.SYNOPSIS...
A series of upper level disturbances will cross the area over the
weekend. This will reinforce unseasonably cool temperatures and
bring a chance of light snow to the higher elevations of the North
Carolina mountains tonight into Saturday. A warming trend begins on
Monday with above normal temperatures expected for the rest of the
work week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 200 PM EDT Friday: A vigorous short wave will dive into
the Ohio Valley tonight, and cross the Central Appalachians and
Mid-Atlantic Saturday, carving out the longwave trough across the
region. A tight pressure gradient will set up atop the forecast
area, and combined with deep mixing, will result in gusty westerly
winds starting in the mountains around daybreak and the rest of
the area by late morning. Elevations above 3500 ft will almost
certainly see gusts in the 40-50 mph range during the aftn,
while the valleys are more 30-40 mph. Still, think it prudent
to issue a Wind Advisory for all our mountains zones for 6 am
to 8 pm Saturday. The advisory may need to be expanded into the
Piedmont, as some guidance hints of gusts approaching 40+ mph,
but for now, it looks like the Piedmont should stay below advisory
criteria. Dewpts will mix out quite readily, and will combine with
the gusty winds and drying fuels to cause increased fire danger
(see Fire Wx section below). Before things really dry out, there
will be a period of low-level moisture banking up against the west
slopes of the Southern Appalachians tonight, with the CAMs in good
agreement on the flow wringing out a few upslope rain/snow showers
overnight. Light snow accums of generally an inch or less expected
above about 4500 ft. Temps will a couple deg below normal tonight,
and stay about 5 to 10 deg below normal for highs Saturday with
strong low-level CAA.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 115 PM EDT Friday...An ulvl trof swings northeast of the FA to
begin the period with waves of upper energy traversing NW flow Sun
thru Mon. This will usher in another round of llvl CAA across the NC
mtns as the column remains dry thru a deep layer. Some mlvl clouds
will be possible as a moist wave approaches Sun night and the fcst
will remain dry as far as QPF. However, the GFS is sticking to an
idea of lifting enhancement across the srn periphery of an building
sfc high leading to -shra across NE GA and the wrn Upstate. This is
not realized on the other op models so confidence is quite low on
this possibility. Cold nights each morning along with decoupled
winds will make frost formation possible while mins fall below
freezing across the nrn half of the FA. Max temps will rebound
nicely with increased downslope flow, yet still remain a little
below normal Sun and arnd normal for Mon. With the downsloping flow,
sfc td/s will also drop and make for continued fire-wx concerns
Sun/Mon, yet winds will not be as gusty as what is expected for Sat.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 145 PM EDT Friday...Very little change in the thinking over
the ext range. Still anticipate a strong ulvl ridge axis to cross
the area Thru Wed leading to warming temps well abv normal. The llvl
flow becomes more sw/ly as a sfc high builds east of the area, which
shud raise sfc td/s enuf to offset continued fire-wx concerns.
However, afternoon mixing will be deep due to the higher temps, so
drier air aloft may keep RH values close to fire danger criteria. By
Wed night, a stg upper level low is progged to dive down across the
Midwest and swing a frontal system toward the area. The main LR
models are in better agreement with the evolution of the low, yet
the slower CMC does keep an open wave and not closing off a low
until Fri. This is considered an outlier at this point and will
maintain the active cold front idea to end the period. This system
will be quite dynamic and the pre/frontal airmass looks to have a
good amt of time to destabilize as waves of energy traverse from the
SW by mid afternoon. Bulk shear values will also increase into the
50-60 kt range so a mid-chance of organized/strong convection
remains plausible.

.AVIATION /19Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Gusty SW to WSW winds this aftn with plenty
stratocu with bases 5000-8000 ft across the area. Clouds will
thin out and winds become lighter this evening, losing their
gusts, except continuing at KAVL. Flow will veer to more NWLY
across the mountains, with a period of rain/snow shower activity
expected mainly after midnight to daybreak Saturday. East of the
mountains should see skies clearing out. Gusty WSW to WNW winds
expected everywhere by around 14-15z, with gust potential to 30
kt or higher in the aftn.

Outlook: Breezy conditions expected again across the area Sunday,
but not as strong as Saturday. Dry and VFR conditions are expected
to continue into early next week.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Coincident with the passage of a reinforcing cold front, a
tightening pressure gradient and llvl caa is expected to aide in the
development of gusty westerly winds on Saturday. Dry brush in
combination with RH values dropping below 25 percent, increased fire
danger is likely. A fire weather watch is in effect for Northeast
Georgia and South Carolina. A fire danger statement is also in
effect for North Carolina.
