.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

20Z Water vapor imagery indicates fairly robust short wave trough
exiting the area and was centered over northern Oklahoma. System was
responsible for some fairly strong snow showers across Greeley and
Wichita counties, causing 1-3 inches of snow in a localized area. At
the surface a cold front was moving through the CWA and was located
between Oakley and Scott City.
Forecast concerns will be how the pattern evolves over the next 48
hours as potential winter storm develops.
Cold front will stall across the area tonight and aside from setting
off a few weak rain/snow showers in the late afternoon, weather will
be relatively quiet in the evening. As sfc low develops across
eastern Colorado front will stall and somewhat moist return flow
will develop along and north of the front. Think this area will fill
in as fog/low stratus after 06z and given weak orographic forcing
and differential temperature advection there actually is a window
overnight where freezing drizzle may develop due to weak shallow
convection. Think amounts will only be a trace, but may make things
slippery in the fog.
Attention then turns to deepening low pressure system as snow
develops north of the front during the late morning and afternoon
hours. Initially, snow looks to remain stratiform in broad area of
warm air advection focused mainly north of Interstate 70. During the
afternoon and evening cyclogenesis will intensify and in response
expect snow to become fairly widespread across the area. Frontal
zone around H65 has ample instability to work with above this
surface and expect an intense band or series of bands to develop in
the larger area of precipitation. Given the combination of strong
mesoscale forcing and instability a few locations may very well see
accumulations greater than 8 inches, but given the general low
predictability of these kind of events nailing down the exact area
remain difficult. As it stands, will leave watch going today
although nearly at warning confidence for area from McCook to Hoxie
and points east.
In addition to the heavy snow potential Wednesday night, deepening
low will bring a corresponding increase in winds during the evening
on Wednesday. Winds will be strongest south of Interstate 70 where
winds gusting to 45 mph not out of the question. While winds will be
strongest where snow is least likely, there will be some locations
where winds and falling snow will line up for a few areas. This will
likely result in near blizzard conditions during the evening hours,
potentially along Interstate 70.
Snow will diminish on Thursday as low moves to the east and weakens
leading to a gradual end to accumulating snow. While system will
bring an end to the snow, it will leave much colder temperatures in
its wake with highs struggling to get out of the teens in many
locations.

The long term period starts with below average temperatures on
Friday before warming to near or above average temperatures for the
remainder of the period. More uncertainty has been added going into
next week as the shortwaves in the upper flow now may have surface
systems or cold fronts with them which would impact temperatures and
potentially bring precipitation.
For Thursday night and into Friday, the positive tilt of the trough
has it forecasted to move through the area during this time period.
As this occurs, any remaining cloud cover and light snow will begin
to push out of the area. In regard to temperatures, morning lows are
forecasted to be in the single digits while highs reach the 20's and
30's. During the overnight and Friday morning hours, wind chills
could drop into the negatives with a few locales reaching the
negative teens.
Going into Saturday, the previous higher surface pressure and upper
trough is forecasted to move off to the east which would allow the
next upper ridge to start moving into the area. Near the surface,
broader lower pressure could start forming while winds shift back to
out of the south. With this daytime highs would reach the 50's, but
areas with snow cover lingering would struggle to reach the mid
40's. Henceforth, locales generally east have highs forecasted in
the 40's and there could even be some 30's if the snow from the
previous system is heavy and lingers.
Sunday through Tuesday has a general trend of warm and dry with some
upper level ridging. However, confidence is increasing in either
some shortwave disturbances or even a "flattening" of the flow which
could impact how much the area warms up and if precipitation
returns. Guidance currently is keying in on late Sunday into Monday
with a shortwave trough moving through the High Plains and an
associated cold front. Given this relatively new shift (there was
some hints of this yesterday), I haven't switched over to this
solution but it could bring precipitation Sunday and cooler
temperatures Monday. Will need to monitor if this signal becomes
stronger but am keeping the near to above average temperatures for
now with dry conditions.

VFR conditions are anticipated for the first several hours of the
06Z TAF period with light winds. There is potential for
fog/freezing fog to develop over the KGLD terminal beginning
around 09Z with visibilities dropping to MVFR criteria. Freezing
drizzle may also develop within the vicinity of both KGLD and KMCK around
10Z. MVFR to potentially IFR conditions due to fog are expected
to linger through noon.
During the afternoon hours through the remainder of the period
light to moderate snow is expected to impact the terminals,
reducing visibility to IFR conditions at times. Light snow is
expected to push south during the afternoon hours with the best
chances for snow occurring around after 20Z. Winds are expected to
shift to the northeast from ~00Z to 06Z with speeds increasing to
15-20 kts and gusts up to 30 kts. This could create further
visibility restrictions due to blowing snow.
