.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure will lead to continued dry conditions through
late Wednesday. Southerly wind will increase late Wednesday becoming
breezy to windy into Wednesday night.  A cold front will cross the
area overnight Wednesday into Thursday with widespread rain ahead of
the front then wind shifting to the west behind the front and
continued breezy through Thursday afternoon. Dry weather returns
Thursday night into the first part of the weekend before a low
pressure system moving along the Gulf Coast potentially brings more
rain to the area.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Slow warming continues as periods of mid and upper clouds hamper
insol to offset and modify a cP airmass mix. Max temps still look
good in the m50s north and mtn valleys and l60s across the far
southern zones.

As the evening progresses an upper level ridge axis will continue to
advance toward the FA and shunt a sfc high off shore. The models are
in good agreement with a back-building sfc wedge maintained over the
nrn zones overnight and thru most of the Wed period. Meanwhile, a
moist llvl return flow will bring low clouds to the srn zones arnd
daybreak with some enhanced lifting along the wedge near I-77 for a
chance of -dz and possibly spotty light rain persisting into the
early afternoon.

The upper ridge axis continues eastward Wed afternoon and the flow
aloft becomes more difl ahead of an approaching frontal system.
Associated height falls will allow a wrn sfc low to deepen and
become stronger, which will tighten the p/grad across the NC mtns.
Also, h85 winds increase to arnd 50 kts by the end of the period
with vertical mixing making for advisory criteria winds realized at
the sfc by arnd 19z. The stronger winds will occur abv 3.5 Kft, yet
with the ongoing wild fires in Swain Co will keep the wind advisory
county-wide except for Buncombe and Transylvania counties. Min temps
tonight will be arnd normal south and a few degrees below normal
over the nrn Piedmont. With the wedge holding and deep morning
moisture, max temps will also favor warmer than normal temps south
and below normal levels north.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 230 pm EDT Tuesday: A strong upper ridge axis over the East at
the start of the period will migrate off the eastern seaboard
Wednesday night. The upstream trough axis over the Midwest and
Plains will slowly move east as well, with the eastward movement
slowed by several rounds of shortwave energy reinforcing the main
longwave trough axis Wednesday night through Thursday. An associated
cold front will move across the Mid South Wednesday night and then
cross the southern Appalachians and surrounding areas through
Thursday. The deep-layer moisture ahead of the main frontal boundary
will be fairly narrow, with the best rainfall chances ramping up
after 06Z Thursday and probably exiting the eastern zones around 18Z
Thu. The primary concern ahead of the front will be a robust,
southerly low-level jet of 60+ kt crossing the mountains Wed night
into Thursday morning. A Wind Advisory will be posted for this
system for much of the NC mountains, with some damaging gusts quite
possible at elevations above about 4500 feet. The bulk of the
precipitation will come through when instability is low. However,
overnight and Thu. morning deep-layer shear of nearly 70 kt will
require close monitoring of any convective elements. The greatest
instability may be right along and ahead of the passing front east
of the mountains Thu afternoon, when perhaps 500-1000 J/kg of sbCAPE
could be realized. Shear should lessen from the west, however,
during the most unstable period. Finally, brief heavy rainfall may
pose a maginal hydro threat across the region, especially in the
southern mountain upslope areas. A Flood Watch does not appear
warranted at present.

Lingering westerly flow upslope showers may persist along the spine
of the mountains into Thursday night, but with drying developing as
high pressure builds over into the region through Friday behind the
departing front. Despite the fropa, westerly downsloping will keep
max temps above climo east of the mountains on Friday afternoon.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 230 pm EDT Tuesday: A clipper system will brush the northern
tier of the forecast area on Saturday. Slightly deeper moisture will
briefly impact western NC Saturday afternoon, with southern tier
sections becoming just unstable enough for a few showers. Following
the wave passage, fairly zonal flow will return over most of the
CONUS for the latter half of the weekend, with dry high pressure
building over the east Sunday into Monday. A prominent wave will
carve out east of the Rockies Monday night. This wave will acquire a
sharp negative tilt, sweep east across the MS River Valley, and lift
toward the base of the Southern Appalachians. Late Tuesday could
thus be the next chance for appreciable heavy rainfall and strong to
severe thunderstorms returning to the region. Temperatures will
return to above climo values through the period.

.AVIATION /19Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Mid and upper clouds with light winds will
prevail thru the first half of the TAF period. With hipres broadening
out this afternoon and overnight, directions will be hard to pin
down, but for now will favor a synoptic se/ly to to s/ly flow. A
moist return flow will develop overnight and by daybreak llvl StCu
will move in and drop CIGs into MVFR across the non/mtn sites with
drops to IFR with -DZ looking more likely near KCLT thru noon. Flight
restrictions persist thru the TAF period, with KAVL remaining  VFR.
While at KCLT, the afternoon period should see improving conds with
low-end s/ly gusts developing.

Outlook: A cold front brings the potential for convection and
associated restrictions Wed night into Thursday, with clearing and
VFR conditions returning Friday and continuing into Saturday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A Fire Danger Statement remains in effect for much of northeast GA
and Upstate SC until 8 pm this evening. Relative humidity values
will rebound tomorrow, with minimum RH mostly in the 40s late day
Wednesday under southerly flow. Breezy conditions will redevelop
from the west during the afternoon, with windy conditions late, but
light showers may also start to break out in the affected southern
mountains at that point, so it is presently unclear if any
additional Fire Danger products will be needed going forward. This
will be closely monitored.
