* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...An area of freezing drizzle may develop 
  along and east of Highway 83 in Kansas late morning through 
  the afternoon Wednesday. Life threatening cold conditions are 
  expected for nearly 36 hours along with snow and blowing snow 
  creating near blizzard conditions Wednesday night. The 
  combination of these hazards will cause very dangerous travel 
  conditions Wednesday night, especially if becoming stranded as 
  road closures are possible.

* WHAT...For the Wind Chill Warning, dangerously cold wind chill
  readings as low as 50 below zero. For the Winter Weather
  Advisory, snow and blowing snow. Total snow accumulations
  ranging anywhere from a dusting to 2 inches are expected.
  Locally heavier amounts are possible. North winds at 30 to 45
  mph will gust up to 55 mph this evening into Thursday.

* WHERE...Entire Tri-State area.

* WHEN...For the Wind Chill Warning, sunset this evening through
  noon on Friday. For the Winter Weather Advisory, mainly between
  sunset this evening and sunset Thursday evening.

* IMPACTS...Dangerous travel conditions. Life threatening cold
  temperatures and wind chill readings. Frostbite may occur on 
  exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A brief period of freezing drizzle cannot
  be ruled out along and east of Highway 83 in Kansas late this
  morning. Otherwise, a west to east oriented band of snow will
  develop around or shortly after sunset... progressing southward
  through the area this evening. Localized blizzard conditions 
  are possible for a few hours, mainly along and north of 
  Interstate 70 between 5 pm and Midnight MST. Snow will end from 
  north to south between Midnight and sunrise Thursday morning. 
  Strong northerly winds and blowing snow will persist through the
  day on Thursday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Life threatening cold temperatures and wind chill readings are 
expected. Avoid outdoor activities, if possible. If you must 
venture outdoors, make sure to wear appropriate clothing. Dress in
multiple layers, including a hat and gloves. At these extreme 
temperatures, frostbite may occur on exposed skin in as little as 
5 minutes.

Dangerous travel conditions associated with snow and blowing snow are
anticipated this evening into tonight. Consider alternate travel 
plans. If you must travel... carry a winter survival kit. Survival
kits should include warm clothes, boots, blankets, a flashlight

.SHORT TERM...(Today Through Wednesday Night)

Today-Tonight...Initial concerns for the morning hours will be
whether or not fog/low stratus can redevelop similar to yesterday
morning. As of 08Z not seeing any indications on GOES 10.3-3.9
micron data and given how dry dewpoints are across much of the area,
leaning against any development but will keep an eye on satellite
data through sunrise. Otherwise expect relatively quiet weather
today. Main concern will be how entrenched cold air will be across
eastern CWA as potential exists for a 20+ degree gradient from east
to west today. Feel like extreme eastern and northeast zones
will have best potential to remain on the cold side of things.

Wednesday-Wednesday Night...Main focus of the near term will be on
strong arctic front sweeping across the region and associated
wind,snow, temperature and visibility impacts.

During the morning hours, large scale forcing for ascent will begin
to increase as first of two potential vorticity anomalies/short wave
trough moves across southern Kansas. At least initially, think
atmospheric response will be most noticeable across eastern zones
where supercooled and saturated airmass will develop in area of low
level (H85) WAA. While the additional forcing with respect to short
wave trough should be enough for deeper precipitation process, a
persistent dry layer between H7 and H8 brings concerns about ice
introduction. If this does not get overcome, would bring potential
for freezing drizzle instead of light snow. While the amounts would
be light regardless, impact of -fzdz much higher. As it stands now,
think focusing on the -fzdz for the morning hours warranted at this
point. Attention will then turn to powerful cold front that will
begin to rapidly advance across the area. Frontogenesis and EPV*
fields support a rapidly moving, vigorous snow band behind the cold
front. Given the negative EPV* values present would not be shocked
to see a short lived period of heavy snow as it passes. One thing
that limits the potential total accumulations will be the speed of
the system. Give the rapid movement of the forcing, strongest
precipitation may only last around an hour which would limit overall
accumulations. Looks like a deep dendritic growth zone will line up
with the strongest forcing, leading to fluffy (and easy to blow
around) snowfall. The specifics of these various fields vary greatly
between operational model suites however, so would expect the
predicted amounts to vary considerably over the next several runs.

Other complicating factor will be the potential for strong winds as
much colder air blasts into the region. Despite models continuing to
forecast 12-18 3 hour pressure rises behind front, overall wind
forecasts have dropped considerably based on NAM/GFS point
soundings. While it will still be windy, confidence in high winds
(>50 kts) has dropped off as ECMWF/GEFS ensemble probabilities
support the reduction.  With the previously mentioned pressure
rises, not sure if I am totally sold on this weaker solution and
will keep forecast on the higher end of things, although confidence
has been lowered. Due to the changes in confidence with respect to
wind, plan on leaving all the winter highlights as is to prevent any
flip flopping. With slightly faster frontal timing and potential for
a period of sunny and dry conditions may see some areas of dust
accompany the front as it passes in southwestern zones. With
aforementioned weaker winds aloft confidence is low, but overall
pattern indicating some potential for dust issues in the evening.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

...Dangerously Cold Thursday and Thursday Night...

Overview: A vigorous upper level wave, emanating from /associated
with/ a large cyclonic gyre (spanning 50-80N, 75-135W) over
interior/western Canada, will dig southeastward through the
Northern Plains into the Central MS River Valley (Thu)..
progressing eastward into (and dramatically amplifying over) the
OH Valley (Fri) and Lower Great Lakes (Fri night) -- where a
powerful (~955-965 mb) extratropical cyclone is progged to
develop.

Thu-Thu night: Pressure rises.. associated with profound synoptic
subsidence in the wake of the aforementioned upper wave.. will
drive an extremely cold Arctic airmass southward through the
Central/Southern Plains late Wed and early Thu (reaching the Gulf
Coast by sunset Thu evening). With the core of the expansive
Arctic airmass (characterized by H85/850 mb temps -30 to -34C over
WY, NE, and the Dakotas) situated very near/adjacent-to the Tri-
State area -- and a tight MSLP-H85 height gradient /strong cold
advection/ on the southern periphery of the 1050-1055 mb Arctic
high (centered over MT/WY/western Dakotas) -- dangerously cold
temperatures and wind chill readings are anticipated. Daytime
temperatures will struggle to exceed 0F. Clear skies and strong
cold advection throughout the day on Thu will foster steep low-
level lapse rates and vigorous vertical mixing within a shallow
(2,000-4,000 ft) mixed layer.. where forecast soundings
[presently] indicate ~30-40 knot NNW flow will reside. With this
in mind.. expect sustained NNW winds ranging anywhere from 30-45
mph and gusts up to 55 mph. With clear skies, weakening north
winds, and fresh snow cover [in some areas] Thu night, expect air
temperatures ranging anywhere from -15 to -25F Fri morning..
possibly even colder in northeast CO and southwest NE.. in closer
proximity to the core of the Arctic airmass (and where snow cover
is more likely). Wind chill readings ranging from -30 to -50F are
likely across the entire area Thu-Thu night.. coldest in northeast
CO and adjacent KS/NE border counties.

Fri-Fri night: A moderating trend (relatively-speaking) will
commence in this period.. as the Arctic airmass progresses east of
the Mississippi (into the OH/TN Valley). Expect high temperatures
ranging from the upper single digits (north) to mid-upper teens
(south).. 10-20F warmer than Thu. Clear skies, light winds, and
snow cover [in some areas] will, nevertheless, foster frigid
overnight lows.. ranging from -5 to -10F. At these temperatures..
a light (5-10 mph) breeze will yield wind chill readings on the
order of -15 to -20F.

Sat-Tue: Dry conditions and a warming/moderating trend will
persist through the weekend into early next week.. as an
amplifying upper level ridge progresses eastward from the Pacific
Coast to the Rockies. Near-normal to above-normal temperatures
will return by Sunday.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

VFR conditions are expected through the majority of the TAF
period. Winds will remain around 10-15 knots from the ESE with the
higher end of winds at KGLD. Clouds will begin increasing
overnight leading to BKN to OVC sky cover but not currently
expecting any ceiling lower than 10,000 to 15,000 feet. KMCK will
need to keep an eye out for potential MVFR ceiling mid morning
Wednesday along with freezing drizzle. Currently I am expecting
any freezing drizzle and MVFR ceilings to remain east at KMCK but
will need to be monitored.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...

A bitterly cold airmass will build into the region Wednesday through
Friday driving wind chills to life threatening levels. There is high
confidence of wind chill readings ranging from 30 below to 50 below
zero Thursday morning. This will be a dangerous and life threatening
situation for people without shelter or a way to keep warm. Those
with vulnerable outdoor interests such as livestock should prepare
for several days of bitterly cold conditions by the middle of this
week.

As the cold front responsible for the cold weather sweeps across the
area Wednesday night. Strong northerly winds gusting in excess of 50
mph are possible. The strong winds, combined with light and powdery
snow will create significant areas of blowing snow and near blizzard
conditions. The combination of blowing snow and very cold
temperatures will create especially hazardous conditions for those
traveling Wednesday night.

The threat of blowing snow that will reduce visibilities looks to
continue throughout Thursday for areas east of the Colorado border
and along and north of Interstate 70. Travel may be hazardous due to
these conditions. Please watch for further forecast updates.
