Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent
freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should
be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have
in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-
ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

The post front environment will continue to be dry and very cold
with today's highs running nearly 20 degrees below average.
Widespread low to mid 50s are today's highs with some of the higher
elevations in N Georgia struggling to get out of the 40s. Winds will
be NW at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

A Freeze Warning is in effect for Northern and parts of Western
Georgia until 8 AM this morning as tonight's overnight lows fall into
the low 30s and upper 20s. The Freeze Watch for Tuesday night and
into Wednesday morning has been upgraded to a Freeze Warning and
includes a majority of NW Georgia including the metro area.
Temperatures in the low 30s and upper 20s are expected.

In addition to the cold temps today, a Red Flag Warning is in effect
for much of central Georgia. For more information please reference

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday night through Monday)

Mid/Upper levels to remain active through the period. High pressure
at the surface will be in place for much of the extended period,
with a wedge building in during the weekend and lasting into early
next week.

At the beginning of the period, NW flow aloft in place on the back
side of a longwave through that has pushed off the eastern seaboard.
Another piece of strong shortwave energy looks to drop south in the
flow, reinforcing the broad through across the eastern CONUS on
Thursday with NW flow aloft lasting through Friday. A more zonal
pattern is expected for the weekend, with the flow turning more SW
by early next week.

At the surface, high pressure should dominate through much of the
period. A wedge looks to build in for the weekend and continue
through early/mid next week. For now, conditions should remain dry.
The main story remains the below normal temps.

MinT values will remain below normal through Saturday morning, but
begin to quickly moderate for the remainder of the weekend into
early next week. Wednesday Night/Thursday Morning MinT's will be the
coldest within the long term period, with values around 10 to 20
degrees below normal.

MaxT values will also quickly moderate to near or just above normal
during the weekend into early next week. Thursday is expected to be
the coldest day, with MaxT values roughly 10 to 15 degrees below
normal.

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for portions of central and
eastern Georgia Tuesday afternoon and evening due to low
humidities, gusty winds, and dry fuels. See /ATLRFWFFC/ for
further details.

A Freeze Watch has been issued for northern and western portions
of Georgia for Wednesday morning. Temperatures of 32 degrees or
below are expected within the watch area. See /ATLNPWFFC/ for
further details.
