.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 536 AM CST Sat Dec 24 2022

Heavy snow showers in the Lake Superior Snowbelt today. Elsewhere,
still windy and cold with blowing and drifting snow, especially
in open areas. A chance for snow Christmas night, then warmer
next week.

The mid-latitude upper flow across NOAM consisted of a rather
broad ridge out west and an eastern trough comprised of the deep
vortex that wrapped up out of the intense cyclone that brought the
winter storm conditions to the area the past couple days. The
trough will linger for a few days before weakening. That will
allow the westerlies across the CONUS to trend toward a southern-
stream dominated split flow regime during the final days of 2022.

Cold conditions will persist through Monday, then temperatures
will quickly warm to above normal. Once in place, the milder
weather will probably be around for a little while. Precipitation
for the period will depend primarily on what occurs with a
southern stream cyclone late in the period. Given that the limited
opportunity for substantial precipitation and the uncertainty in
the track of the system so far out, the best estimate is for AOB
normal amounts.

.SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Sunday

Land-based headlines were left unchanged with the morning
forecast issuance.

Winds were not quite as strong as anticipated yesterday. That was
probably due to slightly weaker winds above the surface than
originally forecast, and colder surface temperatures which
resulted in a bit more stability from the boundary layer up into
the low-levels of the free atmosphere. But a strong surface
pressure gradient will remain across the area today, and 850 mb
winds of 45-55 kts will be overhead all day. Although some of the
loose snow has probably settled into drifts, feel the winds will
still be sufficient to generate enough blowing and drifting snow
for open areas to experience a significant reduction in
visibility, and to warrant keeping the WW.Y in effect today. In
addition, roads have a tendency to ice over after being plowed
when drifting snow brings a thin layer of fresh snow over the
pavement which gets packed down by passing vehicles.

Wind chills were currently meeting advisory criteria (<= -20) over
about the WSW 1/3 of the forecast area. That should continue into
early afternoon and will wrap that hazard into the ongoing WW.Y.
After a short respite, wind chills will head back down this
evening. The latest forecast calls for wind chills of -20 to -25
over central WI from mid-evening through mid-morning Sunday. A
large area farther N and E has the WCI bottom out around -20, with
less harsh conditions in the far NE and lakeshore areas. So we
will likely need a WC.Y for at least central WI. But there is a
lot of uncertainty over exactly how much of the rest of the area
it will need to cover. Given that, and the ongoing headline for
the blowing and drifting snow, opted to forego issuing the WC.Y
with the morning issuance. This will also help keep the focus on
the hazardous travel conditions in open areas today, and allow the
next shift the benefit of basing the headline on updated
temperature and wind forecasts.

The other short-term issue is actually much more significant. Very
impressive lake-effect snows continue in Vilas county. KD25 has
been AOB 1/2SM most of the night, though some of that was likely
due to blowing snow. Still, obs from the 4 METAR sites in Vilas
county suggest travel must be very difficult in that area. Air
parcel trajectories and thermodynamics will remain favorable for
LES through tonight and possibly into Sunday. But the inversion
height will gradually lower, and that should be what finally
results in a decrease in the SHSN. Running the WS.W through 00Z
looked good. Might need something after that, but perhaps a WW.Y
might be sufficient. Again, the next shift will be a much better
position to make that decision.

.LONG TERM...Sunday Night Through Friday

The main story for the long term portion of the forecast will be
the transitions from bitter cold Monday and Tuesday with
temperatures climbing well above normal levels for the latter
half of next week. Some locations could actually warm into the
40s!

The clipper system that was advertised to pass well south of the
area Sunday night has shifted to the north on the model
runs tonight. Have trended toward the ECMWF/Canadian model
solution as the GFS trended even further north. Snow chances
were increased moderately for now since the models could shift
the system south on upcoming model runs. Currently have less
than inch of accumulation based on the ECMWF/Canadian model
solution across central and east-central Wisconsin.

The cold will continue Monday and Tuesday. A warm front will
lift northward across the area Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Precipitation is expected to break out north of the front. Models
have depicted much of the precipitation north of the forecast
area, with only slight chances of precipitation across our
northern counties. Will need to monitor to see if the models
trend southward on the precipitation.

The mild weather is expected to continue Wednesday into the next
weekend. There are many concerns in the Thursday and Friday period
including precipitation types, the potential for fog, and how
mild it can be. For precipitation types, the GFS bufkit is
indicating a warm layer aloft which could cause the precipitation
to be in the form of rain, drizzle, freezing rain or freezing
drizzle or possibly some sleet at times. The cold ground may
be a factor for icing until the ground temperatures warm above
freezing. Also, numerical guidance on both the GFS and ECMWF
indicating dewpoints rising into the 30s Thursday into the
weekend. The combination of the snow pack, cold ground
temperatures, and rising dew points would suggest fog will be
possible at times during this period. It will probably be dense
at times that could impact travel before New Years Day. Lastly,
with a strong inversion present and the potential for fog and low
clouds around, high temperatures on some days may not be reached.
Plenty of time to resolve those issues in the coming days.

CONDITIONS IN THE SNOWBELT THIS MORNING...

Heavy lake-effect snow showers will continue to move into the
Lake Superior snowbelt this morning. The snow, combined with
blowing and drifting snow generated by northwest winds gusting to
35 mph will result in near blizzard conditions at times, and very
difficult travel conditions. The snow showers will begin to
diminish this afternoon. Lighter snow showers will continue into
tonight.

Travel in the snowbelt will be very difficult at times today,
especially in open areas. If possible, consider postponing travel
until conditions improve.

CONDITIONS IN OPEN AREAS TODAY...

Northwest winds gusting to 35 to 40 mph will continue to generate
blowing and drifting snow in open areas today. The impact on
travel in urban and heavily forested areas will be minimal. But
travel through open areas could be much more difficult as the
visibility will be significantly reduced at times. Anyone
traveling today should be especially alert for the possibility of
encountering patches of icy and very slippery pavement in areas
where the wind blows a thin layer of snow back across the road
after snow plows have cleared off the deep snow. Often in these
situations, the thin layer of fresh snow will be packed down by
passing vehicles and polished off into a layer of glare ice.

The core of the coldest air has shifted east of the area. So
although it will still be cold today, temperatures will be 10 to
15 degrees warmer that at the same time yesterday. Wind chill
indices of 15 below to 25 below zero are expected in central
Wisconsin this morning. Wind chills of 10 below to 20 below zero
are anticipated across most of the rest of the area, though
slightly less harsh conditions are expected in far northeast
Wisconsin.
