.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday night)
Issued at 229 PM CDT Sat Oct 22 2022

Key Details:

* A Red Flag Warning is in effect for portions of central Kansas. A
  Fire Weather Watch is in effect for portions of central and south-
  central Kansas.

* A high wind watch is in effect for Russell and Barton Counties. A
  wind advisory is in effect for the rest of the CWA.

* A conditional severe risk will be possible Sunday while beneficial
  rainfall is expected for southeast Kansas.

Water vapor imagery shows a strong upper level trough digging into
the Southwest. Multiple pieces of energy are expected to round the
larger trough. The first shortwave trough will eject into the
Central Plains on Sunday, which will lead to strong synoptic winds
of 30 to 40 mph sustained, gusts up to 60 mph, and extreme to
catastrophic grassland fire danger concerns. See fire weather
section for more details.

A highly conditional severe threat will also be present on Sunday.
Storms will likely struggle to break a capped environment, however,
with a strong surface low in the low 980s providing forcing as well
as a sharp dryline, there may be enough lift to break the cap.
Especially when the cold front meets up with the dry line. If a
storm can go there will be the potential for damaging winds up to 70
mph. The 12z NAM shows 55-70kt winds at 850mb Sunday evening and any
storm that can tap into that would likely go severe quickly due to
those strong winds mixing down. The hail and tornado risk appear low
as any storm that does go up looks to be elevated. However, the
mesoscale models do show long curved hodographs so if a storm could
get rooted in the boundary layer, it could pose a hail and tornado
risk.

A complicated setup is expected Monday into Tuesday. Models continue
to trend faster with the lead shortwave, which pushes the cold front
further east along with the rain. This continues to shift the best
rain into southeast Kansas. Rich moisture will get pulled northward
from hurricane Roslyn after it makes landfall on the Mexican coast.
Two to three inches of rain will be possible where the heaviest band
sets up.

We should see things dry out Tuesday, however the HWRF hurricane
model has shown the potential for the remnants of Roslyn to track
through Oklahoma with rain northwest of the center. Global models
continue to favor a southern track of upper low so confidence is low
in the HWRF solution, but it could be something to watch, especially
if we see the global models trend back north with the upper low.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Saturday)

The active pattern looks to continue with another potential trough
this week. It's too early to tell just how impactful this trough
will be, but there's some decent agreement between location of the
trough and depth on the probabilistic models so it may be another
chance for precipitation. However, we'll likely see some changes in
the forecast after models resolve the early week trough.

VFR will prevail tonight with breezy southerly winds and LLWS
impacting much of the area tonight before subsiding early in the
period on Sunday. Strong southerly winds will develop across the
region on Sunday with the highest speeds impacting our central KS
counties where some blowing dust could reduce visibility at times
during the afternoon hours. Damaging wind gusts around 50 knots
will be possible. The best chance for storms is expected to arrive
after 06Z tomorrow although there remains low probabilities for
some isolated or widely scattered storms along the dryline
impacting central KS during the evening hours.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 229 PM CDT Sat Oct 22 2022

Extreme to catastrophic fire danger is expected Sunday due to low
relative humidity and very strong winds. A red flag warning is in
effect for counties west of I-135 and a fire weather watch is in
effect for the counties between I-135 and the Kansas Turnpike.
Strong gusts up to 60 mph will be possible for Russell and Barton
County while gusts up to 55 mph will be possible for areas along and
west of the Turnpike.

Uncertainty exists further east of the Kansas Turnpike with relative
humidity values above 40%. It may be difficult for a fire to start,
but if a fire can get going it could spread quickly.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central Kansas,
South Central Kansas and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Very strong and gusty south winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected
Sunday, with gusts likely exceeding 50 to 55 mph at times. This will
lead to elevated fire danger across the entire area Sunday, most
critical from central Kansas on westward, see the fire weather watch
and red flag warning for more details.

There will be a small chance for storms on Sunday. However, if a
storm can go up it will likely become severe with the main threat
being damaging winds up to 70 mph.

The potential for widespread meaningful rainfall is increasing
Monday through early Tuesday across the region, especially over
southeast Kansas. Widespread amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible,
with locally higher amounts. Please stay tuned for later forecasts.
