KEY MESSAGES:

east central SD across southwest MN. As temperatures slowly warm
this morning, freezing rain changes to rain, with icing improving
after daybreak.
3. Most areas see a lull this afternoon/evening, but snow spreads
into areas west of the James River late tonight, and slides further
east Wednesday through Thursday. Increasing winds west of the James
River late Wednesday through Thursday will create areas of blowing
snow.
4. Temperatures steadily fall behind this system, through the
weekend and at least the first half of next week. Sub-zero wind
chills are likely this weekend, with wind chills possibly reaching
advisory levels by the end of this forecast period.

Bands of rain continue to lift northward across the region early
this morning, and with temperatures still hovering a degree or two
either side of freezing, we have been seeing several reports of ice
accumulations and slippery conditions. Had given some thought to
canceling portions of the winter weather advisory early in those
areas where temperatures have risen to 34, but these temperatures
are pretty spotty thus far, and feel it is best to hold on to the
headlines where icing has taken place and could impact the morning
commute. More likely to see improvement in conditions after daytime
insolation has a chance to work, even through the rather thick low
cloud deck, so current end time of these headlines looks ok for now.
By this afternoon, a pronounced mid-level dry slot begins expanding
northward into the lower Missouri River Valley, as the upper system
centered to our west strengthens and lifts northeast into central
Nebraska. Low level moisture remains rather abundant, and still see
waves of dynamic support ahead of the slowly approaching upper low,
so cannot rule out periods of very light precipitation into tonight.
However, given the lack of moisture in the ice-bearing mid-levels,
it looks like drizzle will be the dominant type for much of the
forecast area. Exceptions will be in the far west, where mid level
moisture may remain in place. Temperatures are currently expected
to remain just above freezing through much of the night, supported
by dew points which are likewise at/slightly above 32F. Thus do not
anticipate much additional icing. However, could see some light snow
accumulations by daybreak Wednesday in areas near/west of I-29, as
mid level moisture and colder low level air wrap back into these
areas from the southwest after 06Z tonight.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Wednesday through Thursday will see the upper low drift into the
Missouri River Valley (SD/NE border area), before pivoting east
across Iowa. System is nearly stacked by this time, so will be
slow to shift east. Given proximity of the surface low/inverted
trough, our winds will remain on the lighter side Wednesday, but
will begin to increase in areas west of the James River Valley by
later Wednesday through Thursday. This area may also be impacted
by some higher snowfall totals, as the system has trended a bit
eastward with higher mid-week QPF. For now, totals remain in the
4 to 6 inch range over this prolonged 36 hour period for areas
along and west of the James River Valley, with winds occasionally
gusting near 40 mph Wednesday night/Thursday, especially toward
south central South Dakota. Given the prolonged nature of light
snowfall, will stick with the Winter Weather Advisory for this
portion of the event, but have expanded the advisory east toward
Mitchell and Tyndall. However, some ensemble members are farther
east with the heavier snow, with moderate probabilities (50-70%)
west of De Smet-Mitchell-Tyndall line of seeing snowfall totals
exceed 6 inches over this period. If this pans out, headlines may
need to be upgraded, but will monitor trends before making these
changes.
Upper low is slow to leave, swinging north through the Upper
Mississippi River Valley and lingering over the western Great
lakes into Saturday. Lingering moisture and weak lift in the
cyclonic upper level flow may continue to produce very light snow
or flurries into at least Friday, possibly longer, before drier
air takes over. Deep northwest flow behind the departing system
will also draw colder air into the region. This cooling trend
looks to persist into at least the first half of next week, though
there is disagreement on the persistence of the cold push among
the various models. That said, if the cold arctic high pressure
seen in the GFS/ECMWF pans out, we could see advisory level wind
chills across portions of the area by Tuesday morning.

The powerful system continues to spiral through the entire region
early this afternoon. Precipitation across the region is
currently falling as rain across the majority of the area. The
exception is the Buffalo Ridge in southwest Minnesota, which will
still see light freezing drizzle mix in with drizzle/rain through
the afternoon. A dry slot will push into the region during the mid
afternoon hours, reducing precipitation rates. In response to
drier air working into the region, rain will transition to light
drizzle this evening for all TAF sites.
IFR/LIFR ceilings are likely for the majority of the area but
locations along the highway-20 corridor, including KSUX, will see
ceilings lift to VFR status in the dry slot for a short period of
time during the overnight hours. Wrap around moisture will bring
lower ceilings into MVFR status back to the highway-20 corridor
during the early morning hours. A mix of IFR/LIFR ceilings are
expected to persist for the rest of the region. As this moisture
wraps around, light drizzle will transition to light snow to end the
TAF period. KHON will see a more gradual transition from light
drizzle to a mix of light freezing drizzle/rain/snow morning before
becoming all light snow by tomorrow morning.
Winds will reach their peak intensity this afternoon with gusts
maxing out around 40 mph, mostly over northwest Iowa. Gusts into the
20s and 30s are expected for the rest of the area. Winds remain out
of the east/southeast for the majority of the TAF period while
slowly weakening to elevated gusts by tomorrow afternoon.
