Winds continue to increase with some reduced visibilities
of less than a half mile sporadically from Langdon to Hallock.
The potential for gusts up to 45 mph will continue through the mid
afternoon across the northern valley. Sporadic with near or short
duration blizzard conditions are possible until temps warm into
the teens.
UPDATE Issued at 956 AM CST Sat Feb 19 2022
Will continue to see south winds increase into the afternoon as
pressure gradient increases across the region. BUFkit soundings
show a period of sustained SFC winds in the 25 to 30kt range in
the northern valley. Reduced visibilities are expected with
blowing snow in open country. Near blizzard conditions are
expected with visibilities generally a half mile with occasional
conditions a quarter mile or less. Conditions will improve as
temperatures rise late this morning into the afternoon from west
to east. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6pm to
account for the blowing snow and reduced visibility impacts.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday)

Impacts are possible today as we see southerly winds increase by mid
morning across the area. Blowing snow is expected across portions of
the region to include the central Red River Valley northward to the
International Border, as well as points westward to the Devils Lake
Basin. There is very good agreement between blended guidance,
ensemble data, deterministic high-res models, and soundings
regarding momentum transfer of the 925 mb winds. Southerly to south-
southwesterly winds at the 925 mb level will be in the 45 to 55 knot
range starting by mid-morning and persisting until late afternoon.
As such, blowing snow will be possible, with reduced visibility down
to 1/2 mile or less at times. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY will be in
effect for portions of the region through this evening.
Warmer air will be advecting into the region through the day along
the aforementioned southerly winds. Temperatures will be on a
gradual rise, with our high temperatures (upper teens to low 30s)
expected to occur late this evening.
From here, we turn our attention to another cold front for Sunday,
along with another chance for snow and blowing snow along strong
north winds. Light snow is expected from Highway 200 northward, with
mainly light accumulations of 1 to 2 inches. South of Highway 200,
look for a dusting in most areas. Winds increase just before sunrise
as winds shift to the north. Blowing snow and sharply reduced
visibility is once more the primary expected impact through much of
the day Sunday. The Red River Valley will be especially vulnerable
due to the northerly direction of the winds and the Valley effect,
which leads to an increased wind risk when winds are out of the
north. As such, a WINTER STORM WATCH is in effect for blowing snow
and potential blizzard conditions from the central Red River Valley
northward.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Friday)

In general, the H5 trof broadens across northern NOAM as the
longwave pattern retrogrades into a more western NOAM position from
Sunday night through Wednesday...and driving the main storm track a
bit south of the FA. Then the H5 trof steadily shifts across the
central plains Thursday into Saturday... with cold air firmly
entrenched across the NP region into Thursday, and slowly eroding
with a moderate southerly return flow late Thursday through
Saturday.
Sunday night into Monday... strong northerly blayer flow slowly
subsides from Sunday night into Monday morning with models favoring
a secondary and quasi-stationary frontal boundary laying along the
southern edge of the FA through much of Monday. Light to moderate
snowfall appears likely (60-80 percent chance) across far southeast
ND and portions of west central MN. Temperatures Sunday night into
Monday should drop well below zero, with moderate northerly winds
producing winds chills from minus 25 to minus 40 degrees or
colder into midday Monday.
Moderate northerly flow persists Monday night into Tuesday, with
generally dry conditions expected, but bitter overnight low
temperatures and wind chills again in the minus 25 to minus 40
degree range.
Dry and Cold continues through Thursday, with a northerly blayer fl
ow turn from the west on late Wednesday, and from the south by
Thursday.
Ensemble models favor a steady warming from Friday into
Saturday, with generally dry conditions through that period.

BLSN and winds the main concerns in the period with another system
moving across the area today and also see some LLWS. S to SW
winds this afternoon gusting to 40kts at DVL, GFK and TVF. A lull
in the winds tonight before north winds kick in tomorrow. Gusts
again will create blowing snow reduced visibilities especially at
GFK and FAR tomorrow morning with speeds to 40kts.
