Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wichita KS 1200 PM CST Tue Dec 20 2022 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday night) Issued at 311 AM CST Tue Dec 20 2022 Water vapor imagery currently shows an upper impulse tracking across the Lower Mississippi Valley with a more significant upper trough extending from British Columbia into the Upper Mississippi Valley. At the surface, cold front stretches from eastern IA through Southeast KS with some Arctic air starting to spill into the Northern Plains and making it down into Nebraska. Shortwave energy will move into the Northern Great Lakes region today while some more robust upper energy starts to dig over the Pacific northwest this evening. Colder air will continue to slowly sink south today and will allow below normal temps to be in place with most readings not making it to the freezing mark. By Wed morning upper trough will continue to dig from the Northern Rockies into the Great Basin with this highly anomalous trough expected to swing across the Plains late Wed night through Thu. All models have sped up the timing of this trough from yesterday's runs which has also resulted in the strong cold front moving through faster. It is now looking like the front will be through the forecast area by 12z Thu. This faster movement will also have an affect on snow totals, with the 00z guidance coming-in with lower amounts. These lower amounts fit with the synoptic setup with the TROWAL setting up much further northeast and all of our snow having to fall in only a few hour period Thu morning. So confidence is increasing in advisory levels snows with most sites in the 1-3 inch range. We will keep the winter storm watch going however, because with the strong winds expected, we still could see some serious reductions in visibility with blowing snow. Confidence remains very high that we will eventually need a wind chill warning for the entire area for Thu through at least Fri morning. With this airmass we are looking at standardized anomalies in the -3 to -4 range for Thu night and Fri. Highs on Thu will be likely not make it out of the single digits. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Monday) Issued at 311 AM CST Tue Dec 20 2022 By Fri morning, deep upper trough will be digging over the Ohio Valley with strong northwest flow aloft over the Plains. Winds Fri will not be nearly as strong as Thu but will still be gusty enough to produce very dangerous wind chills, especially during the morning hours. There is some decent model agreement in some weak upper energy quickly moving out into the Plains for Fri night, but we are currently not expecting any precip with this. Temps will slowly start to moderate this weekend and by Sun, readings should be approaching the freezing mark with 40s possible by the start of the next work week. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) Issued at 1148 AM CST Tue Dec 20 2022 IFR/MVFR cigs will continue to slowly erode from west to east with some holes across portions of southeast KS. Clouds may be slowest to diminish across far southeast KS where some MVFR cigs may remain through the afternoon hours before redeveloping and expanding across the area during the overnight and early morning hours on Wed.
