crystals persisting in the arctic airmass. Otherwise most areas
seeing 2 to 3 mile vsby per METARs and webcam observations with
less winds outside the valley floor. Temps a bit chilly with teens
to single digits below and wind chills 30 to 40 below this hour.

Have allowed the blizzard warning to transition to winter weather
advisory as visibilities are slowly improving. Still seeing
reduced visibilities as winds gust around 35mph along the valley
floor. Most visibilities are at a half mile or better with some
sporadic quarter mile reports still in the valley in the past
hour. Winds decrease into the afternoon as pressure gradient
relaxes and temp advection remains neutral.

Sfc low crossing into northern lower Michigan with the tightest
surface pressure gradient now over southern RRV and NE South
Dakota and west central MN. Past 2 hours Fargo has been gusting to
40-48 mph with periods of 1/2sm to 1/4sm. Wahpeton AWOS has been
1/4sm for the past few hours as well as Gwinner ND AWOS. See no
reason to alter messaging or headlines at this time. The main
actual falling snow is just about done with in the RRV with what

Will leave all current headlines as they are with blizzard
warnings expiring at 15z (9 am CST) this morning. Sfc low is over
central Wisconsin, but pressure gradient is tightest over the
central RRV at 08z. We did have an increase in wind speeds from
Cavalier to Grafton to Grand Forks just after midnight, with peak
wind at GFK ASOS of 44 kts at 0846z. Sounding profiles suggest
35-38 kt gusts to mix down so a few times they have been higher
than what soundings suggest. Cold advection has been steady but
not too strong but there has been a pressure rise moving into NE
ND. Grafton and Grand Forks stations have reported 1/4SM
periodically for about 2 hours and I forsee stronger winds into
Fargo 10z-11z period. This would bring the lowest visibilities
into Fargo area. Gwinner in SE ND has been a bit stronger winds
with vsby 1/4SM for much of the night, and Wahpeton has joined
them.
Overall blizzard impacts are peaking currently. The 12z-15z period
will see the wind max exiting and gradually improving conditions.
Feel ok letting BZW go at 15z all areas...though some will see
improvement prior. Lingering wind gusts thru mid aftn to remain in
the 35 mph range and with fresh powder will transition blizzard
warning to winter weather advisory for E ND into MN 15z-21z.
Now as the blowing snow impacts end, attention turn to wind
chills. The winter weather headlines cover any wind chill issues,
but once winter wx advisory ends at 21z will transition all areas
to wind chill advisory thru 06z Thu. I picked that time as by then
western areas (DVL) go into wind chill warning range and when
appropriate additional wind chill advisories or warnings will be
issued into daytime Thursday/early Friday.
Snowfall seems to be in the 2-3 inch range thru 06z with some
after 06z, so thinking NE ND into N MN will be 2-4 inch new
snowfall. Lesser snow far south.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Tuesday)

The long term period starts out with high pressure and another
arctic airmass settled over the northern tier, dropping the mercury
into the 20s below zero and wind chills in the 30s and 40s below
zero.
Friday and Saturday
Strong warm air advection Friday will cause a sharp rise in the
mercury, bringing Friday highs above zero, ranging from the low
single digits in the far east to the mid teens in the southwest.
The warm air surge will be followed by a clipper system that will
bring a chance for snow Friday night into Saturday, with the most
impacts across northwest MN and specifically along the international
border (greater impacts in southeastern Manitoba).
During the mid-week, a northeast Pacific low will crash into British
Columbia and eventually evolve into a clipper system that moves
across eastern MT and SD on Friday. The best synoptic forcing
appears to be across southeastern Manitoba, as max Q-vector
convergence is progged to be north of the border in northwest
Minnesota. Strong warm air advection will also cause ample forcing.
Probabilistically, there is about a 40% to 50% chance of exceeding
0.10 inches of QPF along the international border with Kittson and
Roseau counties during the 24-hour period from 00Z Saturday to 00Z
Sunday, with the max total QPF generated by the NBM that same period
being less than 0.07 inches.
Sunday through Wednesday
High pressure returns to western ND on Sunday, with lows in the
double digits below zero again Sunday night. Monday could see a
return to single digits above zero. Return flow sets up by Monday
night, bringing a rapid warm up to the teens and twenties above zero
by Tuesday afternoon. This warmup continues into the mid-week. Low
confidence in the Tuesday highs in the 20s considering the recent
increase of snowpack across the region, meaning a higher albedo that
will impact daytime highs.
