Issued at 416 AM CST Wed Dec 21 2022 Winter weather impacts arrive Thursday continuing through Saturday as a strong winter storm lifts toward the Great Lakes Region. Primary hazards include accumulating snow, strong winds, blowing snow, and extreme cold. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 416 AM CST Wed Dec 21 2022 Zonal flow aloft paired with a surface high centered over the Upper Mississippi River Valley will keep the weather quiet once again today. A stalled out cold front positioned over southeast parts of the state early this morning will lift northward as a warm front today. Highs will top out in the upper 20s across our northwest counties to low 40s in the southeast. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) ISSUED AT 416 AM CST Wed Dec 21 2022 Winter weather impacts arrive on Thursday, continuing through Saturday. The primary hazards included accumulating snow, strong winds, blowing snow, and extreme cold. Zonal flow aloft will be replaced by a deepening upper trough on Thursday as the polar jet dives southward into the Plains states. At the surface an open area of low pressure will lift into the Great Lakes Region by the end of the week, deepening and closing off as it does so. The latest guidance has once again sped up the passage of the low a bit through the local area, with it looking to deepen to its lowest pressure somewhere over the eastern Great Lakes Region or southeast Canada. QPF has come down a bit as a result, with most of the area looking to receive anywhere from 0.2-0.3" with most of this looking to fall during the daytime and early evening hours of Thursday. With the lower QPF, snow totals have also been lowered from the previous forecast with most areas looking to receive at least 2-3", some closer to 4". There still could be some locally higher amounts with any mesoscale induced bands that develop along the front or if higher SLRs are realized. The NBM snow probabilities for 4" of snow have come down quite a bit from just 12-24 hours ago with most areas sitting between a 20-30% chance. The 2" probability is pretty solid with ranges of 70-80% areawide, which falls in line nicely with our current totals. Winds really ramp up by Thursday evening as the pressure gradient quickly tightens between the deepening low and a strong Canadian surface high sinking into the Plains states. West-northwest winds with gusts up to 45 mph look to develop by Thursday evening, continuing into Friday night. Although snow amounts don't appear to be all that high, a fresh 1-2" of snow is all it takes for winds of this magnitude to blow it around and cause reductions in visibility. This may lead to blizzard-like conditions at times especially in open areas, creating very difficult travel conditions if not impossible at times. Temperatures will rapidly drop later Thursday into Thursday night, remaining well below normal throughout the weekend. Overnight lows Thursday night are expected to bottom out in the single digits below zero. This paired with the strong winds will create dangerously cold wind chills going into Friday morning as well as on the mornings following. The coldest wind chills throughout the weekend will be Friday morning with values as low as -25 to -35 expected. Wind chills will remain colder than -15 to -20 throughout the day on Friday. With the increase in travel due to the holiday, this does become very concerning especially if motorists find themselves stranded. In cold conditions like this, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin. Strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures stick around for the start of the weekend, possibly continuing to cause hazardous to dangerous travel conditions through Saturday. Winds will gradually lessen throughout the day on Saturday, though patchy to areas of blowing snow will still be possible. Wind chills on Saturday morning look to range from -20 to -30 with -15 to -20 on Christmas morning. Decided to leave the Winter Storm Watch as is for now since QPF has continued to come down a bit with each of the last few cycle runs. At this point, warning criteria snow (6 inches or more in 12 hours) does not appear likely, but impacts from blowing snow, bitterly cold temperatures, and increased holiday travel may warrant an upgrade. This is not a clear cut situation, but we should be able to make a more confident headline decision today after evaluating the 12Z suite of models. Temperatures start to moderate some going into the new week with the 8-14 day CPC temperature outlook looking promising for above normal temperatures to close out the month.
