.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Friday Night)

Quiet conditions continue across the region as upper level ridge
remains overhead, with latest observations showing easterly winds
and temperatures in the 50s to 60s. While gusts are certainly no
where near Red Flag levels, do think its worth noting that falling
dewpoints this afternoon and antecedent dry fuels continue to keep
fire danger elevated across much of our area. So, please continue to
exercise caution with any outdoor activities that may cause a spark.

Heading into the evening, should see upper level ridging begin to
degrade as a trough over the western CONUS pushes eastward toward
the region. Meanwhile, at the sfc, models show a fairly broad area
of WAA lifting northeastward across our area, causing rain chances
to return to the forecast. In regard to timing, latest CAMs remain
in fairly decent agreement that scattered showers and thunderstorms
will blossom across NE Nebraska and NW Iowa near sunset, then lift
into SE South Dakota and SW Minnesota during the overnight period.
Taking a closer look at the dynamics, current soundings do show
MUCAPE values near 1000 J/kg, bulk shear values near 40 kts, and
lapse rates approaching 7 degC/km. Thus, with profiles remaining
largely elevated, believe that isolated large hail will be the
primary hazard with any storm that becomes strong to severe. Winds
during this time will also begin to ramp up as the sfc pressure
gradient tightens, resulting in gusts between 20 to 30 mph for much
of the overnight period. Otherwise, look for lows to remain fairly
mild, as values only fall into the low 40s to low 50s.

By Friday, expect the aforementioned upper level trough and sfc low
pressure to strengthen as they move in tandem toward the region.
While a few showers may still be ongoing near daybreak, should see
somewhat of a lull in activity throughout the day as a sfc warm
front lifts northward across the Northern Great Plains. Winds during
this time will only continue to strengthen, with gust between 35 to
45 mph becoming common. Could even see locations along and west of
the James River gusts as high as 50 mph, though this will largely
depend on how far north the sfc warm front lifts, which in turn will
affect how mixy we get. Thus, have opted to forgo any Wind Headlines
for the time being, given the somewhat lower degree of confidence.

Aside from wind, the other main concern Friday will be the threat
for severe weather. Latest hi-res guidance continues to hint that
convection may initiate 1) behind the advancing warm front or 2)
along a dryline or cold front. At this time, believe the better
chances will occur along the cold front given the lack of forcing in
the warm sector. However, there will still be a few limiting factors
to overcome. For one, we'll see quite the warm up in temperatures,
as highs soar into the mid 60s to mid 80s - with some locations
along the MO River Valley possibly approaching 90 if we get enough
mixing. While these values can certainly have an effect on
instability, the influx of warm air coupled with antecedent dry
conditions will only work to further reduce our moisture across the
region. The second limiting factor to watch will be the timing of
FROPA. While ample forcing should be in place, a passage during the
late evening and overnight period will not be able to take advantage
of diurnal heating. Do think its worth noting, however, that
sounding profiles continue to show ample CAPE (>1000 J/kg), 40+
knots of deep layer shear, and steep lapse rates. Thus, if storms
can materialize, believe they will remain linear in nature and be
capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. Depending on the
orientation of the line compared to the environmental flow, also
can't rule out the threat for isolated tornadoes. So, if you don't
already, we encourage you to have multiple ways to receive warnings
in the event that storms become strong to severe.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Look for breezy southerly winds to continue Saturday, with gusts
between 40 to 50 mph possible through the afternoon. Given that most
of the region will remain near or ahead of the sfc trough, should
also see another day of warm temperatures prevail, as highs soar
into the low to mid 70s. As noted in the previous discussion, could
see another round of showers and thunderstorms develop Saturday
afternoon/evening, however this will largely depend on how far east
the sfc trough advances and whether or not we can achieve sufficient
destabilization. Similar to Friday, believe damaging winds and hail
would be the primary hazards if storms were to materialize.

Expect dry conditions to gradually return Sunday morning as the cold
front pushes eastward. With winds shifting to the northwest, should
see a notable drop in temperatures occur, as values only rise into
the upper 40s to low 50s by Sunday afternoon. Otherwise, expect dry
conditions to prevail for much of the upcoming week as upper level
flow turns zonal. Temperatures during this time will also gradually
warm, with values in the 40s to 50s Monday rising into the 60s to
70s by Wednesday.

Ceilings will gradually lower into the MVFR range tonight across
the area with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
developing - mainly from the Interstate 29 corridor and eastward.
By daybreak on Friday ceilings will be into the IFR range, with
showers and thunderstorms diminishing. With a developing low
level jet, there will be periodic low level wind shear at all TAF
sites for tonight into tomorrow morning. Southeasterly winds will
remain gusty through the TAF period, with strongest winds on
Friday afternoon and evening. There may be additional shower and
thunderstorm development on Friday night, though this will most
likely occur just past the end of this TAF period.
