.SYNOPSIS...
Precipitation will gradually pull away from the area this morning
with a lull before the arrival of a strong arctic cold front
tonight. Light freezing rain through daybreak may also result in a
light glaze of ice along the escarpment and higher terrain. A band
of precipitation associated with the arctic front will sweep through
the area tonight with rain changing over to a brief period of snow
across the mountains and foothills along/north of I-40. Dangerously
cold air will quickly spill into the area by Friday morning with
gusty winds and subzero wind chills. Temperatures will gradually
warm late this weekend into next week with dry weather continuing.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Noon Update...The fcst is in decent shape thru the next update.
Temps are running a little warmer across the Upstate due to thinner
clouds and have made localized adj/s. Will hoist a High Wind Warning
across the nrn NC mtns in effect 08Z-23Z Fri as the guidance
continues a more dynamical trend with incoming arctic front
overnight.

Shortwave associated with current round of precipitation with a
surface low and warm front just to our southeast moves off to the
northeast today and is quickly followed by a major arctic front
which reaches the western edge of the GSP CWA after dark tonight.
This front quickly marches through the CWA and is followed by a
rapid and marked drop in temperatures and dewpoints, and comes with
considerable wind and some chances for precipitation of various
kinds.  This very strong longwave trough looks to bring in extensive
cold air that will be the coldest air this area has seen in 4 years,
at least.  Initial precipitation ahead of the front will be mostly
in the form of rain with some snow possible at higher elevations.
QPF amounts are light at a trace to a couple tenths of an inch.  As
the front passes, drop in temperatures would be expected to mark a
rapid change from rain to snow, but the frontal passage also drys
things out quickly, so any snow post front will be minimal and short
lived. Any mixed precipitation along the front will also be short-
lived, if not non-existent, as things transition rapidly to snow and
no precipitation.

FROPA is accompanied by stiff 65kts of 850mb wind, enough for a wind
advisory at the surface, and more than enough for wind chill
products. The area, thus sports wind as well as wind chill products
for Friday and Saturday.  With stronger winds at higher elevations,
a wind chill warning for elevations above 3000 ft is in effect for
early Friday morning through Saturday morning. Area will experience
unusually cold wind chill with a risk of frost bite or hypothermia
to anyone out of doors without proper clothing.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 330 AM Thursday: A powerful storm system will be impacting a
large portion of the country at the start of the short term period
tomorrow morning. A large negatively tilted trough is forecast to
extend from the Northern Plains to the Atlantic coast with a
deepening surface low across the Great Lakes into Canada. Farther
west, a 1050mb high will be centered over the Northern Plains with a
brutally cold arctic airmass spilling into the region behind the
passage of an arctic cold front. A few isolated northwest flow snow
showers may linger along the northern Tennessee border counties for
an hour or two Friday morning, but moisture will quickly get scoured
out. High temperatures on Friday will occur in the morning with
temperatures either falling or remaining steady through the day as
strong cold advection brings in 850mb temperatures of -15 to -22 C.
As is typical for cold arctic airmasses, the national model blend is
currently running too slow and warm with the front across the Great
Plains. Higher resolution models, such as the HRRR, have a better
handle on the timing and magnitude of cold air, so leaned the
forecast more towards a blend of the short term and raw guidance.
The result is temperatures remaining in the single digits across
much of the mountains with subzero readings in the higher
elevations. Upper teens will be common along and north of the I-40
corridor with low 20s elsewhere. Heading into Friday night,
temperatures will plummet with single digits common along and north
of I-85 and near single digits across the lower Piedmont. For the
mountains, lows will range from near 0 to -10 across the higher
elevations with even colder readings not out of the question across
the very highest peaks and ridges.

Winds will also be quite gusty, especially across the higher
elevations of the mountains above 3,500 ft. Wind chills Friday
through Saturday morning will range from near 0 to -10 outside of
the mountains with -10 to -20 common across the mountains.
Elevations above 3,000 ft will likely see wind chills fall below -20
with values near -30 possible at the highest peaks. With all of that
being said, a number of hazards have been hoisted this morning. A
wind advisory for elevations above 3,500 ft, a wind chill warning
for elevations above 3,000 ft and a wind chill advisory everywhere
else. Temperatures will "warm" slightly on Saturday, but the entire
area will likely remain below freezing with single digits continuing
across the high terrain. Saturday night will once again be quite
cold, but single digit lows should remain confined to the mountains.
While wind gusts will gradually weaken, another wind chill advisory
may be needed for the mountains Saturday night. The aforementioned
temperatures, wind chills and prolonged cold will be dangerous. Now
is the time to make preparations to protect people, pets and pipes.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 4AM Thursday: A gradual warming trend will begin on Sunday and
continue into next week with dry weather continuing. The large
occluded low will lift northeast into eastern Canada with the core
of cold arctic air also shifting away from the area. This will bring
an end to cold advection with the airmass beginning to modify. A
perturbed northern stream will send a series of shortwave clippers
through the region early to mid week, but each of these waves will
be moisture starved in the dry antecedent airmass with the only
noticeable weather being an increase in cloud cover. Temperatures
will remain below average through much of the period, but are
progged to return to seasonal averages by mid to late week as
ridging amplifies along the East Coast in response to an intense
Pacific jet carving out a deep trough as it dives into the Great
Basin. This will eventually be our next weather maker, but falls
outside of the current forecast period.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: A messy TAF set in store. First off, low CIGs
in the IFR/LIFR range will persist this afternoon into the overnight
period, possibly dropping into the VLIFR range for a few hours aft
03z outside the mtns. Low flight conds will continue across most
sites toward daybreak with periods of rain across the non/mtns and
snow and/or rain at KAVL and KHKY. Winds begin to increase sigfnt/ly
with an arctic airmass pushing in from the west aft 06Z and mod/high
end gusts will develop persisting thru the TAF period, A stg upper
jet also traverses the area and winds at 2 Kft will reach 50+ kts
generally between 06z and 10z creating a LLWS hazard during this
time. Wind directions will generally veer sw/ly to wnw/ly outside
the mtns and shift from s/ly to nw/ly at KAVL arnd 09z.

Outlook: Dry and very cold air will arrive behind the arctic cold
front early Friday morning which will last through Monday at least.
Gusty winds will begin tapering Friday night.

A very cold arctic airmass will invade the area following a strong
frontal passage Friday morning. Saturday will be the coldest day,
with well below normal cold air remaining in place through at
least Monday. Friday and Saturday morning behind the front will
also be very windy, with an unusually high risk from wind chill
impacts, including frost bite and hypothermia.

The cold weather will result in high demand for electricity across
the region. Power outages may result from the heavy electrical
load. Those who require electricity for heating or medical
equipment should consider backup heat or electrical sources.

Take steps now to protect your property and health from the
extreme cold. If you go outside, wear several layers of loose
fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy
clothing. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Wear a hat and cover
your mouth with a scarf. If driving, keep your gas tank near full
to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines. Check your antifreeze and
windshield washer fluid levels. Be sure to carry a fully charged
cell phone.

If you are home, consider allowing indoor plumbing fixtures to
drip to allow water to trickle through pipes and inhibit freezing.
Use caution with space heaters in order to avoid fire or injury.
If emergency generators will be used, they must be situated
outdoors in well-ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide
poisoning. Also, remember to check in on family, friends, and
elderly neighbors who might be susceptible to the cold. Do not
forget about your pets and livestock. Make sure they have a source
of water that will not freeze and a warm place to take shelter
from the wind and cold.

Do not attempt to walk on frozen ponds, lakes, or streams, as the
ice will not be thick enough to support the weight, even of a
child.

A cold wave is defined as average daily temperatures 12 degrees or
more below normal mid-January average daily temperatures for 48
hours or longer. Normal mid-January average daily temperatures
are, for Asheville 37, Charlotte 41, and GSP 42. By definition it
follows that a cold wave is when the average daily temperature for
Asheville is 25, Charlotte is 29, and GSP is 30; or less.
