conditions will remain possible across portions of the outlook
area through 2 AM.

.DISCUSSION...(This evening through Tuesday)

Forecast concerns are obviously high wind and critical fire weather
over the next several days.

Summary: Bottom line is that windy and dry conditions are forecast
for the next few days for the entire forecast area. There are
nuances to the severity of the wind and low humidity, and
resultant fire weather conditions, but this is more for
technicalities than anything as the SENSIBLE weather will not be
THAT much different from one location to the next. It's dry, it's
windy...some places will be slightly to moderately worse than
others...but in general, it's not going to be very pleasant until
later this week. Wind speeds will drop off Friday and into the
weekend, but still remain a bit breezy during the afternoon hours,
so when combined with warming temps and continued dry low levels
and we'll still (unfortunately) be dealing with fire weather
concerns through at least portions of the upcoming weekend. A
potentially stronger storm system could track towards the region
in about 7-8 days, but model differences remain fairly high with
regards to timing and track.

Forecast Details: Busy forecast, so will focus more on the hazards
than a chronological overview.

Fire weather concerns are discussed below in dedicated Fire Weather
section.

High wind: Winds have played out generally as expected today, with
gusts of 35 to 45 mph fairly common behind the cold front. The
front itself was a little slower than expected. Winds will remain
brzy through the overnight, but expect a significant uptick in
speeds/gusts towards 14-15Z as mixing increases amidst mostly clr
skies, steep lapse rates, and unidirectional low level flow. An
approaching shortwave by midday will spread incr clds from N to S,
which, at least in part, appears to explain the slight decr in
forecast peak wind gusts on last couple model runs. The 00Z EC
showed a noticeable decr in both EFI and SOT values, suggesting
the wind gusts could be a little more borderline for HWW criteria
for Wed than once thought. NBM 4.1 has also shown slight decr.
Nonetheless, it's still close for at least W/NW of CWA given H85
flow 45-50kt, highest prior to 18Z. Could be situation where we
peak at HWW criteria 15Z to 18Z, then remain near or just below
criteria during the aftn, esp N 2/3rds of CWA that looks to see
more cld cover. Despite somewhat lower confidence in reaching
warning criteria gusts, was essentially forced to expand the HWW
eastward so as to avoid a gap in wind headlines between us and
surrounding offices. Winds will back off some Wed. night, but
remain strong, then incr once again for daytime hrs Thu. Both EFI
and NBM 4.1 are a bit higher for Thu, and there appears to be less
potential for rotating shortwave/thick cld cover...so might
actually have slightly higher confidence in reaching HWW criteria
over wider spatial/temporal scale on Thu. Did not make any changes
to existing High Wind Watch. Should end the really strong winds
Thu eve, but it will remain brzy through the daytime hrs Fri as
well as on Sat.

Blowing Dust: Pulled potential in the far W this eve given
continued cld cover and lesser-than-expected low level lapse
rates. Maintained the blowing dust on Wed, though limited it to
patchy wording for a good chunk of our Neb zones where clds and
maybe even some lgt rn shwrs could limit ability for top layer of
soil to really dry out. Blowing dust mention continues Thu.
Details (as always with BLDU) are uncertain and will likely be
highly dependent on local ground/soil conditions, but could
conceivably be a little worse given steeper lapse rates, perhaps
more sun, and added drying time. However, it's not a slam dunk
for issues by any means. In general, anything more than broad
/low-end mention of BLDU will have to wait until a nowcasting
setting when obs/cameras provide more confidence in its existence.

Precipitation chances: Most areas have seen only sprinkles today,
with perhaps some very isolated .01-.02" under strongest echoes.
This activity should depart SE over next several hrs, leaving dry
conditions for the overnight. The next chc for sprinkles/lt rn
shwrs will develop as early as midday Wed over the far N as a
spoke of upper level energy and low-mid level moisture rotates
S/SE around parent upper cyclone over Upper MS Valley. Several
models produce at least very lgt QPF, and select forecast
soundings show pretty classic setup of steep lapse rates/CAA/non-
zero SBCAPE beneath pocket of cold mid level temps for "heating-
of- the- day" pop-up type shallow convection/shwrs. Most areas
probably only see trace amnts (like today), but isolated heavier
bursts can't be ruled out, esp. N of I-80. Can't rule out another
round of sprinkles over the far NE Thu, but better chcs remain off
to the NE. Should stay dry Fri thru Sun before incr SW upper flow
ahead of next trough brings chc for moisture as early as Sun
night. Could see better/more widespread chcs towards day 7-8 as
strong/deep upper trough shifts E across the W CONUS, but there's
considerable spread w/r/t timing/track of pertinent details, so
confidence on sensible weather remains low attm.

Overall temperature trends will be for near to below normal
temperatures behind the cold front from tonight through Friday
afternoon. A quick warmup will arrive in time for the weekend and
continue into early next week as highs return to the mid 60s to mid
70s. May sneak in some 80s at some point, depending on cloud cover
and timing of next storm system.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z KGRI/KEAR TAFS through 00Z Thursday)

The northwest wind has been rather variable in terms of speed this
evening. The wind has been jumping around from as low as 10 mph up
to gusts in the 25 to 30 mph at our TAF sites, with stronger gusts
just west of our TAF sites. Overall, the wind will likely decrease
some overnight although remaining breezy at times. The wind will
then quickly increase by mid morning on Wednesday with some gusts
by Wednesday afternoon into the 50 to 60 mph range. Sky conditions
should remain VFR although low end VFR ceilings are expected much
of Wednesday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 402 PM CDT Tue Apr 5 2022

Rest of today: Ongoing Red Flag Warning is likely going to fall
short of official criteria as ongoing clouds have really stymied
temps. Wind gusts have been substantial in the 35 to 45 MPH range,
and fuels are dry, but RH levels have generally been 30 to 50
percent, or higher, thus far. However, upstream obs and short-term
model guidance suggests a late surge in drier air will be possible
this eve as clouds clear out, so dip in RH to 20 to 30 percent
range may still occur over at least western portions of the
ongoing RFW in the 23Z to 03Z time frame. As a result, didn't feel
comfortable canceling any of the RFW with the aftn package, but if
trends don't actually materialize soon, eve shift may be able to
more confidently cancel early.

Wednesday: The concerns regarding fire weather are fairly similar
to what was mentioned above in that increasing cloud cover (and
maybe even sprinkles or light rain showers) during traditional
peak afternoon heating hours may once again stymie temps and
associated RH drop, esp. for areas north of the state line. Poor
RH recovery tonight, along with initial clear skies and steep
lapse rates during the AM, may actually lead some areas south of
the state line to reach near-critical/critical criteria
relatively early on in the day, like 15Z to 17Z, then back off
some during the aftn as clds/higher RH filter in from the north.
Fire weather partners stress that the very strong winds and very
dry fine fuels will be able to compensate for the marginal RHs,
so didn't want to get too cute at this point given model
differences and decided to upgrade the existing Fire Weather
Watch to a Red Flag Warning and moved up the start time to 15Z.
Unless the shortwave is much weaker and/or faster/slower, don't
anticipate needing much change from here.

Thursday: Winds remain very strong during the daytime hours.
Similar to Wed., RHs are a bit marginal for traditional RFW
criteria, but aforementioned factors argue for at least a Fire
Weather Watch at this point, for roughly the same areas as Wed. If
temps trend warmer and/or clouds trend lower, may need to expand
the headline coverage. At any rate, another day where burning is
not recommended as very strong wind and dry fuels will make for a
dangerous combination.

Wind speeds will decrease for Friday-Saturday time frame, but
could remain high enough during the afternoon hours to warrant
additional headlines given continued dry low levels/fuels.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for south central Nebraska and
portions of north central Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

Near critical fire weather conditions will remain possible across
portions of the outlook area through 2 AM.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Very strong, to potentially damaging northwest winds are expected
across the outlook area both Wednesday and Thursday, especially
between the mid-morning and evening hours when gusts as high as
55 to 65 MPH are most favored to occur. As a result, a High Wind
Warning has been issued for most of the outlook area on
Wednesday, and a High Wind Watch has been issued for most of the
area Thursday, which could eventually be upgraded to a Warning if
confidence continues to grow in the forecast wind speeds. Please
refer to the Warning and Watch messages for more details. Areas
along the Highway 81 corridor are not currently in the High Wind
Watch Thursday, but wind gusts of 50 to 55 MPH are still likely.

Near-critical to critical fire weather conditions will continue
within at least portions of the outlook area each afternoon
between Wednesday and Monday. The magnitude of each day's fire
weather threat and the possibility of Watches or Warnings will be
best assessed one to two days at a time, so stay tuned for more
details as the week goes on. For now, a Red Flag Warning has been
issued for Wednesday and a Fire Weather Watch for Thursday for
all local north central Kansas counties, and far southern
portions of south central Nebraska. This is where relative
humidity is most favored to fall below 25 percent in the presence
of intense northwest winds. Please refer to the fire weather
statements for more details. Near-critical conditions will
certainly extend farther north into more of the outlook area
Wednesday and Thursday, but relative humidity will not be quite as
low.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation will not be needed through tonight, but any
reports of possible wildfires would be appreciated.
