.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night)

KEY MESSAGES

* Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chill values mid-week
* Light, mostly low-impact, snow Wednesday night

A deepening SFC low over the Upper Midwest will continue to
translate ENE into the Great Lakes through tonight, sending a cold
front south through Kansas by sunrise Wednesday. This will usher
in a noticeably colder airmass compared to today, and will also
set the stage for a quick round of wintry weather Wednesday
evening through early Thursday morning. While the SFC cold front
will push through the area, a low-mid level frontal zone will get
hung up NW to SE across the Central Plains as a progressive, and
weak, s/w approaches the area from the NW. This will setup a zone
of low- mid level frontogenesis along the developing baroclinic
zone, with additional lift from mid-level WAA and low-mid level
convergence. Overall, lift doesn't look overly impressive with
this wave, and model guidance haven't shown any significant
changes towards a deeper and/or stronger wave. Additionally,
forecast soundings continue to show some delayed moistening, with
a very transient period of overlap between the best lift and
moisture. It's worth noting that 12z model guidance have trended
deeper with the DGZ as the column quickly cools by 12z/THU. It's
noteworthy because a deeper DGZ can help to augment the lack of
better lift in situations like this. However, by the time the
deeper DGZ is realized, the better lift will be shifting east away
from the area.

Based on all of the above, and with negative EPV above the frontal
zone, it appears that there will be broken bands of snow that
initially develop over the Rockies before spreading ESE through
NE/KS Wednesday evening through early Thursday morning. The
potential for a more banded evolution of the snow makes the
snow amount forecast tricky, and there may end up being stripes
of snow as opposed to one larger swath of snow. In general,
though, because of the less than favorable overlap of lift and
moisture, snowfall rates and amounts should be on the lower side.
We're still thinking a dusting to 2", highest along the I-70
corridor. Of note, given the deeper DGZ towards the end of the
event, any trend towards better lift could allow some higher
snowfall amounts to be realized (maybe a few 2-4" amounts),
especially if any better organized band can develop. Several
ensemble members continue to suggest this potential. While this
may be in the "worst-case scenario", it's still worth noting.
Despite the banded potential, confidence continues to be on the
lower side regarding the potential of seeing 2"+ snowfall amounts.
Multiple probabilistic tools only give about a 20-30% chance of
exceeding 2" anywhere in our CWA, which makes sense given the
above- mentioned limitations (lift, moisture, etc). For these
reasons, we'll hold off on issuing a Winter Weather Advisory on
this shift.

Regardless of snowfall, confidence is high that a push of
anomalously cold air will accompany, and follow, the round of snow.
Breezy north winds accompanying the push of Arctic air will lead to
dangerously cold wind chill values Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. With high confidence in this occurring, a Wind Chill
Advisory will be issued on this shift, focusing on areas along and
north/west of the I-35/KS Turnpike corridor, including the
greater Wichita metro. If models trend colder, the Advisory may
need to be expanded in area. For now, we're focusing on where the
greatest risk of wind chills falling into the -10 to -20 degree
range is. Temperatures Thursday night will continue to be very
cold, but high pressure building in will lead to lighter winds and
a lower risk of dangerously cold wind chills.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Tuesday)

The long range period looks to feature a mostly progressive weather
pattern with a couple of cold front passages (one over the weekend
and another early next week). The general theme will be a quick
moderation of temps early in the upcoming weekend, followed by
colder air settling in and getting reinforced late in the weekend
into early next week. The progressive nature doesn't give much
opportunity for deeper moisture to get pulled into the area, and it
looks like a dry signal, precip-wise. Breezy/windy conditions are
likely ahead of, and behind, the initial cold front over the
weekend, and this could lead to an elevated fire danger on Saturday.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

Main aviation concern will be some wind shear overnight.

Currently have a very strong upper jet extending from the Pacific
Northwest into the Central Plains with an upper impulse about to
move into the Northern Rockies. Winds are expected to gradually
flip to the northwest this evening as a weak cold front moves
through. Once you get to around 2,000ft, northwest winds will be
much stronger this evening, in the 40-45kt range, setting up some
low level wind shear. Confidence remains highs that VFR
conditions will remain in place through the next 24 hours with
just some high clouds anticipated.

.FIRE WEATHER...

The elevated fire danger from this afternoon may continue into this
evening as a cold front moves through with a noticeable wind shift.
While humidity will be recovering, any fire control activities from
this afternoon may have to contend with the wind shift this
evening/tonight. Overall, though, significant fire weather concerns
are not expected over the next few days. Looking ahead, an elevated
fire danger may develop late in the week as southerly winds increase
and as temperatures warm (especially Saturday).

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central Kansas,
South Central Kansas and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Strong south winds with gusts of 35 to 40 mph will affect the Flint
Hills and southeast Kansas this afternoon. This will result in
several hours of very high grassland fire danger.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

A fast moving weather system will bring a round of light snow to
parts of central and eastern Kansas from late Wednesday evening
through early Thursday morning. At this time, a couple inches of
snowfall are possible, mainly closer to the I-70 corridor. A dusting
to perhaps one inch is possible as far south as the highway 54
corridor, including greater Wichita. Dangerously cold wind chills
are expected as well by early Thursday morning, ranging from 5 below
to as low as 20 below, with the lowest readings along the I-70
corridor.
