synoptic precipitation shield ahead of the
system will shift eastward through Thursday night, eventually
drying from SW to NE by Friday morning. In the meantime, the
trowal feature/wrap around moisture on the back side of the low
will continue to impact our northwest through Friday afternoon, in
addition to the contribution from lake effect (west winds off
Lake MI through the period). So the snow will taper off most
locations by Friday evening, with the exception of the lake shore
and areas approximately north of US 30.

The other question with this timeframe (and of course beyond) is how
the models will handle the phasing systems-with the east coast
surface low lifting out of Florida into the Carolinas by 7 pm Thu as
ours is centered across the Upper Great Lakes (legit from Lake
Superior to KY). As the upper jet max (165-170 knots) rounds the
base of the trough through Friday morning, the surface low will
deepen rapidly from around 1007 hPa to somewhere between 979 and 985
hPa, so as it begins to occlude the two lows sort of merge into an
amalgamated system that expands all the way from northern Ontario to
FLORIDA (which by Saturday AM is centered over James Bay Ontario at
968 hPa!). Meanwhile, we have a 1051 hPa arctic high settling over
the rockies and the plains (legit from Canada to TX), which will
expand eastward across the southeastern CONUS as it weakens slightly
through Saturday AM. This high will eventually reach into our
southern CWA-but there are differences with respect to how far into
our CWA it gets and when it gets there (this will depend on the
evolution/speed/intensity of the amalgamated low and the incoming
high).

The 30 hPa pressure rise/fall couplet from these two features moves
right over our CWA Thursday  night into Friday morning, then lingers
to our north and east as the low continues to occlude. Confidence is
more medium in the exact strength of the winds-as it will depend on
how the system phases and how far the surface high can inch
east/north. However, with strong cold air advection/isentropic
descent, decent lapse rates with the dry air moving in aloft (dry
slot area) and 50 knot jet at 850mb--expect to see wind gusts 45-55
mph.

Last but not least, lake effect continues through Sunday, though the
placement/strength of the high building in will determine how
quickly it comes to an end. Stronger high/low placement further
northeast would mean less lake effect, but if that low is further
south with a weaker high, then we will see decent lake effect snow
continue under cyclonic flow (lingering LL moisture), and an arctic
airmass flowing off Lake Michigan. We'll also have several
shortwaves pinwheeling around the low through Sunday to help us
increase our inversion heights and thus moderate/heavier snow
potential.

Monday into Tuesday we deal with a potent shortwave that dives down
from the Canadian Prairies. The ECMWF suggests we'll get more snow
with this as it develops a secondary upper low over northern Ontario
that follows quickly behind the initial shortwave. The GFS has this
secondary feature develop a little later and further north/west-
which prevents the precipitation from really developing over our
area, in addition to the drier surface air. Left low-chance
consensus pops for Monday, then left our forecast dry for the
remainder of the long term period.

Dangerous cold is still a threat, with highs on Thursday in the 30s
rapidly falling into the single digits by about 11 pm in the far
west, and then closer to morning east from there. Lows Thursday
night will range from 3 below (far southwest near White County, IN)
to 14 above, warmest far northeast near Hillsdale county. Highs
Friday-Sunday will struggle to make it out of the single digits,
though we will see some teens reappear Sunday in the north and far
east. Wind chills will still linger between -15 and -30 degrees this
weekend, coldest Thursday into Friday night. Temperatures
moderate into next week, with highs in the upper 20s and low 30s
by Wednesday afternoon.

A surface ridge was over the region with a light east flow and
lingering MVFR clouds close to the fuel-alternate cloud base. The
lower clouds should scatter out for a while as the flow becomes
southeast and some drier air spreads into the area. Otherwise, a
very strong upper level system will dig southeast Thursday. For now,
have ceilings dropping to 020 by the end of the TAF period, but
conditions will continue to deteriorate during Thursday afternoon.
