.SHORT TERM...Tonight and Saturday
Issued at 512 PM CST Fri Mar 4 2022

The main focus from this forecast period revolves around the
potential for significant icing across the forecast area late
tonight through late Saturday morning.

Tonight through Saturday Morning...The first half of the night will
remain dry under mostly cloudy skies as WAA and isentropic upglide
spread across the region. Wintry mix chances will increase after
midnight across central and north-central WI and spread west into
early Saturday morning. As confidence has increased with ice
accumulations of 0.10 to 0.30 inches in portions of central and
north-central WI late tonight through late Saturday morning, and the
lower potential for snow and sleet due to warmer temperatures,
decided to issue an Ice Storm Warning for counties in north-central
WI and Marathon County. As ice accumulations have also increased in
other portions of central WI and far northeast WI, between 0.10 and
0.20 inches, decided to extend the Winter Weather Advisory for these
locations. This leaves east-central WI and the lakeshore without a
headline as ice accumulations have decreased; however, a light glaze
is possible in some spots. Heading into Saturday morning, surface
temperatures will begin to warm from south to north and cause the
freezing rain to transition to rain. By midday Saturday, all
locations will see rain.

Saturday afternoon...Before a surface warm front lifts across the
forecast area, moisture will decrease throughout the afternoon,
causing the rain to be more scattered in nature. As the surface low
associated with the warm front approaches the forecast area later on
Saturday afternoon, better forcing will begin to move into the
region. This will cause the rain chances to increase from west to
east. In addition, models are indicating steep mid-level lapse rates
with some increased CAPE across central WI late Saturday afternoon,
which may produce isolated non-severe thunderstorms.

.LONG TERM...Saturday Night Through Friday
Issued at 512 PM CST Fri Mar 4 2022

Low pressure will track through northern Wisconsin Saturday night,
bringing a slug of precipitation through the region. The
precipitation will start out as all rain during the evening,
transitioning to a wintry mix across portions of north-central
Wisconsin late Saturday night. Some modest instability will be
present Saturday evening and just after midnight, with MUCAPEs of
a few hundred J/kg, which will allow for thunderstorms at times.
Portions of central Wisconsin could have a bit higher instability,
with some storms capable of producing small hail and gusty winds
Saturday evening.

Precipitation will quickly come to an end from south to north on
Sunday as the low pulls away from the region and the dry slot
plows into the western Great Lakes. Although additional wintry
precipitation is possible Sunday morning across north-central
Wisconsin, amounts will be low given the best moisture will be
quickly pulling away from the area.

A very tight pressure gradient associated with the aforementioned
low will cause very gusty winds across much of central, east-
central Wisconsin and the lakeshore Saturday night into Sunday
morning. Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph will be possible at times
across these areas, with a Wind Advisory headline possible if
these wind gust values hold or increase in subsequent forecasts.

Another low pressure system will track well to the south late
Sunday night into Monday. This system could bring a swath of light
snow to central and east-central Wisconsin. Snowfall amounts from
this system are expected to be fairly light, on the order of a few
tenths of an inch.

The next chance for substantial precipitation does not arrive
until late in the week, when a low pressure system develops over
the plains on Thursday and tracks through the western Great Lakes
Thursday night into next Friday. There are still substantial model
differences regarding the timing and track of this low, which will
have impacts on precipitation type.

.AVIATION...for 06Z TAF Issuance
Issued at 1050 PM CST Fri Mar 4 2022

VFR conditions are expected to linger through the overnight hours
before MVFR conditions develop overnight into Saturday morning.
Light freezing rain will likely develop across central Wisconsin
just after midnight before spreading eastward through the rest of
the area into Saturday morning. As temperatures warm Saturday
morning across east-central and far northeast Wisconsin, expect
any freezing rain to quickly transition to just plain rain by
around 12Z-15Z at ATW/GRB/MTW. The rest of the TAF sites will
likely see moderate freezing rain through late morning/early
afternoon before transitioning to plain rain. There is an isolated
threat for thunder overnight into Saturday morning, but the best
chance will be toward Saturday evening. Confidence in this
happening was low enough to keep out of the TAF sites with this
update, but may be needed with the 12Z update. LLWS will also
become an issue at each of the TAF sites as a stout temperature
inversion lingers across the area and wind in and just above the
inversion increases to around 40kts, mainly Saturday night.
Visibilities may also drop under the inversion with warmer/moist
air flowing across the remaining snowpack, which could result in
fog formation.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north-central and northeast

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Hazardous travel conditions are expected in most areas late tonight,
especially north and west of the Fox Valley. Freezing rain will be
the main impact tonight with light to moderate ice accumulations
expected, but some light snow and sleet may mix in at times.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Friday

Freezing rain will continue to impact north-central and far
northeast Wisconsin through late Saturday morning and produce
additional moderate ice accumulations, elsewhere will see a quick
transition to rain Saturday morning. Roads and sidewalks could
remain slippery for awhile even after air temperatures warm above
freezing due to very cold pavement.

Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall Saturday afternoon and Saturday
night could lead to localized flooding. Light snow and ice
accumulations will be possible as the storm exits Sunday morning,
mainly across north-central WI. Strong wind gusts could make
travel difficult area wide Saturday night into Sunday.
