For the I35 corridor, model guidance backed off the probabilities of LIFR ceilings and visibility restrictions overnight but there could still be some IFR and perhaps LIFR conditions around and just after sunset with MVFR likely continuing for most of the day before IFR returns tomorrow evening. IFR restrictions will likely hold on for most of the day for DRT. The front is expected to arrive in the late afternoon hours with rain chances increasing. Any chance for wintry precipitation will occur shortly after the end of the valid TAF period for AUS. && PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 341 PM CST Tue Feb 1 2022/ .WINTER WEATHER EXPECTED TO IMPACT SOUTH-CENTRAL TEXAS AS A STRONG COLD FRONT MOVES IN LATE WEDNESDAY... SHORT TERM (Tonight through Wednesday Night)... The next 36 hours will be active for South-Central Texas from a weather standpoint, as conditions rapidly change behind a strong arctic cold front late Wednesday. We'll likely go from highs in the 70s today, to highs not getting above freezing for parts of the area by Thursday and Friday. While we are expecting an impactful winter weather event, this event will pale in comparison to what we experienced last February, both in time and scale. Latest visible satellite imagery shows morning low clouds and stratus continuing to break up as diurnal heating takes full control. Temperatures have already warmed well into the 60s for most, with some spots already in the lower 70s at the 1pm hour. Pretty much everyone will see temperatures in the 70s today, with perhaps the lone exception being east of the highway 77 corridor, where highs might just barely miss the 70 degree mark. Winds will actually be fairly light tonight, setting the stage for some fairly decent radiational cooling, and perhaps some hybrid fog (both advection and radiation). Moisture will begin pooling over the Coastal Plains late this evening, and will those light winds and a lack of significant upper level cloud cover, patchy dense fog is expected to form towards sunrise Wednesday. Visibilities could briefly fall to less than 1/4 mile at times. This fog layer may work its way fairly far west as moisture works it's way northward ahead of our approaching cold front. While we do not anticipate widespread dense fog, be sure to slow down and use your low beams if you encounter reduced visibility. Wednesday will be our big transition day as a powerful upper level trough digs southward over the Four Corners by Wednesday afternoon. A strong Arctic cold front will approach from the north, entering Hill Country by the afternoon hours. Working in concert with the moisture already pooled over the region, this will encourage the development of rain, and perhaps a few claps of thunder, across the area tomorrow afternoon and evening. Surface temperatures will plummet behind the cold front, as gusty north winds advect the coldest air of the season into south-central Texas. Temperatures should fall below freezing by the pre-dawn hours Thursday morning across the Hill Country. Although the surface cold front will be to our south by the time surface temperatures fall below freezing, residual moisture, elevated isentropic lift over the cold front, and dynamic forcing provided by the right entrance region of an 80-100 kt 300 mb jet streak in our vicinity should continue to support precipitation following the arrival of sub-freezing temperatures. Given the shallow nature of the encroaching sub- freezing cold dome (model cross sections indicate a depth of 1000-900 mb), and a warm nose present in the 900-700 mb layer, said precipitation will likely reach the ground in liquid form, prior to freezing upon contacting the rapidly chilling surface. Given that regions across Hill Country and the southern Edwards Plateau will be the first to fall below freezing, we have elected to introduce freezing rain into the weather grids between 06 and 12Z Thursday in these areas. LONG TERM (Thursday through Tuesday)... Highlights: 1) By daybreak Thursday morning freezing conditions are expected across the Hill Country. Temperatures will continue to fall across South Central Texas through the day on Thursday, with locations near and north of a Del Rio to northern San Antonio, to La Grange line reaching the freezing mark. Hard freezes in the low teens to low 20s are forecast Thursday night and Friday night across all of South Central Texas. There is a potential some locations in the Hill Country could see a long duration freeze of up to 60 hours. 2) Brisk northerly winds will produce bitterly cold wind chill values Thursday through Saturday mornings, ranging from near zero to the teens. A risk for hypothermia exists for those spending extended time outdoors and not dressed in layers and gloves. 3) Precipitation chances begin Wednesday ahead of the front and continue behind it Wednesday night into the day on Thursday. Confidence continues to increase that a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet will occur by Thursday morning and produce icing amounts that could cause travel impacts through the Hill Country and into the Austin metro area. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for this region. There is a lower confidence in freezing rain and sleet occurring farther south to a Del Rio to northern San Antonio to La Grange line. It should be noted that this forecast is still evolving. 4) Confidence is slightly improved on a change-over to snow across the Edwards Plateau and Northern Hill Country. However, it is expected that precipitation rates will have decreased by this time, leading to little or no snow accumulations. Details: The long term discussion starts off with a slight overlap of the short-term with one of the more challenging aspects of the forecast being to pin down the timing of the freezing line as it advances south and sort of fragments as the daytime temperatures and wet bulb temps make minor modifications to the frontal inversion as precipitation continues in the light to moderate category. Thus determining on where that freezing line is could play a large role over which area receives the most ice accretion. With WPC influenced QPF forecasts looking reasonable, this package reinforces the thinking of the overnight shift assessments and identifying the northern Hill Country and areas on the north side of Austin metro and the areas that stand the highest chance of seeing ice accumulation on solid surfaces. The 12Z to 18Z Thursday time window has the highest potential for the most impactful accumulations, and, should pockets of moderate sleet develop over the eastern half of the forecast area, the freezing line could be drawn southward. For now with the usually well-performing NAM on shallow air-masses being the least cold behind the front, we decided not to shift much if at all on the impacts that are outlined in the early morning forecast package. However, we should note the trends that offset the normally trustworthy NAM, and that is the MOS guidance trends going colder over the past 3 runs from both the GFS and ECM. Thus confidence slightly increases for the Winter Storm Watch area, but remains quite low outside of this area. What is more predictable is the a broader area of counties along Highway 90 should expect to see a increased chance of sleet during the daytime Thursday, as previous model trends for the past couple days have boosted PoPs slightly for the Thursday afternoon period. While isolated model solutions may extend PoPs beyond 00Z Friday, the overall trend is more optimistic in that the weak disturbances depicted in the zonal pattern aloft through the weekend are looking to be too weak and in too dry of an air regime. Thus we will continue to tamp down any low chances for PoPs that would otherwise signal additional frozen or freezing precipitation threats. However, this also reinforces that the air in the wake of this lead storm system is likely to give us two consecutive hard freeze nights area-wide. There are still some pockets in the Hill Country that could encounter 60 straight hours of subfreezing temperatures, which would resemble a weather pattern seen roughly every 2 to 5 years for this part of Texas. That doesn't mean a few locations couldn't see icing in excess of half an inch, but at this time we expect that to be a reasonable worst-case scenario. Given the somewhat benign pattern suggested by model consensus, we'll not spend much energy on the latter part of the medium range.
