The back edge of accumulating snow stalled this evening over
eastern ND, with flurries further west. Within this area of light
snow rates of 0.1"/hr snowfall are likely still occuring (just
checked out own snow board at 9pm and we had another 0.3" at at
the office in Grand Forks) and up to 1" could be ruled out through
the night if this lingers longer. Further south and east there
are likely pockets of 0.25"/hr rates still occuring where totals
could eventually exceed 3" for the event (including what has
already fallen and would be more localized on the upper end of
those totals). This lines up with the areas in the advisory. 00Z
HREF has matched the areal extent of measurable snow and shows
this finally pushing east between midnight and 3am (lingering in
our east- northeast with wrap around energy through 12Z). I made
additional adjustments to better reflect coverage/delay ending of
measurable snow. Main impacts are still reflected by current
products, so no changes planned to hazards. I held off for now,
but could see eventually lingering flurries longer after the
initial period of forcing/moisture exits later tonight.

Main area of snowfall continues to transition east with less
obvious organized bands on radar due to the activity moving away
from the radar/beam overshooting. Still obs in MN around 1 mile
would indication accumulating snow ongoing with support from
webcams/road reports. Window for accumulating snow should end west
to east through the evening/overnight while a few pockets of
lingering flurries may continue behind this main area of snow due
to very cold air/low stratus. Overall, forecast is on track and
the main adjustments made were to increase coverage into the
evening hours to better reflect current trends.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night)

Falling snow and hazardous wind chills will continue to be the
main impacts for the period.
Positively tilted trough continues to dig into the Rockies/western
Plains, with a fair amount of synoptic lift and some weak mid
level frontogenesis along our southern counties. The upper low
will swing into ND tonight, with fairly broad lift and light snow
continuing. Still thinking our southeastern counties will see the
most accumulation, with up to 3 to 4 inches possible. Will
continue to keep winter weather advisory for falling snow through
12Z.
The center of the Arctic high pressure will be moving down the
High Plains, with the pressure gradient ramping up overnight and
into Thursday. Wind chills are already advisory criteria across
most of our CWA, and that will continue overnight as actual temps
fall into the -10 to -15 range and we see winds around 10 to 15
bringing hazardous wind chills. A couple of spots could approach
the -40 mark, but will be fleeting and think there will be better
chances for warning criteria later on. The pressure gradient will
only continue to bring northwesterly winds into Thursday and
Thursday night. Extended wind chill advisory until 00Z Friday for
all counties. The wind chill impacts will continue into Thursday
night and beyond, but will leave to later shifts to parse out
which areas need warning vs advisory.
With increasing winds, blowing snow will become more of a threat
as we head into tomorrow afternoon. There should be fairly fresh
snow to blow around, although falling snow will have mostly ended.
At current projected wind speeds around 20 to 25 kts Thursday
afternoon, blowing snow model has some probability around 40
percent of less than a half mile visibility in blowing snow, but
not a slam dunk for blowing snow everywhere. There is some
question if wind speeds will get a bit higher than expected, but
for now it seems like the pressure gradient will be the main
driver of the winds, with not much cold air advection to aid in
additional mixing. While the probability of blizzard conditions is
not zero, it does seem at this point that blowing snow impacts
will be more hit and miss and in rural areas. With ongoing
advisory due to falling snow, think there could be confusion so
will leave any additional headlines for blowing snow until later.
With visibility issues Thursday afternoon and wind chills in the
advisory or warning range, any holiday travelers that get stranded
could be in trouble. Will put out a DSS packet and heads up email
to highlight the threat.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

A departing low pressure system will bring breezy north winds to the
area. Models and forecast soundings indicate around 30 kts to mix
down toward the surface. Low level lapse rates not conducive for
deep layer mixing at this time. However, enough of a surface
pressure gradient exists where winds will be able to blow snow
around reducing visibilities, mainly in open areas. The question
remains to what extent there will be blowing snow across the
forecast area. Combining the winds with continued bitter cold
temperatures will lower wind chill values again to near -40F to
start the period.
For Saturday, the remnants of the system will depart and slowly
track northeastward toward the James Bay area with a decreasing
pressure gradient and lighter winds. Meanwhile, the upper pattern
begins to shift. Northwest flow aloft will result in a clipper
system traversing the area for late Sunday into Monday. A gradual
shift of the upper ridge farther east will see increased thickness
values resulting in a gradual warm up and a return to more seasonal
temperature values.
After Wednesday, the pattern splits and the northern stream will
have more of an impact over the region. A short wave aloft
propagating through the flow along the international border will
provide another chance for some light precipitation. Otherwise,
temperatures will remain near, to slightly above, seasonal norms to
end the period.

Areas of light snow and stratus continue to cause highly variable
flight conditions across eastern ND and northwest MN. Where
accumulating light snow is occuring there are visibility
reductions to IFR, while flurries (non measurable snow) are
briefly reducing visibility to MVFR. Eventually this snow ends
early in the TAF period but increasing winds will lead to patchy
blowing snow Thursday primarily in eastern ND and MVFR (possible
IFR) visibility reductions depending on sustained winds. Stratus
will tend to prevail in the MVFR (brief IFR) range through the TAF
period, though there are brief "holes" within these stratus
layers that allow for brief improvements to VFR (hard to
anticipate and zero in on period they would prevail).
