South to southeasterly flow will continue to bring cloud cover and
increased low level moisture ahead of the developing low pressure
system in Colorado today. Temps will slowly climb into the low 30s
for most areas. Tonight here still is a signal for freezing
drizzle that is expected to become patchy along and west of the
valley.
UPDATE Issued at 648 AM CST Mon Dec 12 2022
Temperatures have remained relatively steady overnight as cloud
cover thickens from west to east. The upper low, expected to
impact the area over the next several days, is coming onshore this
morning in southern California. This is slightly further south
than the current model/ensemble guidance, so will need to monitor
in the coming updates to gauge any potential shifts in track.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)

Winter impacts are anticipated beginning this evening, then
persisting through Thursday morning. Freezing rain and drizzle are
expected to begin this evening in southeastern North Dakota, then
progress north and east. Freezing rain will gradually mix with sleet
and snow, then transition to all snow through the day Tuesday. Snow
will then fall through the remainder of Tuesday and much of
Wednesday. Travel impacts are expected through the duration of this
system.
The latest ensemble and blended guidance has continued the trend of
warming in the 850 mb layer upon the onset of precipitation this
evening. As such, we expect a delayed transition to sleet and snow,
especially for southeastern North Dakota and the southern Red River
Valley. This additional temporal exposure to freezing rain has
reduced the overall snowfall totals through much of the southern
portion of the forecast area.
ICE ACCUMULATIONS: The latest probabilistic ice amounts are
indicating about a 50 - 80 percent chance for 0.10 inch of ice for
much of Sargent and Ransom Counties, with around a 40 percent chance
for 0.25 inch. To the north, ice probability is in the 30 to 60
percent range for 0.10 inch, mainly west of the Red River Valley.
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: Snowfall totals are somewhat consistent with
previous forecast iterations, with a 60 to 80 percent chance for 6
or more inches of snow for most areas west of the Red River. Higher
amounts are likely where we see convective banding. There is low
confidence in the exact location; however, guidance is converging on
an area along and south of Highway 2 and west of the Red River,
where there is a 60 to 80 percent chance of 8 or more inches of
snow.
TIMING: We should start to see precipitation increase from southwest
to northeast through the evening and overnight period, with much of
the initial P-Type being freezing rain and/or sleet. This is
expected to continue through the night and into Tuesday morning,
when we should see a gradual transition to snow from west to east
starting around mid-morning. By mid-afternoon, most locations should
be either all snow or a rain/snow mix. This is when we expect the
highest snowfall rates to occur, with visibility restrictions
possible late Tuesday through at least early Wednesday. Lighter
snow, and blowing snow are expected for much of Wednesday. Given the
large size and slow movement of this system, light snow is expected
to persist well into Thursday as well.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Sunday)

Long term features the potential for additional/lingering light snow
impacts and patchy blowing/drifting snow for parts of our CWA
Thursday into Friday. Our next shot of arctic air and negative
temperatures/hazardous wind chills is shown to arrive late next
weekend into early next week.
Slow moving upper low that is responsible for our expected winter
storm early in the week is held up by upstream blocking which is
shown to very slowly transition over the northern Atlantic by early
next week. There are variances 3 different ensemble clusters in how
this eventually occurs and strength of this ridge, so while the large
scale pattern shows good agreement the details could still shift
sensible impacts.
During this eastward transition this will directly influence any
potential for lingering light snow over our CWA on the northwest
quadrant of the upper trough due to cyclonic flow that will be
fighting drier (and colder) sagging into our region. There is a
signal for snow showers continue to linger through Thursday with a
large ranges across our CWA from a dusting to as high as 2 inches of
new snowfall possible (based on ECMWF/GEFS ensemble stamps). This is
dependent on how forcing within cyclonic flow evolves as moisture
advection will be limited at that point with the occlusion well
east/southeast along with the main organized deformation. By
Thursday night and Friday the signal is even less consistent, but
within that pattern there is still the potential for "high coverage
low QPF" type snowfall (flurries vs. high coverage 0.5") lingering
longer than consensus would indicate. Gradient will tend to support
lingering winds in the 15-23kt range and as temperatures fall
Thursday and Friday this could support some drifting or localized
blowing snow as temperatures fall to the teens (limited impacts due
to the marginal nature of winds and wet nature of the new snowpack
before temps fall).
By late next weekend the magnitude of that ridge pushing into arctic
regions will influence both the the strength/orientation of the
trough over the eastern US and the secondary trough that may push
south within larger scale flow bringing arctic air southward.
General consensus currently favor decreasing snow chances after
Thursday, with negative temperatures arriving Sun-Mon. How cold we
ultimately get and if there is any type of wind/blowing snow
potential with this arctic push is hard to anticipate and will be
dependent on those details.
