.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night)

Challenging forecast, with a handful of chances for showers and
thunderstorms through the weekend.

Late this afternoon-this evening...There is a conditional risk for a
few isolated thunderstorms across southeast Kansas late this
afternoon and evening, as a surface dryline/cold front combo
advances east, along with an associated upper shortwave. Low clouds
are currently inhibiting surface heating and associated
destabilization over southeast KS. However, thinking there'll be a
narrow corridor of heating over the Flint Hills by peak heating.
Combination of this narrow corridor of instability and especially
deep layer shear is supportive of rotating updrafts and associated
severe weather. However, convergence decreases some along the
surface trough by late this afternoon, and the upper shortwave races
east of the region prior to peak heating, acting to increase large-
scale subsidence within the warm/moist sector. Consequently, suspect
storms will have a difficult time forming within this environment,
as evidenced by most convection-allowing models. Will hold onto a
conditional risk for severe storms in the forecast in case a storm
forms.

Late tonight-Thursday...Thursday looks cloudy with widespread
drizzle chances increasing from south to north, as low-level
moisture advection and upslope flow commences in response to the
frontal zone lifting back north. The widespread drizzle should keep
temperatures down especially west of the Flint Hills, where cooler
50s-60s are possible. Thinking the NAM model is tough to beat in
situations like this. Additionally, the increasing deep warm/moist
advection may support a few elevated thunderstorms late tonight
through Thursday morning, especially north of Highway 50 or 56.
Similar to today, this too is a conditional risk, as large-scale
subsidence in response to shortwave ridging should prevent
widespread deep moist convection from forming. However, if a few
updrafts are able to sustain themselves, the combination of elevated
instability and cloud-bearing deep layer shear would support
dime-quarter size hail or even a bit larger.

Thursday afternoon-night...There is another conditional risk for a
few late afternoon-evening thunderstorms for locations mainly west
of I-135 across mainly south-central KS, as a dryline sharpens
across southwest KS and northwest OK on southward. If the NAM
verifies, suspect this threat will remain southwest of the forecast
area, although the global models mix this dryline further east
closer to south-central KS. Even if the further east global models
verify, suspect lack of large-scale upper forcing, height rises, and
mid-level warming will tend to suppress widespread deep moist
convection from forming. However, if a few isolated thunderstorms
are able to form, shear/instability combination would support severe
weather. Stay tuned.

Friday-Friday night...Very windy and warm weather will prevail
Friday, as High Plains low pressure deepens in response to stout
shortwave energy approaching over the western CONUS. Suspect a wind
advisory will be needed, especially along/west of the Flint Hills,
where gusts will likely approach 45 mph. Additionally, increasing
large-scale ascent and associated mid-level cooling and moistening
may support a few thunderstorms Friday evening-night along and ahead
of the sharpening dryline, especially over generally the western
half of Kansas. Strong to severe storms are possible.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Wednesday)

Saturday-Saturday night...Model consensus supports deep
western/central CONUS longwave troughing, along with an associated
strong cold frontal zone oozing southeast through Mid-America. This
should support scattered to numerous showers/thunderstorms across
mainly eastern/southeast Kansas Saturday afternoon-night. Despite
good deep layer shear, model consensus is only modest with
instability, possibly in response to increased mid-upper level
moisture and associated modest mid-level lapse rates. Additionally,
mid-upper flow is mostly parallel to frontal zone, increasing the
chances for storm interference. Consequently, extent/magnitude of
severe weather chances are in question Saturday afternoon-evening.
This event has the potential to be a good rain-maker over southeast
KS given the parallel orientation of the front to mid-upper flow.

Sunday-Wednesday...Quiet weather look to prevail during this period.
Sunday-Monday temperatures will be seasonal mostly in the 60s, with
readings warming back into the 70s and possibly 80s by mid-week.

Low clouds over southeast Kansas will slowly spread northwest
across the region overnight, as low level moisture increases from
east and southeast winds. IFR cigs are expected to develop
over southern KS and gradually spread northward into central KS
Thursday mid morning. The low clouds will be slow to erode across
the area.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Friday and Saturday have the potential to be critical fire
weather days, especially generally west of I-135, as strong/gusty
south winds get cranking. Winds will be strongest Friday, although
humidity will be marginal in the 30s-40s percent. Saturday winds
will decrease some, although humidity will be more critical in the
teens-20s percent.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central Kansas,
South Central Kansas and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Areas of dense fog will affect much of south central and southeast
Kansas overnight. Visibilities could be reduced to around a quarter
of a mile at times. Please see latest dense fog advisory for more
details.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Areas of dense fog will affect much of south central and southeast
Kansas during the early morning hours on Thursday.

A few thunderstorms are possible across the area through early
afternoon Thursday. While widespread coverage is not expected,
quarter size hail is possible if a storm or two is able to form.

There is another conditional thunderstorm risk Thursday late
afternoon and evening across mainly south-central Kansas west of
I-135. Confidence is low that storms will even form. However, if
storms do form, severe weather is possible. Stay tuned.

Strong and gusty south winds and very high to extreme grassland
fire danger is likely Friday across the region. Gusts up to 45 mph
are likely.

A few thunderstorms cannot be ruled out Friday evening and night
mainly west of the Kansas Turnpike, but better severe weather
chances will likely remain across western Kansas.

Elevated grass fire danger will prevail Saturday across the region,
but especially west of I-135.

Scattered to numerous thunderstorm chances look to increase
Saturday afternoon and night for locations mainly along and
southeast of the Kansas Turnpike. Strong to severe storms and
locally heavy rainfall are possible. Stay tuned for later
forecasts.
