.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday night)
Issued at 316 PM CST Wed Feb 16 2022

A rather quick moving Winter Storm will affect the area late
tonight through Thursday afternoon. Main changes from previous
forecast was to tweak up snow totals across the Wichita area into
the central Flint Hills. Also delayed mixed wintry precip onset
until mainly after midnight. The approaching upper trof was in the
process of bottoming out across southeast Arizona/southwest New
Mexico this afternoon and will eject northeastward tonight across
the southern high Plains. In the meantime, surface cold front
along the turnpike corridor will move southward across southeast
Kansas. A few showers/elevated storms are possible later this
evening along the front in southeast Kansas with a marginal risk
for hail and wind. Stronger forcing for ascent will increase after
midnight with scattered to numerous areas of precip developing
over the colder low level air advecting south across the area. The
short term models are in general agreement depicting a persistent
area of frontogenesis developing along and just south of the
highway 50 corridor in the 06z-12z time frame, collocated with
some elevated instability. Character of the thermal profile
remains a challenge early on, especially if the stronger warm nose
of the NAM verifies, which would suggest a bit more mixed phase
precip/ice late tonight. However the transition to snow is
expected to be the main impact across south central Kansas toward
dawn with some convection possible. This is also when the best
lift in the dendritic snow growth zone will begin, owing to bursts
of heavy snow. Further south and east toward the Oklahoma border
and across southeast Kansas, a longer duration of mixed phase
precip/freezing rain/sleet is expected until changeover to snow
later Thursday morning. A combination of snow and ice will result
in hazardous travel as well there during the day on Thursday.
Strong north winds will affect all areas with blowing and drifting
snow further exacerbating travel conditions. The developmental
trowal axis/deformation zone looks to allow accumulating snow to
linger a bit longer into the early afternoon for southeast Kansas
before shutting down by late afternoon.

Another cold front associated with a northern stream upper trof
is expected to backdoor eastern Kansas Friday night. This will
temper any warmup over the snow covered areas, with western
portions of central Kansas relatively milder Friday and Saturday.

Somewhat more zonal flow aloft late in the weekend with general
troughing across the western conus early next week. This will
allow colder air to settle southward across the Plains again.
However confidence on timing of meaningful precip and type is not
as high.

Issued at 1210 PM CST Wed Feb 16 2022

The cold front stretching from southwest Kansas to northwest
Missouri at midday, will continue pushing southward. The front
should push through ICT around 1930z and CNU toward 00z-01z.
Southwesterly winds gusting to 35-45 mph ahead of the front, will
become northerly. The north winds will increase with gusts of
30-35 knots this evening through Thursday morning. Elevated
instability and lift associated with the approaching storm system,
will result in clusters of showers/thunderstorms this evening
across south-central and southeast Kansas which could affect the
ICT and CNU terminals with downpours and perhaps small hail.

The brunt of the lift and widespread precipitation from the storm
system will arrive around/after 06z tonight into Thursday
morning. There will be a chance of light snow at SLN and GBD
terminals, but it is very uncertain if there will be any
accumulation there. A transition zone of freezing rain/sleet will
affect south-central through east-central KS and the Flint Hills
between 06-12z, before the precip chances to all snow which could
be heavy at times, with several inches of accumulation likely at
HUT and ICT terminals with some blowing/drifting. The transition
zone will arrive at the CNU terminal in the 11z-15z time window
with rain changing to freezing rain/sleet, then ending as some
accumulating snow late morning/midday.

A wintry mix will expand in coverage late tonight and into the

are expected to become more widespread after 3 am.

A winter storm will impact the area through Thursday, with
