Area forecast discussion, Jan 15, 12:43 PM EST, 1 hour 7 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Wilmington OH
1243 PM EST Sat Jan 15 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure and a cool airmass will build in across the region
today through tonight. Snow will develop Sunday afternoon into
Sunday night as a low pressure system moves through the region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Upper level low will continue to dig down through the Plains
this morning and begin to pivot southeast into the lower
Mississippi Valley through this afternoon. While pcpn associated
with this feature is currently moving south southeast through
the mid Mississippi Valley and will generally remain off to our
west, a finger of somewhat deeper moister will continue to brush
across southwest portions of our FA through the next hour or so.
This has led to a few very light snow showers/flurries across
parts of SE IN and N KY, with some minor reductions in VSBYs
collocated with the strongest echoes thus far this morning.
Nonetheless, this deeper moisture will continue to progress
south/east and exit the ILN FA toward late morning with a
clearing trend evolving from north to south by mid/late
afternoon. Highs today will be on the cool side, ranging from
the mid 20s in the northwest to the lower 30s in the south.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Strengthening surface low will pivot across the Gulf Coast
States tonight as surface high pressure remains across the
Great Lakes. With the airmass across our area remaining fairly
dry, expect mostly clear skies through much of the night.
Overnight lows will range from the mid teens north to the lower
20s across the far south.

The surface low will lift northeast through the day on Sunday.
As the better energy begins to shift to the east coast, a
stronger primary surface low will develop over the Carolinas
with the remnants of the original low weakening as it lifts
northeast through the eastern Tennessee Valley. Low level jet
energy associated with the main low will shift north across the
Appalachians through Sunday afternoon, nosing northwest into the
upper Ohio Valley. This will allow for pcpn to develop
northeastward into mainly our southeastern areas through Sunday
afternoon. It will also lead to a bit of a warm bulge aloft
shifting north into our area through mid to late afternoon to
late, perhaps allowing for some mix of rain/snow, especially
across our southeast. Even with that though, we will begin to
see some accumulating snow possible through late afternoon
across our southeast. Highs on Sunday will be in the low to mid
30s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Heading into Sunday night, snow will continue to fall, with the best
rates focused on points east of the Scioto River. As is normal with
winter storm systems in the extended term, global models are still
in flux with each updated run. The 00Z ECMWF ensemble mean has come
in further to the north and west with its heavier snowfall, while
the GFS ensemble mean is east. In addition, we are beginning to pull
in some high resolution models. Notable is the 3km NAM Nest, which
has 3-4 inch snowfall totals southeast of Interstate 71. Meanwhile
the 06Z HRRR is much further southeast with less than 2" totals for
our entire Watch area. For now, will stick with adding one tier of
counties west of the earlier watch to allow for the NAM/Euro
Ensemble potential solution. Looking ahead, today will be a critical
day as some continuity should begin to develop in the suite of high
resolution models.

The significant snowfall will begin to taper off in the east late
Sunday night while colder, drier air advects into the region from
the west. Winds out of the west and northwest will become gusty in
this CAA pattern heading into Monday. This may cause some blowing of
snow onto roads during the day. Also have increased PoPs Monday with
guidance now bringing an increase in snow showers in the convergent
northwesterly flow behind the departing system. Highs on Monday will
be generally in the lower 30s.

Expect some decrease in clouds Tuesday as weak high pressure
centered over the deep south ridges across the Ohio Valley. However,
by Wednesday, a quick-moving low pressure area will slide across the
Great Lakes, dragging a strong cold front east through the forecast
area. Have introduced a chance of rain ahead of the front Wednesday
afternoon and evening. High temperatures peak from the mid 30s to
near 40 Tuesday and Wednesday, then drop to the mid to upper 20s
behind the front on Thursday and Friday.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Some MVFR CIGs are still lingering across the region, especially
for the Tri-State terminals, but expect an overall improving
trend through mid/late afternoon as weak high pressure builds in
from the north and skies trend clearer through 00z. VFR
conditions are expected past 21z through the remainder of the
TAF period. A few cirrus are expected overnight with an increase
in midlevel clouds from the south toward 18z Sunday and beyond.
Any pcpn will hold off until after the end of the 24-hr TAF
period.

NE winds around 10-12kts will persist through about 06z before
relaxing subtly toward daybreak and beyond. Winds will generally
stay out of the NE through the entire TAF period.

OUTLOOK...MVFR/IFR conditions are likely Sunday evening into
Monday morning, with a chance of snow, especially for central
Ohio terminals. Occasional MVFR conditions and snow showers will
continue into Monday, with MVFR ceilings may continue into
Tuesday.
