What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this beach hazards statement went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Wilmington, NC wrote its last area forecast discussion before this beach hazards statement went out at Sep 5, 10:00 AM EDT, 25 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Sep 5, 10:00 AM EDT, 25 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wilmington NC
1000 AM EDT Mon Sep 5 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure ridge axis extending across the area from the NE,
will weaken as it pushes to and off the Carolina Coasts by
Tue. Look for onshore winds and seasonable temperatures thru
tonight along with isolated to scattered showers and possibly
thunderstorms. A front will reach the Coastal Carolinas by
Wednesday, stalling and lingering near the coast into next
weekend, further enhancing the shower and thunderstorm
potential and coverage.

&&

UPDATE/...
No changes to the forecast at this time.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Upper ridge axis to slide further east and offshore and
suppressed to the SE-S during this period. The accompanying sfc
ridge axis will weaken as it too slides to and off the Carolina
coasts this period. Sfc flow will generally veer to the SE-S
today and due S tonight with flow aloft becoming more
southwesterly. Look for an increasing moisture atm column and
combined with a resultant wind boundary (aka weak sea breeze)
and the days insolation, expect isolated showers moving onshore
this morning, to blossom into a few tstorms and increasing in
coverage as they progress further inland. Diurnal heating will
also result in basic airmass type tstorm activity inland this
aftn into the evening, with ILM SC counties the hotspot. For
late tonight, may see low topped nocturnal showers over the
adjacent Atl waters push onshore once again. Daytime highs will
run at or a category above normal followed by tonights lows
running a category or 2 above normal.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Through the short term, surface high pressure will sit offshore
to our NE. Upper level ridging will start to break down
throughout the day as the trough to our west pushes towards us.
Deeper moisture from the SW will move in over the entire area,
increasing precip chances in the afternoon, particularly along
the sea breeze.

Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s with lows in the upper
60s, with warmer overnight conditions near the coast.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The trough from our west will push in paired with surface
low pressure and a cold front. This front will move over the
area throughout Wednesday before stalling along the coast
through the rest of the period. This will enhance chances for
diurnal convection.

Guidance is suggesting lower PWATS than what it's been
trending, now sticking with around 1.5-2", but we could get +2"
near the end of the week owing to the possibility of higher
rainfall amounts.

Temps for Wednesday will be tricky due to frontal timing, but
at the moment we're expecting to be able to warm up to near 90
across much of the CWA. Afterwards, highs are expected to be in
80s with lows in the lower 70s.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
VFR conditions will dominate this periodic...except for possible
MVFR/IFR fog inland terminals predawn Tue. Isolated convection
at the coastal terminals later this morning into midday. With
better pcpn chances at the inland terminals from mid afternoon
thru early evening, with FLO more favorable than LBT to observe
thunder. Still a hit and miss at this point and will therefore
use VCSH/VCTS where and when appropriate. Early this morning,
nearly calm winds, especially inland, will become SE-S 5 to 10
kt as the day progresses. The hier end of this range, with
possible g15 kt, will occur at the coastal terminals from midday
thru early evening. Will see an increase in ci/cs coverage
during this 24 hr period as well as convective debris clouds
tonight. Will see widely nocturnal shra off the Carolina coasts
that will likely affect the coastal terminals prior to daybreak
Tue.

Extended Outlook...Mainly VFR. Early morning ground fog with
brief MVFR/IFR visibility is possible Tuesday. Isolated mainly
afternoon showers and thunderstorms are also possible Tue. An
increase in convective coverage and periodic flight restrictions
Wed thru Fri as a front stalls in the vcnty.

&&

.MARINE...
Through Tonight...
Sfc ridge axis over land, will weaken as it slides to and off
the Carolina Coasts during this period. This will result in
veering winds from ESE to SE-S later today and basically
becoming due S all waters during tonight. The sfc pg to remain
relaxed with windspeeds around 10 kt, periodically 10-15 kt this
aftn into tonight, especially closer to the coast due to diurnal
influences, ie. the inland progression of the sea breeze, albeit
weak. Main concern will be the continued small 8 to 10 second
period ESE-SE swell with small wind chop on top. However,
Earl's forerunner 10+ second period SE swell will be at the
doorsteps of the ILM waters come daybreak Tue. For this fcst
period, overall still looking at generally 2 to 3 foot seas.
Convection coverage will generally be showers with better shot
of tstorm coverage from cape Fear south, especially south of
Murrells Inlet this am.

Tuesday through Friday...
SW'ly winds 10-12kts with 15kt gusts will hold for Tuesday before
a front moves through Wednesday. Winds are looking more
variable in direction with the front in the area, dropping to
around 7kts before they start to build back in Thursday. Winds
then stay N/NE'ly at 10- 13kt with 15-17kt gusts through the
end of the period.

Seas 2-3ft building to around 4ft by Thursday due to a ESE 4ft
swell generated by Earl. The period of this swell will increase
from 10 to 12s by the end of the period, potentially sticking
around even. longer. However, this will be highly dependent on
the track and intensity of Earl. An ENE 3ft swell will build in
by the end of the period. The rip current threat will have to be
closely monitored this week.
