The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued
a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is
in effect from 10 AM this morning to 8 PM EDT this evening.

  Elbert, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Graham, Jackson and Macon
  Counties.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level trough that has brought our region the cooler
temperatures this weekend will slowly move east over the Atlantic
going into the first half of the week.  An upper level ridge will
become dominant into mid week as the next cold front approaches from
the west.  Expect warmer temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday.
Widespread rain is expected ahead of the cold front on
Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 150 PM Saturday: Very gusty winds will continue into the early
evening then slowly diminish. Stratocu will remain across the
mountains with some spilling out across the foothills and Piedmont.

A secondary short wave moves through the northwesterly flow aloft
and across the area tonight. This helps bring a reinforcing surge of
CAA along with some low level moisture to the mountains. This will
also help keep the atmosphere mixed, at least through midnight.
Looks to be a period of gap winds downstream of the Blue Ridge as
well. Will extend the Wind Advisory through midnight to cover the
continued gusty winds. Expect clouds to continue or even increase
this evening over the mountains. However, don't expect more than
just some flurries across the higher elevations as the moisture
isn't very deep and guidance favors any significant snow showers
staying to our north. Some of these clouds will continue to spill
out across the foothills and Piedmont overnight as well. Most
locations outside of the mountains look to lose their gusts toward
morning, but still not a good radiational cooling night. Lows look
to be around 10 degrees below normal with the reinforcing cold
advection taking place.

The short wave moves east of the area Sunday but heights show little
movement in the continued northwest flow. Mixing won't be as deep as
today and the overall wind speeds drop off. However, mixing will be
deep enough and speeds high enough for low end gusts to return for
the afternoon, slightly stronger gusts across the mountains. Highs
will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal with no significant change in
thickness values. The atmosphere remains very dry and with gusts
returning fire weather concerns continue. See the fire weather
discussion for details.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 230 PM EDT Saturday...Eastern CONUS trough will linger
into Monday, as an upper ridge into the Midwest. This will keep
a low-level NWLY flow across the forecast area. The downslope
flow east of the mountains will help mix dewpts out and this
will be accompanied by maybe some low-end gusts. So it wouldn't
be surprising if there are some lingering fire wx concerns
Monday aftn, but at least conditions will be well below Red Flag
criteria. Otherwise, cold advection should keep temps a little below
normal in the mountains and near to slightly below normal east.

Monday night into Tuesday, a warm front will activate across the
area, oriented from NW to SE across the TN Valley to GA. This
frontal zone will lift north thru the area, and should bring an
increase in cloudiness, but a lack of deep moisture should keep
PoPs below 15%. Cannot rule out a few sprinkles or light rain in
the Northern Mountains of NC. Temps bottom out near normal, then
range from slightly below normal NE to a category or two above
normal SW. A moist southerly flow should finally put an end to
this string of elevated fire danger days Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 130 PM EDT Saturday...Upper level ridge will amplify over the
region Wednesday, while a deep trough closes off into a large upper
low over the Upper Midwest. The building heights over the forecast
area will result in temps well above normal, approaching upper
70s to near 80 in the Piedmont. A spoke of vorticity will rotate
NE around the upper low and across our area late Wednesday night
thru Thursday. This will be associated with a cold front and strong
low-level jet. The medium range guidance have some disagreements
on the exact timing of the fropa, but all do show at least some
sbCAPE with it. So will keep at least a slight chc of Thunder
mention for Thursday. This front looks moderately forced and shear
will be more than adequate for severe storm potential. Currently,
there's a Day 6 slight risk area just clipping our eastern zones
into central NC. This may expand further west into our area,
if models trend a little slower with the front and more unstable.

Behind the front, modest high pressure builds into the region for
Friday, as upper flow flattens out across the CONUS. There will be a
potential shortwave and some moisture return heading into Saturday,
but models are not in good agreement. Temps will be slightly cooler,
but still above normal.

.AVIATION /19Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Winds continue to be the issue with a strong
cross wind component at the non-mountain sites and an unusual slight
cross wind component at KAVL. These very gusty winds will continue
through the afternoon then diminish slightly during the evening as
they turn more northwesterly. Gusts should drop off all locations but
KAVL by daybreak with a general northwesterly direction. Gusty winds
pick back up by noon, but not as strong as today. VFR stratocu will
continue across the mountains this afternoon and evening, with some
spilling out across the foothills and Piedmont. SKC expected for the
bulk of the day Sunday.

Outlook: Dry and VFR conditions are expected to continue into the
middle of next week.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The Red Flag Warning will remain in place through expiration with
the very gusty winds and very dry air mass in place. Wind speeds and
gusts will not be as strong on Sunday as mixing is not as deep and
overall atmospheric winds are lower. However, winds will become
gusty again by afternoon as mixing begins. With the dry air mass in
place, RH values will again fall below 25 percent. A Fire Danger
Statement will be issued for Sunday for NE GA and the Upstate when
the current Warning expires. Coordination with NC land managers will
be needed for any products there as conditions will be similar.
