Adjusted cloud cover a bit for current cirrus starting to enter
our western counties, but overall forecast seems on track. Precip
still looks like it will hold off until morning.

Focus of this discussion will be expected conditions tomorrow
morning as the next wave of wintry weather comes across the
northern tier to impact our Easter day.
Strong synoptic forcing will move mostly across southern Manitoba
as the NAM brings the Q-vector convergence maxima over Winnipeg,
but still some decent Q-vector convergence across the north.
The 00Z NAM has weakened from the previous run a band of strong
H800-H850 FG forcing. It has also pushed the strongest mesoscale
forcing further south, although the northern end does have some
minimal overlap with the strong Q-vector convergence across the
north.
NBM QPF values look a tad bit higher than current WPC guidance,
and cannot really justify upgrading on this shift until the new
WPC guidance comes in. My current thoughts are that it may come
in a bit higher and justify a heavy snow warning from Devils Lake
to Langdon, but may only need an advisory with ND counties
adjacent to the Red River. Given the proximity to the strong
Q-vector convergence along the border, confidence in CURRENT QPF
values is fairly high.
Confidence in any areas of prolonged white out conditions is
fairly low, as the strongest winds are more over south central ND
and the low will be moving just south of the Devils Lake basin.
This is not idea to realize the highest winds of the system, so
this would lead toward a winter storm warning for heavy snow as
opposed to blizzard conditions. There is medium-to-high confidence
in areas of 6 inches or higher snowfall accumulations in the
aforementioned area of the Devils Lake basin on into the Langdon
area.
Their is also lower confidence on the timing. Each model run has
trended a bit slower arrival time into Devils Lake, but the 8 AM
to 10 AM ballpark is certainly likely.
In summary, fairly high confidence that a heavy snow event will
occur but, with no new WPC QPF data to process right now, and
with some lower confidence in timing (which will likely be 4 to 6
hours after issuance of the 4 AM package), will hold off on
upgrading to a warning on this shift. The least degree of
confidence is in a blizzard event, although some near blizzard
conditions are possible in the heaviest snow showers.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday night)

The next storm system moving in Sunday into Sunday night will be
the main focus for this portion of the forecast.
The latest surface map shows high pressure over central North
Dakota, with just a bit of a gradient along and east of the Red
River Valley. Therefore winds were fairly light west of the
Valley, but in the 10 to 20 mph range along and east of the
Valley. A few afternoon cumulus were forming in some of the snow
free areas east of the Valley and in the far southern Valley.
However, most of the FA has substantial snow cover. Tonight should
remain very quiet, as high pressure pushes east into Minnesota.
Low pressure will take shape over western South Dakota by Sunday
morning, with an inverted trough extending to the north, up into
eastern Montana. Really don't anticipate any snow arriving in the
Devils Lake area until close to or after 12z Sunday.
On Sunday, the surface low should track into the central Valley by
00z Monday. The 700mb low should track across northern North
Dakota, helping to supply lift. There is weak warm advection
through the day, but the frontogenesis/700mb wave should supply
most of the lift for the snow. Unless the system slows down a
little more, it looks like most of the Sunday snow should precede
the stronger northwest winds behind the system (which are expected
Sunday night). Southeast winds could get a little gusty at times
during the day Sunday west of the Valley, but don't foresee them
becoming strong enough to cause too many issues. Therefore, think
the visibilities on Sunday may be low at times from falling snow,
but not so much from any blowing/drifting contribution. The best
pressure rises/some cold advection arrive Sunday night, which
means the strongest wind period. Again, think the falling snow
will be ending across the Devils Lake region by then. Therefore
there should be less of a falling snow component to cause
additional low visibilities Sunday evening, once these winds
arrive. Even then, the wind does not look terribly strong, but
gusts to 40 mph or so are possible. All said, elected to add a few
more counties into the Winter Storm Watch, mentioning 6 to 8
inches of snow as the main hazard. Have fairly low confidence that
the expected winds Sunday night will be strong enough to cause
travel to shut down. It may be difficult in some areas, so later
shifts can take another look at that.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Light snow from the previous system will push out early Monday
morning. As the low pressure system pushes out, winds will increase
in the Valley and westward into the Devils Lake Basin. Gusts up to
35 MPH are possible in the southern Red River Valley. Skies will
clear and WAA will try to warm us to start the week under transient
high pressure, before more precipitation chances come our way.
Mid-week is the next chance for precipitation. Moisture continues to
be limited for the North Dakota side, and higher for Minnesota
areas. As for type, it looks like it could be a mix of rain and
snow, oscillating between rain and snow as temperatures fluctuate.
NBM Probabilities have a 50% chance for greater than 1 inch of snow
up near Lake of The Woods and Flag Island, but everywhere else is a
lower probability, in the 10-30% range. Temperatures during this
time are in the 40s for highs, and near freezing for lows.
Ending the period, Friday has a signal in the guidance for windy
conditions, but we will have to see as we move forward in time.
Another system is possible over the weekend, but confidence is low
with timing, track, and precip type. More WAA is progged for the end
of the week as well, trying to get us to more average spring time
temperatures.
