.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Key Messages:

1) Areas of fog will persist into the morning hours, with a light
mist/drizzle falling out of the stratus deck at times.

2) Strong winter system continues to bring impacts to the area, with
impacts today & tonight focused on areas along and west of the James
River Valley due to moderate/heavy snow at times along with strong
northwesterly winds developing throughout the day.

3) Impacts for Thursday will largely be focused for SW Minnesota and
adjacent areas as 24 hour snowfall totals have increased to be 2-5
inches.

4) As the system exits this weekend very cold temperatures will be
ushered into the area staying throughout the week, with daytime
highs in the single digits to teens expected.

Today: Our strong winter system can be seen early this morning via
water vapor imagery currently sitting on the eastern SD/NE border,
with continued moisture advection in the lower levels resulting in
areas of fog. Surface analysis shows the cyclone has already started
to undergo the occlusion process, with isentropic lift wrapping its
way around the low continuing precipitation chances throughout the
morning hours. As cooler temperatures work their way in from the
west, areas along and west of the James River Valley could start off
the day with freezing rain or sleet before switching over to snow,
which will be continuing throughout the rest of the day. For areas
east of the James, as the low pulls in that cooler air eastward a
brief period of drizzle/freezing drizzle could occur before
switching over to snow. Given the recent rainfall/melting snow, sub-
freezing air temperatures will likely already be creating slick
conditions as any standing liquid freezes, so don't think there will
be any additional impacts due to the patchy freezing drizzle.

The center of the low will continue to slowly meander northeastwards
across the area into the afternoon hours, with areas along and west
of the Missouri River Valley seeing an increase in wind speeds as
the surface pressure gradient (SPG) tightens overhead. Furthermore,
strong 850 mb winds will be mixed down to the surface once winds
become more unidirectional, resulting wind gusts over 40 mph likely
by the evening hours. Low visibilities from falling snow further
amplified by blowing snow are expected. Further east, winds won't be
breezy as that area will be directly under the center of the low
resulting in mostly calm winds. Areas of light snow will begin
moving into SW Minnesota and NW Iowa throughout the afternoon hours.

Tonight: The center of the low will wobble off to the east
throughout the overnight hours, with winds continuing to strengthen.
While areas east of I-29 still won't get too breezy, areas west of I-
29 will see winds greater than 30 mph, while areas along and west of
the Missouri will be closer to 50 mph. Snowfall will continue
throughout the overnight hours as the TROWAL/frontal
band/deformation zone sets up, with vast majority of accumulations
expected west of I-29. By Thursday morning, amounts west of a line
from Huron to Mitchell to Lake Andes will see 24 hour snowfall
totals up to 10 inches, and given the strong winds very low
visibility is expected, so do not travel if you don't need to. The
areas with accumulating snow and blowing snow are well represented
in the current winter weather advisory and winter storm warning, so
no changes to the headlines were needed at this time for today.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 418 AM CST Wed Dec 14 2022

Thursday: Areas of lighter snow will continue Thursday morning as
the low moves off to our east temporarily, with the former
TROWAL/frontal band/deformation zone falling apart rather quickly
into the morning hours. Being brought along eastwards behind the low
are the stronger winds, though the strongest winds will remain
confined to those in south-central South Dakota with gusts up to 45
mph continuing. Elsewhere, wind gusts will generally remain in the
30 mph range, though isolated gusts to 40 mph will be possible. The
winds will continue creating areas of blowing snow, so continue to
be aware of this if you'll be out traveling on Thursday. By the
afternoon hours, vorticity lobes around the upper level low wobble
the low back towards the area, with another TROWAL setting up across
SW Minnesota bringing the chances for moderate snowfall back to the
area. NBM introduced scattered low probabilities for freezing rain
as some of the models lose saturation in the DGZ (dendritic growth
zone), but if that were to happen don't think it would last long
enough for any real accumulations to take place. Higher snowfall
rates shift westward into areas generally north of the I-29 corridor
into the evening hours, and with breezy winds continuing reductions
in visibility are expected. While a headline for these conditions
may be needed with the next forecast package, have decided to forgo
a headline for these areas for the time being.

Friday: As the southern jet stream begins to ramp up and push our
low off to the east, we lose majority of the lift capabilities
across the region. However, sounding profiles across the region
reveal we remain well saturated in the DGZ allowing for chances for
light snow to continue throughout the day. Given the lack of strong
forcing, additional amounts throughout the day will generally be
under an inch, though scattered amounts to two inches could be
possible if any additional light forcing arrives. While the low is
moving off to the east, the surface pressure gradient remains
tightened as a surface high pressure approaches from the northeast,
keeping breezy northwesterly winds continuing with gusts in the 30s
before decreasing into the evening hours.

Saturday-Sunday: While the surface low moves off towards the east
coast, our now orphaned upper level low will be sitting over the
Great Lakes region before moving towards Hudson Bay. This keeps us
under west-northwesterly flow aloft, and with a surface high moving
towards the area cooler temperatures will be brought into the
region. Highs in the teens along and north of I-90 warming up to the
lower 20s south of I-90 are expected on both days. Dry conditions
are expected.

Monday-Tuesday: Ensemble situational awareness tables show
temperatures approaching the lower 10th percentiles of climatology,
which are looking to stay for the remainder of the week. CPC's 6-10
day outlook show high probabilities for below normal temperatures.
NBM came in with daytime highs in the single digits to teens Monday
through Wednesday, with overnight lows as low as negative teens. A
quick look at the ensemble clusters show good agreement in this
occurring, so have not strayed from the NBM for this period.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday Afternoon)

Significant winter storm currently centered over southeast SD will
continue to result in aviation headaches over the TAF period. At
least MVFR ceilings are expected with the focus for IFR and lower
ceilings likely focused west of I-29 through the daytime hours.
IFR and lower ceilings will expand eastward overnight into
Thursday morning.

Similarly, snow will also be focused west of I-29 through the
daytime hours with the sub-VFR visibilities also focused in this
area. This band of snow will begin to fill further eastward into
the Thursday morning resulting in an expansion of restricted
visibilities.

Finally, northwest winds will channel through the west side of the
system into Thursday. Winds will increase markedly from west to
east through the day Thursday with gusts 30-40+ kts. This will
result in significantly reduced visibility, perhaps below 1/2
mile, at times in falling snow near the end and just after the
current TAF period.

minor accumulations of snow and ice.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Light to moderate snow is expected Wednesday into Thursday. Total
snow accumulations from Tuesday night through Thursday could range
from 4 to 8 inches, with higher amounts possible toward the higher
elevations in south central South Dakota. In addition, increasing
northwest winds will result in areas of blowing snow at times,
especially Wednesday night into Thursday.
