The primary short term focus is on Friday with a combination of
hazards from high winds to extreme fire weather conditions and the
potential for severe storms.
The ridge in the westerly flow aloft moves east of the region
today with the upper flow becoming increasingly more southwesterly
with a short wave trough embedded in the flow moving across the
area this evening. The deepening upper low over the western U.S.
moves through the Intermountain region on Friday and emerges east
of the Rockies over eastern Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle
region early Saturday morning before continuing across the Dakotas
on Saturday and Saturday night.
Southeast near surface flow through the day today across the area
brings higher dewpoint air into the region that increases the
instability over the far eastern sections of the forecast area.
That instability along with the short wave trough aloft could
produce isolated to scattered thunderstorms with marginal risk of
severe storms with large hail and damaging winds late this
afternoon through the evening.
The pressure gradient shifts and continues to steepen across the
area ahead of the surface low that consolidates over northeast
Colorado by late Friday before it lifts off to the northeast
across Nebraska and the Dakotas Friday night into early Saturday.
That steep pressure gradient is expected to produce south winds of
30 to 45 mph with gusts over 60 mph possible. With those strong
winds, areas of blowing dust with diminished visibilities are
possible through the day. Very dry air with high temperatures
ranging from the middle 80s to the middle 90s are expected across
the forecast area along with RH values down around 10 percent
over eastern Colorado from mid-day through the early evening.
Higher RH values will be in place further to the east that push
back to the west from the late afternoon through the evening and
overnight hours.
Areas of low RH will combine with the strong winds to create
Near-critical to Extreme fire weather conditions over the western
sections of the forecast area. A few thunderstorms are possible
Friday afternoon east of the dryline over the eastern sections with
more numerous storms expected Friday evening into Friday night as
the dryline moves back to the west and higher dewpoint and more
unstable air moves back towards the west and remains mostly east
of the eastern Colorado border. With the upper dynamics
associated with the approaching upper low beginning to lift across
the region late Friday into Friday night, severe storms are
possible in the vicinity of the Colorado border during the evening
that are expected to move east across the forecast area during
the overnight hours.
Saturday will be cooler in the wake of the system lifting out of
the region with a few lingering showers and gusty northwest winds.

For the long term period, generally drier and warmer as an upper
level ridge moves into the area.
Sunday and Monday start with whats left of the upper level trough
dissipating as 500mb heights rise across the area. Near the surface,
higher pressure is expected to move through the area in the wake of
the cold front that passed towards the beginning of the weekend. So
in spite of drier air moving into the area, temperatures will remain
relatively cool with the colder air mass in place. Highs both days
are forecasted to be in the 60's with plenty of sunshine.
Tuesday and beyond is forecasted to be warmer as the dry conditions
continue and an upper level ridge moves over the area from the
Western CONUS. With 850mb temps forecasted to reach 20-25C across
most of the area, temperatures in the upper 70's and 80's seem
likely. It then will come down to when does the ridge deamplify as
that will be the next chance at cooler temperatures. Ensembles right
now don't show that happening until after the period though the
ridge could start deamplifying by Thursday if some of the GEFS
members are correct.
In regards to rain, there is a small chance for some thunderstorms
around the mid part of the week. Some guidance is suggesting that
some moisture will make its way north into the area. If this does
occur, some storms would be possible during the afternoon/evening
hours, mainly towards the east where the moisture is more likely to
make it far enough north. Will have to see if the drier air can hold
the moisture away from the Tri-State area.

An area of low clouds and fog along/north of a warm front is
lifting north from southwest Kansas into northwest Kansas.
Expecting ceiling reductions to occur at KGLD by later this
afternoon and at KMCK by early this evening. IFR ceilings will be
possible through this evening and into the overnight at both
terminals. In addition, a few hours of fog may also occur this
evening into the overnight. Towards sunrise Friday morning, the
low clouds and fog are forecast to lift north out of the area.
Friday morning, southerly winds will rapidly increase, especially
at KGLD, where blowing dust may develop towards the end of the TAF
period.
