KEY MESSAGES:
1. Temperatures rise on Thursday, but so do winds, which will make
it feel much colder. Winds Thursday gust between 30 to 45 mph.
2. Strong front plows southeast on Friday, increasing snow risks,
and bringing advisory level winds into Friday evening. Some travel
impact is possible.
3. No major systems into next week, but considerable fluctuations in
temperatures are possible, along with occasional breezy conditions.

THIS MORNING: Cirrus continues to spill across the region this
morning, as temperatures fall into the single digits over snow
covered ground. Further west, already beginning to see an increase
in southeast surface winds, with higher elevations gusting into the
20-30 knot range and temperatures rising.
TODAY: Strong low-lvl warm advection will move overhead through the
day today, with 850mb temperatures approaching +8C in south central
South Dakota by mid-day. High temperatures today likely climb above
freezing in most locations, but areas with snow cover may struggle
significantly and again favor cooler guidance for highs in these
areas. The warmest highs will be in south central South Dakota,
where highs in the lower 50s may be possible. The big concern for
today will be with winds. A sharpening SPG combined with favorable
unidirectional flow in the boundary layer to 850 mb, and a slow to
decay low-lvl jet, will lead to near advisory winds by mid-day.
These winds will be the strongest along and east of I-29, and
especially along the higher terrain of the Buffalo Ridge where a few
gusts to 45 to 50 knots may be possible for a few hours mid-day.
Will issue a wind advisory through the heart of the daytime. Have
opted not to expand west of I-29 due to the shorter duration of
the strongest winds in these areas.
TONIGHT: We'll see some early cooling in the evening, but
temperatures may stay rather warm into the overnight hours as low-
lvl winds keep the boundary layer fairly mixy. Lows still fall into
the upper 20s, to lower 30s in higher elevation areas. A frontal
boundary begins to approach south central South Dakota and western
portions of the CWA by daybreak.
FRIDAY: Likely the most impactful weather of the next 5-7 days takes
place on Friday as an upper trough swings through the Northern
Plains during the day on Friday. This trough will push a cold front
through the area on Friday, with a warm start to the day likely
wiped away in the afternoon thanks to strong cold air advection
behind the boundary. Two concerns through the day, the first being
precipitation risks as the latest guidance continues to show
increasing lift associated with the upper trough, and left exit of
the upper jet. This setup overall has a tendency to produce a narrow
band of precipitation which lags begin the front an hour or two, if
the moisture can deepen in time. Most guidance now showing a 1-3
hour window where light snow (perhaps after a brief mix) could pivot
across the Tri-State area in the afternoon and could bring
accumulations up to a half inch. Have boosted Pops in most locations
for the light QPF event.
The unfortunate part, is you'll never be able to measure the snow,
as the second forecast concern also arrives with the snow. Strong
isallobaric pressure rises in excess of 50 ubars/km move through
behind the front, with 0.0.5 km lapse rates over 10 C/km (0-1 km
lapse rates over 7-8 C/km) tapping into low-lvl flow at the top of
the mixed layer around 45-50 knots in the late afternoon. This
results in potential wind gusts at or above advisory levels. Have
pushed forecast winds toward the model max and beyond the 90th
percentile. If QPF increases, then some winter weather travel impact
may be possible as any traveled on snow could turn into ice given
the falling temps.
.LONG TERM...(Friday Evening through Wednesday)

Colder temperatures and some light snow/flurries will be possible
Friday night as colder air funnels in behind the sharp cold front.
Looking aloft, deterministic guidance continue to show a fairly
noticeable shortwave trough and a coupled jet pulling through the
northern plains Friday night into early Saturday. With a decently
saturated dendritic growth zone and strong synoptic forcing, there
will be a fair chance for light snow continuing along a line
extending from Huron to Sioux Falls to Spencer after sunset Friday.
After collaborating with neighbors, 30 pops were introduced to
reflect our collaborative efforts. Nonetheless, fairly limited
moisture in this system will like lead to little to no additional
accumulation.
However, the more certain detail associated with this system seems
to be the stronger winds along the front. A developing low level jet
(LLJ) will likely help create stronger surface winds Friday night
with gusts up to 40-45 kts possible. As a result, a 25/75 blend
of the 90th and NBMExp was used to raise winds speeds/gusts.
Based on the current guidance, a wind headline may be needed for
this time period. However have opted to hold off on issuance due
to uncertainty surrounding snow occurrence. If snow occurs and
begins to accumulate, then a wind headline would like be nested
within a winter headline.
Quiet conditions should return for most of the weekend as cooler air
funnels in ahead of a surface ridge. This will likely lead to a
colder overall temperatures especially in the mornings. By Saturday
morning, most areas are expected to wake up to single digit
temperatures. With breezy conditions still in place, this will
likely lead to wind chills in the negative single digits to teens
across the area. Temperatures will look to slightly rebound by
Sunday with highs expected to hover near to slightly above
freezing in snowless areas as more northwesterly flow sets in.
As the surface ridge slides southeastward out of the region Monday,
an upper level trough centered along the Hudson Bay will begin to
dig down into the northern plains. Deterministic guidance does hint
at this system possibly bringing our next chances for precipitation,
but ensemble guidance continues to show minimal chances for
accumulations as the probability for exceeding a tenth of an inch of
QPF falls within the 50th to 60th percentile. Otherwise, breezy
conditions look to again be possible as a LLJ sets up along the cold
front. Colder air will again funnel into the region behind the front
leaving temperatures in the 20s to 30s for highs and single digits
to teens for lows as a more dry pattern sets up through the end of
the extended period.

VFR conditions are forecast to prevail this TAF cycle. Look for
breezy southerly winds to continue for much of the afternoon, before
diminishing a bit heading into the evening. Nonetheless, will still
see gusts between 15 to 25 mph prevail during the overnight period.
Strong cold front will dive southeastward across the region Friday,
causing gusty winds to once again return, with a change in direction
to the NW in its wake. Currently have gusts approaching 30 to 35 mph
at KHON by the end of the period, with KFSD/KSUX likely to see those
values mid-afternoon. May also see some light snow fall along the
advancing front, which coupled with strong winds may result in
periods of reduced vsbys.
