Early morning radar shows little activity over our area, though the
radar beam is likely overshooting any lingering flurries we have
over east-central South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota. Down at
the surface, observations have shown improvements to the
visibilities as blowing snow observations have been trending
downwards thanks to the winds slowly decreasing. Zooming out to look
at the bigger picture, wrap around moisture from the surface low
continues light snowfall for areas in eastern ND, northeastern SD,
and western MN...and while majority of the guidance does keep this
activity out of the area, a light snow shower resulting in a tenth
or two is possible as we head into the morning hours for areas
along/north of highway 14 and onto the Buffalo Ridge. Did extend the
winter weather advisory into the morning hours for a small number of
SW MN counties as it looks most likely that light snow and/or
blowing snow could continue there a couple hours longer than
initially anticipated.
Northwesterly winds will remain breezy throughout the day today as
the pressure gradient remains strong between our exiting low
pressure to the east and the approaching high pressure to our west.
Further aiding the winds is the cold air advection (CAA) out ahead
of the surface high, which will keep our temperatures on the frigid
side with high temperatures largely expected only in the positive
single digits. Wind chills will improve enough by noon to allow for
the expiration of the current wind chill advisory, though will
remain cold in the negative teens and negative twenties.
For the evening hours, winds will continue to slowly decrease but as
arctic air is funneled into the region leading to bitter cold wind
chills returning during the afternoon hours. Have issued a new wind
chill advisory for Wednesday evening into Thursday morning/afternoon
as wind chills will fall below -25 deg F getting close to the -35
deg F mark for a couple areas along/north of highway 14. Overnight
lows in the negative single digits to teens are expected, and could
end up a touch cooler as skies are clearing during that timeframe.

By Thursday morning, the aforementioned surface high continues to
slide down towards the region, with the NAEFS climatology showing
the 1044 mb high being in the 99th percentile for this time of year.
The surface high will be weakening throughout the day, though breezy
conditions will persist with gusts 20-25 mph. High temperatures on
Thursday will be on either side of zero degrees, and with sustained
winds remaining above 10 mph wind chill advisories won't expire
until the afternoon hours.
By the evening hours, convergent flow in the low levels between our
exiting surface high and a developing surface low in CO/WY could
lead to a brief round of snow for areas along the MO River Valley in
south-central SD, though any accumulations should remain light and
under half an inch. Another cold overnight period is expected as the
surface high continues to slide off to our east, with overnight lows
again in the negative single digits to teens.
Southerly return flow sets up on the backside of the surface high as
well as from the developing warm sector from the surface low off to
our west, and will allow us to warm up into the positive upper teens
to upper twenties on Friday. Breezy conditions can again be
expected, but gusts should remain in the upper 20s to lower 30s as a
stout inversion will keep winds from tapping into the stronger flow
aloft. This pattern will continue our warm-up into Saturday as the
surface low moves off into southern Canada, resulting in areas south
of I-90 getting into the lower 40s, and areas north of I-90 in the
lower to upper 30s.
Our warm-up will come to an end by Saturday afternoon/evening as the
cold front comes sweeping through the region. Deterministic and
ensemble solutions currently favor a dry frontal passage, though
strong winds will be likely as the front moves through. Overnight
lows on either side of zero deg F should be expected into Sunday,
with wind chills again dropping down into the negative teens. A
surface high comes sliding in behind the exiting surface low, though
the coldest temperatures look to remain off to our northeast leaving
us with highs on Sunday and Monday in the lower teens to upper 20s
with warmest conditions along the MO River Valley.
Model solutions begin to diverge for the beginning of next week as
they attempt to spawn a cut-off upper level low off the southwest
coast.

Strong winds with gusts to 45 mph will be decreasing throughout the
morning hours, though gusts to 30 mph will be common before
weakening into the overnight hours. MVFR conditions will continue
due to low cigs as a stratus deck moves overhead, with isolated
pockets across SW MN where IFR visbys are reported due to
falling/blowing snow. Scattered flurries will likely continue into
the morning hours, though with winds slowly weaking their impact on
visbys should be waning throughout the morning hours. Winds will
remain from the northwest throughout the TAF period.
