...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...

.SHORT TERM /Tonight through Friday Night/...

Stationary boundary currently situated across northern GA.
Low pressure is currently across east central AL. This low center
will move NE along the old boundary this evening and then offshore
the DELMARVA overnight. Regional radar shows widespread precip has
moved into north Georgia. This area of rain will continue to
overspread the CWA through the evening hours. The front will slowly
push south as the low pressure center tracks off to the east tonight.

To address the WSW: this will definitely be a marginal event for a
wintry mix of precipitation for both segments of the WSW. Wintry
precip now looks to be most confined to elevations above 2000 feet
for the remainder of the afternoon/evening. Will refine the WSW to
remove the Valley zones in the NW (Whitfield/Catoosa) and mention
any wintry precip to elevations above 2000 feet.

NW segment: Still some isolated spots that are hovering near
freezing with below freezing dewpoints this afternoon. The Covenant
College webcam/weather ob (~2100 ft) is showing fog/in cloudy
with temps just under freezing. Do think that some patchy freezing
drizzle/fog is possible at elevations at or above 2000 feet after
the main precip shield passes to the east. So have added some
patchy freezing drizzle to the grids. Little, if any, ice
accumulation is anticipated. A brief changeover from rain to a
sleet/snow mix is still possible, but any accums should definitely
stay below an inch...more like a dusting on grassy/elevated
areas. This segment will likely end up being cancelled early,
especially if the precip/clouds move out quicker than anticipated.

NE segment: The main precip shield has started to encroach upon NE
GA. There are isolated spots where the temps are in the 30s with
some very low dewpoints, but all of those spots are well above 2000
feet. Locales above 2000 feet will be the most likely areas for any
changeover to sleet/snow this afternoon/evening. In addition, some
patchy freezing drizzle is possible after the main precip shield
pulls off to the east. Any snow accum should definitely stay below
an inch...more like a dusting on grassy/elevated areas. Little, if
any, icing accum from the freezing drizzle is anticipated. This
segment will likely end up being cancelled early, especially if the
precip/clouds move out quicker than anticipated.

Temps around 10 to 15 degrees below normal are anticipated across
north Georgia tonight and tomorrow. Elsewhere, roughly around 5
degrees below normal. Min ApparentT values will also be mainly
confined to the elevations of at or above 2000 feet. Will continue
the SPS for the low Wind Chills at this time.

The remainder of the forecast will be dry, if cold.

.LONG TERM /Saturday through Thursday/...

Saturday begins with upper-level ridge axis and the surface high
pressure behind the cold front from the short term period moving off
to the east over the Atlantic. This will make Saturday a pleasant
day with winds shifting out of the east and seasonal highs in the
upper 40s and low 50s.

With surface winds shifting out of the east and WSWerly flow in the
mid- and upper-levels of the atmosphere, we'll begin again the
'wash, rinse, and repeat' cycle weather system pattern associated
with mid-latitude weather systems. PWATS between 0.25-0.50 inches
on Saturday night will quickly be replaced with 1.25-1.50 inch
values by Sunday afternoon setting the stage for the next round of
decent precipitation. Zooming further out, a longwave pattern
sets up across the Great Lakes and Midwest region, with a digging
shortwave across the Ozarks Plateau by Sunday night accompanied by
an elongated cold front from the Ark-La-Tex region into New
England. The front is going to be propelled forward more by a
stout high pressure in the mid to southern Plains, good news in
terms of reducing threats for any winter and severe weather.
However, with focused lift over the baroclinic zone from the
shortwave could once again spawn a meso-low center through the
Southeastern states as we've seen in the last several systems.
Otherwise, looking at a slight chance for thunderstorms, mainly in
west and central Georgia on Sunday, with a decent inversion
hopefully diverting any severe threat with the system. Colder air
will again rush in behind the front but freezing temps look to
arrive behind the rains. Current rainfall forecasts range from 0.5
inches in central Georgia to 1.5 inches in far North Georgia,
with some isolated higher amounts possible.

Beyond, high pressure settles in (tell me if you've heard this one
before). With temperatures starting out about 5 degrees below normal
on Tuesday with highs in the mid 40s, and rising by about 5 degrees
each day thereafter.

Next 'rinse' cycle progged for the following weekend.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight...

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of far north
Georgia through this evening, where widespread rain could turn to
a wintry mix of snow and sleet, with a chance for patchy freezing
drizzle. Any wintry mix and freezing drizzle should be confined
to elevations at or above 2000 feet. Snow accumulations should
remain less than an inch, mainly on grassy or elevated surfaces.
Little, if any, icing is anticipated.

Tonight, wind chill values will drop into the teens across north
Georgia and single digits in the mountains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday...

A cold front with widespread rain showers is expected Sunday and
Sunday night with a slight chance for thunderstorms.

...VERY COLD AND WINDY CONDITIONS EXPECTED IN NORTH GEORGIA
TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING...

A strong cold front will bring cold and windy conditions to much
of north Georgia tonight into Friday morning. Northwest winds of
10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph this evening will
gradually decrease overnight. However, with the very cold, sub-
freezing temperatures, wind chill values will fall into the teens
across north Georgia with readings in the single digits in the
mountains.

Limit outdoor activities and be sure to dress appropriately if
you have to be outdoors for extended periods of time.
