Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 339 PM CDT Thu Sep 1 2022 Forecast discussion for routine afternoon forecast issuance .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 338 PM CDT Thu Sep 1 2022 Very warm and somewhat humid tomorrow with scattered thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening. Cooler and much less humid for the weekend, then temperatures returning to above normal for next week. The main westerlies will remain north of the area throughout the period, and should be slowly progressive. The current highly zonal flow will amplify the next couple days as a strong shortwave progresses east cross Canada, then the large scale ridge over the western CONUS will expand/lean ENE into the area next week. Well above normal temperatures and humid conditions are expected tomorrow. Significantly cooler conditions are expected for the weekend, in the wake of a fairly strong cold front. But the cool down won't last long as readings will warm back to above normal next week as the upper ridge builds into the area. The only substantial opportunity for precipitation will be with the cold front, and convection associated with that will probably remain scattered. So amounts will are likely to end up below normal, and some locations could be totally dry during the period. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight and Friday Issued at 338 PM CDT Thu Sep 1 2022 Quiet weather is expected through this evening. Forcing from a weak shortwave lifting northeast from the central Plains will combine with some isentropic lift and steepening mid-level lapse over east-central Wisconsin late tonight into Friday morning. Some of the model forecast soundings exhibited weak elevated CAPE with little capping, which might support some sprinkles or showers out of a mid cloud deck. Introduced slight chance PoPs to account for this possibility. The best chance for thunderstorms with the approaching cold front will hold off until after 00Z Saturday (the long-term part of the forecast). A warm layer aloft will need to be overcome to initiate convection, and that may take the added lift supplied by the convergence along the front or lifting back over the frontal surface. If that is the case, the storms could be primarily post frontal. As a result, opted to trim/delay the arrival of PoPs over north-central Wisconsin during the afternoon. .LONG TERM...Friday Night Through Thursday Issued at 338 PM CDT Thu Sep 1 2022 The main focus from this forecast period is the shower and thunderstorm potential Friday evening into Saturday morning, as a frontal boundary drops southeast across the forecast area. Temperatures will start out below normal for the Holiday Weekend and end with near normal temps for Labor Day (Monday). Temps then look to rise above normal for midweek next week. Friday evening through Saturday...A cold front will drop southeast across the forecast area Friday evening and night, and bring chances for showers and thunderstorms. Ahead of the boundary, steep mid- level lapse rates will be present with MUCAPE between 1000 to 2000 J/kg. However, deep-layer shear of 20 to 30 kts will not support long-lived storms. In addition, instability will quickly decrease into the late evening and overnight as the front drops further southeast across the forecast area. This will lead to a small window for isolated strong storms, mainly across the Northwoods, capable of producing strong gusty winds and hail. By early Saturday morning, showers and a few non-severe storms will lingering across east- central and far northeast WI. Some guidance indicates the front slowing down as it reaches east-central WI, which may cause showers to linger into the early afternoon. For now, kept clouds in place for a bit longer in east-central WI during this time. North/northeast winds will increase along the lakeshore areas following the cold frontal passage Saturday morning, raising concern for high waves at Lake Michigan beaches, especially with it being a Holiday Weekend. High temperatures on Saturday will be below normal with readings ranging from the middle 60s to middle 70s. Rest of the extended...High pressure will build into the region Saturday night and prevail across the region through midweek, keeping dry conditions in the forecast. Temperatures will be below normal on Sunday with highs in the low 70s, followed by gradual warming to the low to middle 80s by midweek. && .AVIATION...for 18Z TAF Issuance Issued at 103 PM CDT Thu Sep 1 2022 Good aviation weather conditions are expected through early tonight. LLWS will develop from SE-NE across the area during the night time, and continue into early Friday until a deepening mixed layer results in the stronger winds mixing down to the surface as 20-25 kt gusts.
