.DISCUSSION...(This afternoon through Wednesday)

Wow what a busy night it has been! There is quite a lot going on in
this forecast, and all of it is in the short term with most of this
discussion focusing on today and tomorrow.

Starting off this morning with some areas of dense fog in the east
and a Dense Fog advisory is in effect until 10 AM. Fog is expected
to then scatter out as winds begin to increase for the day and as
high clouds continue to move in from the south. Despite some of the
patchy cloud cover today, highs are still expected to reach into the
mid and upper 70s across the area. Winds will be out of the east
initially then turn more southeast as the day goes on and will be
fairly breezy around 20-25 mph.

This afternoon and evening chances for rain come back into the
forecast with a warm front and a LLJ that will lift precip
northward. Precip could start as drizzle in the immediate vicinity
of the warm front as dew points rise and the atmospheric profile
saturates, but a drier layer is still maintained aloft. Elevated
strong to severe storms will also be possible initially along the
warm front and then farther north along the LLJ, but the majority of
the activity along the LLJ should be focused to our east and south.
The main severe threat will be hail to around the size of
quarters. Precip will spread northward overnight and taper off
around Friday morning.

Friday is by far the busiest day of the forecast with numerous
weather hazards and possible record highs. Ridging aloft will move
off to the east as the next trof aloft moves east across the western
CONUS. Thanks to this trof a lee low will develop and deepen just to
our west and will create a rather tight pressure gradient with sfc
high pressure to the east. This will lead to rather strong winds
across the region. Winds will be out of the south at around 35-45
mph with gusts to around 60 mph. A High Wind Watch has been issued
for tomorrow afternoon into the overnight. This will only be one of
numerous weather hazards present tomorrow. These strong winds will
also lead to areas of blowing dust which could reduce visibility at
times as well as lead to lesser air quality. Tomorrow could also see
near record highs with the Tri-Cities expected to see highs around
93, see the climate section below. There will also be fire weather
concerns tomorrow afternoon and a Red Flag Warning has been issued
for several western counties. See the fire weather section below for
more details.

At the sfc tomorrow a cold front will extend south from the sfc low
that is set up to the west. A dry line will also extend south from
the low to our west and will likely clip the western most
portions of Dawson county. With 60s dewpoints expected along and
east of HWY 281 and highs in the 90s, it will feel more like a mid
summer day rather than a late spring day. The other main hazard
tomorrow is the SPC Enhanced Risk that covers a majority of the
CWA. We could see storms firing as early as tomorrow afternoon out
in the warm sector ahead of the cold front and along the dry
line. However, quite a few models are not generating any
convection before 06Z. Storms are more likely to then form along
the cold front with more of a linear mode as it moves east
overnight. Although they will be overnight, several of these
storms could be strong to severe with the main threat being
damaging winds and hail.

Storms could linger well into the day on Saturday and are expected
to taper off west to east. With the passage of the cold front temps
will be cooler and generally in the 70s across the area on Saturday.
Winds will continue to be strong, but will not be nearly as strong
as Friday. Winds will be out of the south initially and gradually
turn northwesterly behind the cold front, with speeds around 20-30
mph and gusts to around 40 mph. Near critical fire weather will
again be possible for portions of the area. See the fire weather
section below.

Dry weather returns on Sunday with cooler temps in the 60s. Aloft
the trof, which now has an embedded closed low, will be spinning
to our north and pushing northeastward along with the sfc low. As
sfc high pressure fills in behind, we will continue to see breezy
northwest winds on the back side of the low similar to Saturday.
Monday will continue with temps in the 60s, though slightly
warmer, and the winds will finally come down some. Ridging aloft
will reside just to our west with high pressure at the sfc. The
ridge aloft will move over the region on Tuesday and help bring
highs back up into the 70s. Then we continue to warm into the 80s
for portions of the area on Wednesday. Weak PoPs come back into
the forecast Tuesday night and last through Thursday thanks to a
weak disturbance aloft over the US-Canada border.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z KGRI/KEAR TAFS through 18Z Friday)

VFR conditions expected through the early evening hours as east
southeasterly flow continues and clouds begin to encroach on the
terminals from the south. Expect a small chance for a -TSRA from
about 22/03Z-22/09Z...as we could see some development near the
LLJ. This LLJ will also result in LLWS for much of the overnight
hours...and per sounding data...increased the height of this layer
to closer to 1.8KFT. Otherwise...could see a few hours of MVFR
stratus towards morning as indicated in time heights with warm air
advection and overnight SHRA/-TSRA activity. Clouds should
eventually mostly scatter out by late morning as winds
intensify...with gusts to near 40 KTS toward the tail end of the
TAF period...and even high in the afternoon/evening hours
tomorrow.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 655 AM CDT Thu Apr 21 2022

Windy and hot conditions tomorrow will not make a good combination
for fire weather concerns. A dry line will set up southwest of the
area during the day on Friday and will work its way northeast and
will clip the western most portions of our area. This means we could
see RH values as low as 10% for portions of Dawson, Gosper, and
Furnas counties Friday afternoon. These three counties are the
highest confidence for reaching critical conditions in the afternoon
tomorrow. The rest of the RFW has RH values less than 25% which would
not typically warrant a RFW but given the strength of the winds and
our general lack of rainfall, one was warranted.

Winds on Friday will be out the south at around 35-45 mph with gusts
to around 60 mph possible. Highs are expected to climb into the 90s,
but dewpoints will be in the 60s mainly along and east of HWY 281.
Most of the area will reside in the warm moist sector south of a warm
front and east of the dry line.

Saturday afternoon could also see some spots of near critical and
critical conditions down south, mainly across portions of north
central KS. Winds will also be strong again Saturday, though not
nearly as much as Friday. Winds will again be out of the south and at
25-35 mph with gusts to around 45 mph. It's possible a Fire Weather
Watch may be needed for this time frame.

.CLIMATE...

Near-to-potentially record breaking warmth is forecast for
Friday, April 22. Details follow for Grand Island/Hastings
airports (our two primary locations for which we track official
records):

- Grand Island: current forecast 93 (record 94 in 1989)
- Hastings:     current forecast 91 (record 93 in 1937)

Record warm low temperatures appear unlikely at the moment due to
low temperatures Friday morning forecast to be in the 50s, which
is well below the record warm lows in the mid to upper 60s for
April 22.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for south central Nebraska and
portions of north central Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

Near critical fire weather conditions are expected across areas
primarily along and west of highway 281 this afternoon.

In addition....there will be a chance for thunderstorms as early
as this afternoon in north central Kansas, with isolated to
scattered activity then spreading north into Nebraska areas this
evening and overnight. Most of the outlook area is under a
Marginal to Slight risk that a few of these storms could become
severe, with the main threat being large hail to at least quarter
size.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Starting with fire weather concerns and strong non-thunderstorm
winds, several afternoons through the next week will likely
feature at least near-critical fire weather conditions across
much of the area, with at least limited critical conditions
possible. The greatest concern is Friday afternoon and early
evening, when the entire outlook area will endure unseasonably hot
temperatures and strong south winds, sustained at least 35 to 45
MPH and gusting to around 60 MPH. While the entire area will
endure these strong winds, the overall-lowest relative humidity of
10 to 25 percent is currently expected to focus within Valley,
Sherman, Dawson, Buffalo, Gosper, Phelps, Furnas and Harlan
counties, where a Red Flag Warning has been issued for Friday
afternoon and early evening. In addition to critical fire weather
concerns Friday, the intense south winds will likely also promote
areas of blowing dust and possible reduced visibility across much
of the outlook area.

Due to the magnitude of the high winds expected on Friday a High
Wind Watch has also been issued for Friday afternoon through late
Friday night. These winds will also result in areas of blowing
dust which could reduce visibility.

Turning to thunderstorms, there will likely be a few rounds of
storms within the outlook area between Friday evening and
Saturday afternoon. There are still plenty of details to sort out
regarding the timing and magnitude of this thunderstorm threat,
but majority of the outlook area is currently under an Enhanced
Risk of severe storms Friday. Large hail and damaging winds would
be the most likely threats, although a low tornado threat cannot
be ruled out.
