* IMPACTS...The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if
  precautions are not taken. The cold temperatures in the teens
  and 20s will lead to black ice conditions on area roadways as 
  well.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in
frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors, make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak front will drift in from the northwest tonight and stall
while extending from Georgia across the Carolinas through late
Thursday. Low pressure developing along the front is expected to
move across the Carolinas on Thursday and Thursday night, bringing
precipitation that could be wintry across the mountains and
foothills. Cold high pressure will build back in from the west and
north Friday and Saturday. Another cold front and low pressure
approaches on Sunday reaching the Carolina coast early Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1145 AM EST Wednesday: No significant changes needed this
update. Just blended the latest OBS into the forecast. Cloud cover
has been scattered out across the southern zones the last few hours
leading to mostly sunny skies. High clouds are now trickling into
the far northern zones from the west. Cloud cover is expected to
continue increasing across the northern zones while decreasing
across the southern zones this afternoon. May need to bump high
temps across the northern areas up in later updates if the cloud
cover continues to be slow to increase.

Meanwhile, remnant sfc high pressure will also weaken into the
afternoon as a weak cold front moves down from the NW. In spite of
that, weak warm advection this morning and further modification of
the leftover air mass should allow temps to climb back to normal
today. The pressure gradient between the cold front and sfc high
pressure will lead to low end wind gusts across the entire CWA into
late this afternoon. The weak front will move into the area this
evening with little to show for it. While guidance shows some low
level moisture banking up against the nrn mountains overnight, this
is not expected to result in any precip production along the TN
border at this time. Instead, it looks dry overall as forcing and
moisture associated with the next system should not arrive before
daybreak Thursday. Lows tonight should be within a few degrees of
normal.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 200 AM Wednesday: A stalled frontal boundary across Dixie
Alley and Southeast will have a surface low develop along the
front. The surface low is expected to eject into the Deep South
Thursday morning. Cyclogenesis will begin to take form as a potent
shortwave moves along the base of the broad long wave trough
settled over the eastern CONUS. The shortwave will surge across
the Central Plains Thursday and into the southern Appalachians
Thursday night. The surface low seems to continue its track
into the CFWA Thursday night, but the track has shifted slight
further south per deterministic models (along or south of I-85),
which would support more precip on the cold side of the stalled
boundary. Moisture profiles have upticked slightly as well, which
has made a slight change in our latest thinking, but still on
track from the previous forecast.

The overall confidence in precip-types are trending up as model
guidance has a slightly slower track in with the precipitation
associated with the surface low. The brunt of the precipitation
looks to occur Thursday evening into Thursday night. The onset may
begin as a mix bag between sleet and freezing rain, especially
near the Smokies and Nantahalas if the precip develops before
sunset. Profiles become rather cold Thursday night, which concurs
that snow will be the main precip-type and could become widespread
across the mountains. Mid-level forcing becomes adequate over
the mountains and could develop a modest deformation band across
the spine of the Appalachians over the CFWA as the main band of
precip moves across the area. Temperatures are rather cold, but
will remain above freezing across the piedmont, but wintry precip
could develop across the I-40 corridor, especially if the slower
trend continues and allows precipitation to linger across the CFWA
overnight Thursday. With moisture profiles being the main question
of this system, advisory level snow totals will continue to be in
the forecast for elevations above 3500' in the mountains. As the
surface low lifts to the northeast late Thursday night into Friday
morning, the pattern will likely shift to northwest flow event
across the TN border. In this case, Winter Storm level snow totals
could occur in the northwest facing slopes along the TN border, but
confidence is too low at this point in time to put in the forecast.

Stout CAA will develop behind the front Friday as the low
pressure system lifts and the leading edge of a strong continental
surface high encroaches the CFWA from the northwest. Gusty winds
will develop and is shown per model guidance with tight MSLP
gradients, especially over the mountains (~4 - 6 mb). Very cold
temperatures will be in store Friday morning with with 10s across
the mountains and 20s in the piedmont. Wind Chills will likely
approach advisory level criteria for the higher elevations. High
pressure will continue to control the forecast throughout the
day Friday and Friday night as it sets up shop over the central
Appalachians. Temperatures Friday will will be 5 to 10 degrees
below normal, while lows Friday night 6 to 12 degrees below normal.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 300 AM Wednesday: Dry continental surface high will control
the weather pattern Saturday as the surface high propagates eastward
offshore by Saturday night. The surface high develops a weak wedge
configuration over the CFWA in response to its location offshore
with WAA entering in the mid-levels and an upper trough building
in from the west. Increasing cloud cover and WAA filtering in
will help moderate temperatures to near normal values overnight
Saturday. Return flow shifts back into the region on Sunday,
ahead of the next cold front. Likely PoPs are in the forecast
with the main axis of precip along the boundary entering the CFWA
between Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. Broad upper troughing
and a post-frontal regime will commence going into the early part
of next week as a strong and dry cold high builds in behind the
fropa. The high will keep the area dry through the remainder
of the medium range as it slides over the East Coast by day
6-7. Temperatures will remain below normal for much of the period,
with the exception of Sunday and Sunday night due to extensive
cloudiness and precipitation in the forecast as temperatures run
near to slightly above normal.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Low clouds have scattered out across all
terminals this afternoon. Only high clouds are expected to be
present through the 18z TAF period, leading to VFR conditions for all
sites. The one exception is KCLT. Guidance has been trending towards
fog and low stratus near the KCLT terminal around daybreak Thursday.
Went with a TEMPO from 0800z to 1200z to account for the potential
development of fog and IFR CIGS. Confidence on low stratus and fog
development is low at this time. A moisture starved cold front
tracks across the area this evening, stalling along the central
Carolinas through the end of the period. Winds remain SW'ly ahead of
the front, turning NW'ly behind the front. Dry conditions are
expected to last through the 18z TAF period for most sites. With a
30 hour TAF period, KCLT gets a PROB30 for -RA as an area of low
pressure develops along the stalled frontal boundary increasing
precip chances. Winds throughout Thursday will gradually turn
southerly in response to the approaching low.

Outlook: A low pressure system will likely bring about restrictions
late Thursday into early Friday morning. High pressure returns
Friday into the weekend.
