This morning, the forecast more or less remains on track for
areas of moderate to heavy snow to move across the region from
east to west. Currently seeing visibilities less than one mile
under the bands of heaviest snow across west central and
northwestern Minnesota. Beginning to see some reduced visibilities
as well west of the Devils Lake basin, likely due to blowing
snow. Will continue to monitor conditions out across the Devils
Lake basin as winds pick up and snowfall rates increase.

UPDATE Issued at 615 AM CST Thu Dec 15 2022

Broad area of initial light to moderate snow has overspread much
of northwest MN and is moving into the Red River Valley from the
east. Visibilities so far within this area are occasionally below
1 mile but upstream there have been reports east of our CWA of
1/2 to 1/4 mile where heavier snow has been occurring. All of
this is match up well with the timing of the advisory to warning
transition and I just pushed out the next WSW update that expired
the advisory for our central CWA with warnings now in effect from
the Red River Valley east. Advisory remains in effect in the
Devils Lake Basin, with the warning going in effect at 9am. Storm
is on track, so no major changes necessary.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)
Issued at 413 AM CST Thu Dec 15 2022

Winter storm impacts are still on track for today into tonight, with
lingering winter weather impacts possible into the day Friday as
well.

Timing of impacts/expectations are still on track including timing of
current hazards (advisories early transitioning to warnings this
morning).

Today-Tonight: As a strong jet streak is rounding the northeast side
of the large upper low and its associated mid level shortwave
(highlighted by very strong mid level positive vorticity) is helping
organize a broad area of moderate snow upstream of our CWA. Several
areas of north-south orientated frontogenesis in the 850-700MB layer
and and at mid level lapse rates in the 6-7C/km range above this
layer, resulting in more intense heavy snow rates. The initial area
of snow with this round is already spreading into our eastern CWA
(match up with the start time of the Winter Storm Warning there).
Less organized pockets of snow (mixed with drizzle/freezing drizzle)
are still out ahead of this with advisories continuing (6am central
CWA, 9am western CWA). By midday today a coupled jet structure aloft
results in the strengthening of the mid level trough possibly
resulting in more organized  deformation bands within our CWA.

Snow ratios should also fall in the 10-15:1 range (maybe a little
higher) as profiles will be cooler than previous events and
forcing/instability within the dendritic zone is shown by soundings.
Progression/residence time of the organized areas of heavy snow will
shift where greatest snow totals occur, however probs for 6" or
higher are still in line with previous forecast with warning totals
most likely along and south of the Highway 2 corridor where ensemble
probs exceed 70%. HREF still shows potential for 1"/hr rates even in
our north though its highest probs (70-90%) are still in the similar
corridor (Hwy 2 and south). The potential is still there for warning
impacts even in our north.

Regarding blowing snow impacts: Increasing surface gradient should
still support winds to strengthen in the 25-28kt range during the
daytime period mainly in ND, and when snow is falling these winds
would result in near blizzard conditions. Higher gusts occuring at
the same time could result in a situation where if the heavy snow
duration is long enough with gusts 35-45 mph blizzard conditions
could occur (30% chance blizzard conditions along our far western
counties).

Tonight-Friday: Most of our warnings expire east to west this
evening (9pm east) into Friday morning (west) as the heavier snow
potential ends and this does highlight the period of most likely
warning impacts. However lingering light snow may still occur
however through Friday and with sustained winds increasing back
into 25-26kt range in our west and temperatures decreasing with
CAA. There may be lingering blowing snow impacts for parts of our
area, but without stronger sustained winds (30kt+) impacts would
fall in the advisory category and for now there isn't a signal
for sustained winds that strong. Will hold off on adjusting end of
current hazards, but I could see a warning to advisory type
transition occuring at some point tonight/Friday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Wednesday)

Snow showers will remain possible Saturday as the low pressure that
brought us heavy snowfall this week continues to move east of the
region. Patchy blowing snow west of the valley is possible as wind
speeds sit around 15-20kts gusting toward 25kts. This could create
isolated reduced visibilities at times down to 1 mile in open
country. NW flow then sets into the region through the end of the
weekend and into next week, with temperatures likely to be below
average. During this time short waves are able to translate down
from NW Canada, but guidance struggles to introduce any such
occurrence through the early portions of the long term.

Temperatures will be the main impact, with highs only reaching the
single digits Sunday and the negative single digits through the new
work week. Morning lows will drop down to the negative teens to
potential negative 20s. Dangerous wind chills are expected during
this time, with values looking to drop down to the negative 20s to
negative 30s. There is a chance we could see the negative 40s in
eastern ND at times closer to the mid work week. Guidance continues
to show this could be a longer duration cold, with multiple days of
temperatures remaining subzero for both highs and lows. The first
signal for a shortwave is hinted near the end of the long term, but
paints probabilities of snow across a majority of the northern
plains. Thus there is a chance for some shortwave activity, but
confidence is low on the exact timing, strength, and where exactly
precipitation may fall.

IFR/LIFR conditions will dominate the afternoon into the evening
as moderate to heavy snowfall continues. Winds gusting to 30kts
and more at FAR, GFK and DVL combined with the snowfall will
create vsby at or less than a half mile. Gradual improvement is
expected this evening with snowfall rates decreasing and wind
gusts lessening.
