Additional light precipitation chances will continue this morning
with a wintry mix mainly along/west of the Illinois River. Drier
weather is expected through midweek as temperatures gradually warm
each day. Widespread snow chances look possible Thursday night
into Friday.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
ISSUED AT 332 AM CST Mon Mar 7 2022

Water vapor imagery early this morning depicts a shortwave trough
lifting into eastern Iowa with it's associated surface low centered
over southeast Indiana. A cold front stretches southward from there
with most of the convective activity completely out of our area as
of 3 AM. Dry air feeding into the low has stripped our deep
saturation and cloud ice, which has put a pause on showers. Low-
level saturation remains in place with low stratus present area
wide. This paired with broad lift within the vicinity of the upper
wave has resulted in drizzle, which can be seen on radar and outside
the office window here in Lincoln. Further northwest, snow is
falling within the deformation zone where mid-level frontogenesis is
present. This will rotate eastward this morning, spreading deeper
saturation back into counties mainly along and west of the
Illinois River. There could be some wintry mix of sleet/freezing
rain before transitioning to light snow as we await the return of
cloud ice nuclei. Additional snow amounts of 1-2 inches or less
appear possible through midday along/west of the Illinois River.
Light ice accumulation of a few hundredths of an inch will be
possible as well. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for
counties along/west of the Illinois River through noon.

Surface high pressure slides southeast into the middle of the
country tonight, bringing several days of benign weather.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)
ISSUED AT 332 AM CST Mon Mar 7 2022

The surface high moves east of the area going into Tuesday, allowing
southerly return flow to bring milder temperatures back northward.
A shortwave trough will track through the Ohio River Valley
Tuesday night into Wednesday, sending a surface low into the
southeast US. Precipitation chances with this feature look to
stay south of the area with increased cloudiness being the only
impact. Further north, a low will track through southern Ontario,
sending a dry cold front through the area going into Wednesday.
The front looks to stall out somewhere across the area before
lifting back northward ahead of the next system to impact the
area.

Precipitation chances look to hold off here locally until later
in the week. A longwave trough will carve through the western
CONUS on Thursday with a northern and southern component noted. A
few bits of energy will eject northward along the aforementioned
stalled frontal boundary, increasing precipitation chances from
the dessert Southwest into the Upper Mississippi River Valley. The
northern stream of the trough will swing eastward going into
Friday, pushing the front into Illinois. Precipitation looks to
start as rain before Canadian high pressure on the backside of the
front pushes much colder air into the area, transitioning the
ptype to snow. The southern stream of the longwave trough looks to
quickly lift northeast, merging with the northern stream and
spinning up a potent low pressure system that will lift into the
Northeast US. Ensemble guidance continues to point to accumulating
snowfall with this system area wide, though there remains
considerable spread in amounts.

Much colder temperatures look likely Friday into the beginning of
the weekend with the potential for overnight lows to dip down into
the teens (10-15 degrees below normal). The cold snap looks to be
short-lived with temperatures rebounding back near normal to close
out the weekend.

Messy conditions are ongoing to start the day with IFR to LIFR
flight restrictions across the area. Ceilings less than 1k ft and
visbys between 2-5 SM will linger through about midday as a
wintry mix of precipitation continues. Precipitation chances
should end by late this morning or early afternoon with a slow
improvement back to VFR category by this evening. Northwest winds
will be breezy today before relaxing tonight as they back to a
westerly direction.
