* At 353 PM EDT, dam operators report floodgates opening leading to 
  a high flow event at Mathis Dam. Parts of Shady Lane and Mathis 
  Dam Road will flood and Joy Road Bridge will likely be closed.

  HAZARD...Flash flooding from a dam floodgate release.

  SOURCE...Dam operator.

  IMPACT...Flooding of areas along the river immediately
           downstream of the dam.

* Some locations that may experience flash flooding include...
  Tallulah Falls, Lakemont, Lake Rabun and Tallulah Gorge State Park.

If you are in low lying areas below the Mathis Dam you should move

.SYNOPSIS...
Showers associated with a cold front crossing the Carolinas will
continue through the first part of today before high pressure
dominates this weekend through the middle of next week. Beginning
Tuesday, a low chance of afternoon and evening showers will be
possible again, but with minimal severe risk.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1000 AM EDT: No significant changes needed to the forecast
this morning as it remains mostly in track. Did make a few tweaks to
cloud cover and PoPs based on the latest radar and satellite loops.
The convective line has pushed east of our CWA. However, we have a
few isolated to scattered showers ongoing across the extreme SW NC
mtns and the extreme SE zones.

Otherwise, abundant low-level moisture east of a cold front crossing
eastern Tennessee will persist. As the boundary crosses the region
today, expect isolated to scattered thunderstorms to redevelop along
or just ahead of the front. Instability should be fairly modest, but
cannot rule out a strong thunderstorm east of I-77 this afternoon as
heating redevelops. Given the additional shower coverage along the
passing front, and the ongoing flooding, the Flash Flood Watch will
be maintained for now.

The front will move east of the region by evening and drier high
pressure will approach from the west. Profiles will dry out in the
NW to N post fropa flow aloft, but low-level moisture will likely
return to the Tennessee border area of the western NC mountains
tonight on W to NW flow. Mins will return to near climo and
comfortable values tonight.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 215 AM EDT Friday: By Saturday morning, guidance places
the deteriorating upper low somewhere across the PA/VA border.
Heights across the Carolinas are on the rise by this point, as
a positively-tilted ridge begins to build over the Ohio Valley.
Through the course of the weekend, this ridge broadens and
drifts east, becoming well-established over the eastern CONUS
through Sunday.  Some guidance depicts a closed Z500 high over
the Appalachians by this point, which may help to explain why
the ridge essentially stalls by Sunday night.  At the surface,
dry pressure slides across the forecast area through the weekend.
The latest guidance keeps it moving fast enough that by late Sunday,
its center is well east of the western Carolinas, allowing a shallow
onshore moisture flux to set up and moisten profiles.  Fairly anemic
lapse rates Sunday afternoon should prevent convection, although
a few ensemble members depict shallow convection, perhaps deep
enough for an isolated light shower or two to develop south of
I-85 Sunday evening.  Confidence on such an outcome is very low.

Near-normal temperatures on Saturday afternoon will be bolstered by
rapidly increasing thickness values through the period and robust
daytime insolation on Sunday, allowing temperatures to creep at
least a category above normal on Sunday.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 230 AM EDT Friday: The synoptic pattern remains stagnant
through most of the extended forecast period.  With high pressure
now centered well east of the Atlantic coast, a persistent
and gradually deepening moisture flux off the Atlantic will
continue through Monday and Tuesday.  On Monday, the upper ridge
axis will set up more or less across the CWA, providing enough
deep-layer subsidence that anything more than isolated to scattered
fair-weather cumulus looks unlikely; on Tuesday and Wednesday,
however, as the ridge axis nudges eastward, several guidance sources
indicate that the deepening moisture will allow for isolated diurnal
convection and mechanically-driven showers over the NC mountains.
Thursday, a few global models depict the arrival of a closed
low off the FL/GA coast, which paired with falling heights aloft
may herald more active weather at the end of the week.  There is
significant disagreement among deterministic sources at this point,
and wide ensemble spread, however, so confidence is low on any
particular outcome.

.AVIATION /14Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: An approaching cold front remains west of the
Appalachians this morning, with persistent low-level moisture over
the terminal forecast area. TEMPO IFR cigs will be possible in some
locations through mid-morning, but with mainly MVFR cigs overall
before they lift to VFR this afternoon. With precipitation and
thunderstorm chances fairly small with the passing front today, most
locations will just get a VCSH forecast. Will PROB30 late day
showers with the fropa at HKY. Anticipate S to SW surface winds to
begin gusting with mixing today. Winds will slowly toggle more SW
then WSW, with a shift to NW with the fropa by tonight. Profiles
continue to dry out through the latter part of the TAF period with
high pressure pushing in from the west.

Outlook: In the wake of the cold front, VFR conditions should return
for the weekend and early next week as high pressure builds over the
region.

miles north of Winnsboro, or 7 miles southeast of Blackstock, moving
northeast at 35 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail.

At 528 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms with torrential
rainfall along a line extending from 5 miles southeast of Statesville
to 6 miles southeast of Rock Hill, and moving northeast at 20 mph.

Locations to be impacted include...
Uptown Charlotte, Huntersville, Kannapolis, Downtown Concord,
Salisbury, Statesville, Monroe, Rock Hill, Central Charlotte and
South Charlotte.

Very heavy rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour will be possible in
these areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

The combination of gusty winds and heavy rain may cause scattered
trees and power lines to fall. Seek shelter inside an interior room.

Torrential rainfall may flood areas with poor drainage, such as
ditches and underpasses. Avoid these areas and do not cross flooded
roads. Water levels of small streams may also rise rapidly. Seek
higher ground if threatened by flood waters.
