.SYNOPSIS...
A return to colder temperatures is expected behind a strong cold
front tonight through Monday before moderating again by the
middle of next week. An area of low pressure will track well
offshore of New England on Sunday before high pressure builds
near the area for the beginning and middle of next week. Another
storm system may then bring rain or snow to the region late next
week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
0222Z Update...
Scattered upslope snow showers over the mountains continue to
weaken this evening per latest radar trends. Webcams near the
Canadian border do show some flurry activity continuing despite
clearing beginning to take place. We hold on to low chance pops
for a few more hours before any leftover very light
precipitation comes to a complete end.

This shifts us focus to the south where precipitation in the
form of light snow continues to slowly spread northeast into
southern New England. Will continue to monitor trends in latest
available guidance which suggests a light coating of snow can be
expect, mainly south of a Concord NH to Portland ME line. The
coast from Biddeford and points southwards through coastal
Rockingham county may possibly pick up slightly more in the way
of snow accumulation if new model trends continue.

2253Z Update...
Much cold air continues to advect into the region on gusty west
to northwest winds. Significant cold air advection will allow
for H8 temperatures to drop into the -10C to -16C range by
morning. There will be a relatively well mixed layer through
much of the night. By morning, temperatures will be mostly in
the single numbers in the north to the teens in the south. Some
lower 20s remain possible over the far south.

This strong cold air advection and upslope conditions will allow
for snow showers for several more hours in the mountains. This
is supported by the latest mesoscale models and northern
webcams. Another stripe of light snow may reach southernmost
areas by daybreak.

Overview: A return to significantly colder temperatures is
expected tonight through Monday behind a strong cold front which
crossed the area today. These colder conditions will likely be
accompanied by a few snow showers and even an isolated heavier
snow squall, especially across the north. Another system will
then pass well offshore on Sunday but may brush coastal areas
with a few snow flurries or snow showers.

Impacts: Temperatures will rapidly fall late this afternoon and
evening, which will allow any rain showers to quickly turn to
snow across the north. These snow showers combined with falling
temperatures may allow for locally slick travel conditions this
evening, mainly across the higher elevations and near the
International Border.

Forecast Details: The cold front has now cleared our coastline
as of 20Z but surface observations indicate that winds are still
out of the southwest across the entire area. This strong
southwesterly LLJ allowed temperatures to reach the lower and
middle 50s across much of the area with preliminary data showing
that Portland hit 54F, which breaks the previous record of 51F
set back in 1984. Satellite imagery show mostly sunny skies
south of the mountains but across the mountains and near the
International Border more in the way of cloud cover is present
along with a few rain showers.

Upstream observations across Quebec show significantly colder
air with temperatures primarily into the 20s. This colder air
will quickly begin to bleed into northwestern areas this
evening, allowing any rain to quickly transition into snow. The
latest near-term guidance continues to indicate that a few
scattered snow showers are likely across the north through this
evening and with steep low-level lapse rates an isolated heavier
snow squall cannot be ruled out. It will remain breezy through
this evening with southwest winds shifting to northwest and
gusting as high as 30-35 mph at times.

Later tonight any snow shower activity will end as it turns
sharply colder with overnight low temperatures digging to around
zero across the north to the teens and lower 20s south. It will
remain breezy and therefore wind chill values may approach 10
below across the north.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Cool Canadian high pressure will build to our west on Sunday as
a developing area of low pressure passes well offshore to our
southeast. This system will remain too far offshore for any
significant impacts but a stray flurry or snow shower cannot be
ruled out, mainly along the coast. It will be a much colder day
with high temperatures only reaching the teens and 20s from
north to south. Cold but dry conditions are then expected on
Sunday night with overnight low temperatures falling to below
zero across the north to the single digits and lower teens
south. It will still be a little breezy due to the PGF overhead
and therefore wind chills may approach 20 below across the north
on Monday morning.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Much colder conditions arrive Monday around the periphery of an
intensifying ocean storm. Temperatures will only be in the teens
to lower 20s for afternoon highs with wind chill values making
it feel even colder. These below normal temperatures will
continue into Monday night with readings below zero in the
north and single numbers in the south.

A warming trend then follows towards the end of the week with
the possibility of ice beginning to move. Low pressure will
allow for particularly mild southwesterly winds by Thursday.

.AVIATION /02Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Short Term...VFR cigs expected through Sunday night outside of
any snow shower activity. Southwesterly winds will turn
northwesterly this evening and may gust up to 35 kts at times.

Long Term...MVFR conditions develop in patchy fog and developing
showers Thursday through early Friday morning.
