The latest 12Z guidance suggests that some modifications will likely be needed in the Tuesday night through Wednesday morning time period (round 1). Slightly higher QPF amounts are being suggested where mid-level frontogenesis and upper- level jet dynamics coincide. Lows tonight will only drop into the lower to middle 30s under partly to mostly cloudy skies. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) ISSUED AT 251 AM CST Mon Jan 31 2022 As has been advertised for the past several days, the main forecast challenge continues to be the prolonged period of wintry precipitation expected by mid-week. 00z Jan 31 models have come into better agreement...with all solutions showing a distinct northern shift to the heavy snowfall axis. A cold front will settle southward on Tuesday and will stall just south of I-70 by Wednesday morning. Rain will gradually change to snow everywhere along/north of a Champaign to Taylorville line by daybreak Wednesday...with a swath of 2 to 4-inch snow accumulations from the Illinois River eastward to I-55 by the Wednesday morning commute. A mixed bag of freezing rain, sleet, and snow will be in place along a Paris to Shelbyville line...with rain further south. As the cold front slips further south, the icy precip will eventually reach I-70 by late afternoon. There will likely be a lull in precip rates Wednesday afternoon and evening as the strongest forcing shifts eastward away from the region. No hazardous weather is expected at this time. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY... Rain will be widespread Tuesday night and Wednesday, before changing to a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow. This mixture will persist through much of Thursday.
