.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure brings quiet weather into Thursday before a large
low pressure system impacts New England Thursday night through
Friday night. This system will bring wintry precipitation at
first, and then heavy rain, possible flooding, strong winds, and
coastal impacts as we enter a period of high astronomical
tides. Drier and breezy conditions are expected over the
holiday weekend as high pressure builds towards the region.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
1202 AM Update...
Quick update to account for the near term portion of the
forecast. Made minor adjustments to temperatures, dew points
and winds for the next few hours. Large CS deck will continue to
cross the forecast area tonight.
1055 PM Update... Another round of temperature
and sky edits to account for observed trends. A band of
stratocu is at this time overachieving a bit over the northern
mountains... so have warmed overnight temperatures there, while
continuing to cool especially in the sheltered valleys
elsewhere.
640 PM Update...Made just a few minor tweaks to the overnight
temperature forecast to pull observations in line with the next
several hours. Trended lows a bit closer to cooler MOS given
clear skies and upstream cirrus remaining high enough to
minimize impacts on radiational cooling.
Previously...High pressure tonight into Thursday to bring a
mostly clear, calm, and chilly night.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Clouds gradually increase Thursday with models in relatively
good agreement beginning cyclogenesis near the Great Lakes area
during this period. The latest model suite does hint at the
development of a secondary area of low pressure near the Mid
Atlantic region by late Thursday. This may allow for the cold
air to hold on across northern areas for a few more hours.
Expect some snow to develop most areas expected southeast NH and
the Coastal Plain. This will quickly go to rain except for the
mountains and foothills where 3-6 inches are possible overnight
Thursday night. Southeast winds increase as the night progresses
with advisory level winds possible late at night
southeasternmost zones/coast and western slopes of the White
Mountains.
Winds continue to increase as Friday progresses as rain becomes
heavy at times. Snow gradually goes over to rain in the
mountains except perhaps near the Canadian Border where we will
have to watch for higher snow amounts in the warm air gets
beaten back. Damaging winds are expected at times on the coastal
plain and the western slopes of the Whites. In between we are
less certain in wind speeds as inversions tend to be deeper up
against east slopes of the mountains and in the Merrimack
Valley. The high wind watch remains up for all zones for the
time being. Residents are urged to prepare in case power is
lost.
Front sweeps across the region by 00z Sat and will mark the end
of heavy rains and the worst winds. However, there may be a 1
or 2 hour period immediately in the wake of the front where
strong pressure rise/fall couplet aids in potentially brief
period of damaging winds. Otherwise, temperatures fall rapidly
in the wake of the front with rain changing to snow for an hour
or two before ending. Temperatures will drop very fast behind
the front with readings going from the 40s and 50s to the teens
and 20s in a matter of 2-3 hours. That's very impressive for
these parts. You normally see that in the Plains. Therefore,
with any road treatments washed off the roads, a flash freeze
will be possible.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Overview: Large, powerful storm system will lift northward
Friday night into Saturday. Lingering impacts with river
flooding and flash freeze will be the primary concerns. The rest
of the weekend will be breezy as high pressure slowly moves
north into early next week.
Details: Primary focus will be on continuing strong, gusty
winds shifting southwest Friday night and plummeting
temperatures by daybreak Saturday. This could result in slick
surfaces where damp surfaces or standing water remain from
heavy rain/snow melt Friday afternoon.
Low pressure continues to deepen and stall over the southern
Ontario/Quebec border. Potential triple point low will have
lifted north of the region, with a potent cold front sweeping
through the CWA west to east. Temperature meteograms show an
impressive drop in temps, some suggesting a 30 degree drop in
as quickly as a two hour span. This will be tricky to forecast
based on aforementioned low pressure development, but relatively
high confidence that it occurs Friday evening across NH and
after midnight for western ME.
The first half of Friday night should still be plenty windy,
potentially lasting behind the southwest wind shift for a few
hours. Cold air aloft will create continued low level
instability for high lapse rates after the jet and pressures
rise. The combination of wind/cold temps arrival will also
create a shocking turn around for wind chill. Folks wrapping up
their afternoon out and about Friday afternoon will experience
some raw wind chills in the mid 30s, but waking up for a early
Sat morning trip to town will be presented with wind chills
below zero.
The plummeting temps and relative proximity to recent heavy
rain/snow melt will bring slick conditions to the area as damp
surfaces and standing water flash freeze.
High pressure will move into the region early next week leading
to mostly calm conditions. This should result in temperatures
around normal with a slight warming trend towards the middle of
next week.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Short Term...VFR tonight and Thursday followed by MVFR then LIFR
as Thursday night progresses and lasts into Friday in wintry
precip, and then heavy rain. Southeast SFC winds will peak 40 to
50 kt Friday with LLWS likely.
Long Term...LLWS continues with an abrupt SW wind shift Friday
evening. Gusty winds 20-30 kts continue into Saturday and Sunday
with improving conditions from IFR to VFR.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Winds begin to increase out of the southeast on
Thursday, building to storms Friday with seas on 20+ feet likely
on the ocean waters by late Friday.
Long Term...Storm conditions should slacken to Gale Friday
night into Saturday. A SCA will likely be needed through Sunday
and into Monday afternoon with continuing gusty winds and slowly
decreasing wave heights. High pressure moves over the waters
for early next week through midweek.

.HYDROLOGY...
Overall footprint of heavy rainfall remains relatively
consistent with a swath of 2-3" from the White Mountains through
central Maine, locally higher in the upslope regions. A
favorable trend has been the inclusion of snow at the onset of
the event in the mountains which will aid in reducing the
magnitude of any later flooding. Another positive change is a
slight reduction of the melt window, where every hour can make a
big difference in the overall runoff. The extreme cold on the
backside of the system will likewise be favorable in that it
will shut down runoff as the freeze sets in.
The snow factor remains the biggest variable in this event. SWE
from the foothills into the mountains is running 2-3+ inches,
with cold temperatures and densities around 20-25%. The snow in
these areas will be significantly reduced from the heavy
rainfall and strong winds, but will hold with limited release of
liquid runoff. South of the foothills the snowpack is expected
to be harder hit with an almost complete melt out if the current
forecast conditions hold. This will add 0.5-1+" of liquid into
the waterways, and very rapidly Friday night. The rapid nature
of the snowmelt and heavy rain on frozen ground could lead to
rapid onset of flash flooding.
Rivers are currently running at or above normal with limited
storage capacity. One favorable component is a lack of notable
river ice. The rivers will respond with several projected to
reach flood stage or higher. Any river flooding will likely be
ongoing into the holiday weekend. Some tributaries to mainstem
rivers will be particularly vulnerable to flooding, some of
which could be locally significant.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Have opted to continue the Coastal Flood Watch for the threat
of coastal flooding along portions of the western Maine and New
Hampshire Friday morning. Storm force southeasterly winds will
hold water in areas such as the Backbay area of Hampton for a
few hours, so the watch has been issued to continue well past
high tide into the early afternoon hours.
There continues to be significant differences between the latest
ETSS and ESTOFS runs during the mid to late morning high tide
cycle, albeit the latest ESTOFS output has increased. This
forecast of course will be heavily tied to the timing of the
greatest winds, wave setup with some degree of contribution of
lowering pressure with time. Highest storm surge values look to
arrive after the time of high tide and later in the day topping
out near 4 feet.
Large, battering, long period waves will impact the Friday
night tide as well, albeit, astronomical tides will be lower for
that cycle.
