.SYNOPSIS...
A strong winter storm will lift north of the region Monday morning,
giving way to dry and cold high pressure for the first part of
the workweek. By late Wednesday, the next cold front should sweep
across the area, before an increasingly unpredictable pattern sets
in for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 320 am Monday: A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect
through today for the NC counties bordering Tennessee, and for much
of the Piedmont and foothills through 7 AM. The latter is
exclusively for lingering travel difficulties, as precip has long
since ended, For the TN border counties, snow showers are in a bit
of a lull at this time, as earlier -SHSN w/in deformation zone have
lifted north of the forecast area. However, the latest water vapor
imagery indicates a rather potent speed max over the western Ohio
Valley and vicinity, and this is forecast to sweep across our
forecast area later this morning. In the wake of this feature, NW
flow will deepen as will moisture. This will allow snow showers to
redevelop in the upslope areas along the TN/NC border. Ingredients
(cold temps in a relatively deep moist layer, a bit of a Great Lakes
connection, and some synoptic scale support) will be favorable for
accumulating snow showers, albeit primarily in the higher elevations
along the TN border, although spotty areas in the lower elevations
could pick up an inch or two. Very gusty winds are already
developing across portions of the northern Blue Ridge, and these
gusty winds are only expected to become more widespread as the cold
advection regime matures throughout the morning, with 50+ kt H8
winds expected by 12Z or so. Advisory-level winds are already
mentioned in the WSW for the TN border counties, but a Wind Advisory
will be needed for zones along the eastern Blue Ridge escarpment
that will see their WSW expire at 700 AM. The very gusty winds will
support at least patchy blowing snow.
Elsewhere, clearing skies and warming temps should allow for some
decent melting to begin by noon-ish, although max temps today will
still be a good 10 degrees below climo. Very cold conditions tonight
will allow for widespread refreezing, and an SPS for black ice will
be needed for all zones east of the TN border counties after 7 AM.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 250 AM EST Monday: Any lingering NW flow snow will cease
after sunrise Tuesday as dry air penetrates the mountain valleys.
Broad flat ridging will be in store for Tuesday and the first part
of Wednesday, prompting anomalously low thicknesses and continuing
the cold trend through midweek. Deterministic guidance is fairly
consistent in depicting a southern stream shortwave firing up over
the Four Corners and drifting over the southern Great Plains on
Wednesday, and beginning to lift along a deeper trough over Ontario
Wednesday night into Tuesday morning. The result is potent DPVA
forcing, arriving from 00-06Z Thursday and ramping up through the
remainder of the period. An attendant cold front then arrives on
Thursday morning, such that precip will be in store from perhaps
06Z Thursday through 18Z.
For now, Wednesday afternoon's 850mb flow looks gusty, but not
extreme: it generally peaks in the 35-40kt range, and with profiles
that don't look all that conducive to mixing, the likely scenario
now seems to be sporadic low-end gusts across the Piedmont, with
more consistent ridgetop gusts in the mountains.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 305 AM EST Monday: Models continue to waffle back and forth in
their handling of a lateweek cyclone. By Friday, it appears that
the midweek cold front will stall out south and east of the CWA.
Heights barely have a chance to rebound on Friday before a new
trough starts digging out of the Midwest and amplifying over the
Tennessee Valley Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, a separate trough
pivots out of northwestern Mexico, but is poorly handled by models.
Where the last few runs of the GFS and the 12Z ECMWF are slower
and depict a less active southern stream overall, the 00Z runs
of the CMC and ECMWF both depict a more potent trough moving east
faster and interacting with the northern stream disturbance such
that a deep coastal low spins up along the remnant frontal boundary
on Friday.
The slower, less active solutions result in a mostly dry or all-rain
forecast for the whole region, while the more progressive solution
tends toward another round of winter precipitation. A cursory look
at ensemble data suggests a lot of uncertainty still: the GEFS
members are more or less evenly split between the dry, all-rain,
and wintery solutions, while the GEM strongly favors a non-dry
solution, but depicts so much spread in the positioning of the
coastal low that there's no consistency on p-type. So, for now,
have held temps below normal in keeping with previous forecast
packages, and have used a blend of NBM PoPs and the slight/chance
PoPs used by prior forecast packages.

.AVIATION /09Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Lingering IFR cigs at KGMU/KGSP/KCLT are
expected to scatter/lift over the next 1-3 hours. Brief -SN/flurries
will also remain possible at KAVL over the next 1-2 hours, which
could lower cigs/visby. VFR conditions are otherwise expected at all
sites by 09/10Z. Gusty winds will develop from the NW at KAVL and
the W/SW at all other sites between 06 and 09Z. Gusts will generally
be 25-30 kts at KAVL and around 20 kts at all other sites. Skies
will otherwise gradually clear through the morning, with mostly SKC
conditions expected through the end of the period.
Outlook: High pressure builds in on Tuesday, before another cold
front pushes through late Wednesday into early Thursday with precip
and associated restrictions. Cold high pressure builds back into the
area later Thursday.
